Crazy Leon and WWW were like crying as the team was center court getting accolades for moving to the finals.
Was it the enormity of the moment? The tension release? Two grown men? Two Execs of a storied franchise relieved?
Personally last year watching INdy move on I kind of felt its a bit of a fabricated ceremony, a sort of participation trophy to create interest. Kind of like celebrating the final four or the AFC and NFC championships. Its nice for fans at the moment but history will celebrate the winner while the runner up is mostly an asterisk. Its still a special season to make the finals but the Larry Bird mvp of the conf finals? The Trophy? Thats for the fans I suppose. The league does what it needs to do keep selling it.
They did not do any of this "Back in the day". You advanced. No made for TV moments. The team celebrated their accomplishments. Is it a bad thing for the league to say "Thank you for being a fan". No.
Mrs Nalod reading online how the prices are rising for finals tickets. Shaking her head in disbelief. She asked me if I wanted to go or fly to a city if need be. I pondered it and then thikming about Timothy Chamolet and Kylie, and perhaps other "Super fans". They have the money to not just be fans like I Have for 50 years but money to satisfy the need to be a part of it. Paying $3500 for the worst seats is not a vieewing experience but the price of admission to be "a part of it". Timmothy was celebrating with Jalen as if he was part of it. Fans use "WE" when talking about the teams accmplishments. "We did it", "We swept the Cavs". Any past criticisms of the team are now personal affronts and somehow "we are redeemed".
IM not breaking the bank to get to a game. Im not calling out anyone who does. Go and enjoy the experience regardless of the result. If you feel you deserve it, then you do.
I loved seeing Clyde give the trophy to Brunson. Clyde was my childhood hero and model. A reminder to be cool under pressure. In my desk drawer I own an trading card of him in a Cav's uniform. A reminder that greatness is not always rewarded with loyalty or that loyalty is not always recipricated. Its why when a player like Lebron seeks his own path and has the empowerement to do his thing it does not bother me. I have done it in my career when I felt it was not reciprocal. Why should I fault others. In time it was a small blip in Clydes career and post playing career but it must have felt awful at the time. He has mentioned it. Cleveland in 1977 sucked.
My hope is that Brunson and this group can also provide lessons for young people that one can seek other things besides money to measure greatness. The knicks with Clyde and Reed were coehesive group that came together in 1968 and over the next 6 seasons Climbed the ladder with painful defeats (Vs. Boston in 1969!) and in time won 2 chip of three trips to finals. When I say its the journey that is most important this is what I remember. Fans do feel the pain and I guess its why we feel a part of it. There are positive lessons to be learned from it. Not just bitterness.
Back to the tears: I have not read anyting about the emotional display by them but them tearing up to make the finals has to be more than just making it one more round. Im thinking Its Leon with his son who is also Jalens Agent. Their relationship with the Brunsons over many years. The hard work Jalen has put in and now celebrated at that moment. Maybe a tear for betrayiing his friend Thibs that needed to happen for that moment. That he was not celebrating as he was part of the family. Thibs played a big role in Jalens life over many years! Maybe that bringing in Mikal and not able to retain DDV knowing the bond between Jalen, Josh, and mikal is with him. Im was not thinking of knicks or its fans, but for Leon and the relationships. I hope someone writes a book about this. A story of business, relationships, family and winning. There is a lot to umpack here. The Bing Bong Mob won't bring you there.
We can pick and choose what we want from this run as fans. Get drunk and chant at a santiation working sweeping the streets, Argue over trades, free agents, who is the better fan, who never gave up, what ever. Sometimes there is more than winning. Its a great story regardless of the outcome, but for sure more epic if crowned champions!
Those tears? We have not won anyting yet but I suspect it was about the journey. Tears of Joy and pain one drop at a time.
