If Curry signs a $60-million deal and is forced to retire in the fall because of a recurrence of the heart problem, the Bulls could be on the hook for the entire amount. Of course, the Bulls could try to write provisions into the contract to protect themselves, but as a restricted free agent, Curry could conceivably get an offer sheet from another team that is fully guaranteed.
If that idea seems far-fetched, remember that New York Knicks general manager Isiah Thomas is out there with a pen, blank contract and a history of unwisely spending money.

Curry won't sign a MLE offer sheet, and if for some reason he does, the Bulls will match it. If an under the cap team offered a max or near max deal, then he might get out.

Depending on the severity of his heart condition, they might not match a contract guaranteeing $30 mil. If his condition looks bad, I wouldn't want to use the MLE on him, though.

we have to stop regarding it as even as much as a rumor every time some other team's beat writer cites the knicks as a possible destination to send an overpaid player. we've taken back some bad contracts. that doesn't mean those sports writers are going on anything better than our track record to say their bloated contracts will end up here, no rumors, buzz, ever-reliable unnamed sources, none of that, just pure speculation.
Oasis, the option to cut a player under the new CBA is a one-time option this summer. i don't see us signing curry bigtime and then waiving him the very same offseason. like at least a 90% chance we use it on houston.

He supposedly has gotten a clean bill of health, he doesn't have the same condition, same severity as Reggie Lewis.. with regard to his heart. I think he'll resign with Chicago.

then i would def cut houston - as much as it pains me to say that. I am a big H20 fan, but he is done. Even if he could come back - I think this team has moved on beyond him. He should pack it in and we shoul dget a player who can contribute.

*Sighs* People love to write that stuff of Isiah. I hope, just for fun, that Isiah makes us win the championship somewhere down the road...
whether its layden or isaih, the writers say the same stuff. even if isaih has had no contact or interest in the player its the same thing, player making too much, bad contract, no worries, the knicks will take them off your hands because they have an endless supply of money...blah blah blah.

So if you can sign him - dont release houston and if his heart is bad, cut him instead. Would that work under the new CBA?
The way I read it is that there is a window over the summer for the tax relief cut to happen. The deadline is probably well before the season starts considering you are talking aout veteran players that will be released and the Union wouldn't want membership clamoring for a job in season. Meaning that even if ew sign Curry, it will not be possible to judge him and cut him until next summer.
