D'Antoni Doesn't Use Advance Scouting?

Feb 26, 2010 10:01 PM EST
On his Twitter page, Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the Cavs have drawn up a couple of new plays to incorporate Antawn Jamison into their offense.

He then says that the Knicks -- whom the Cavs play next -- will not know about the new plays because coach Mike D'Antoni "can't be bothered with advance scouting."

I think this is accurate. Anytime I see D'Antoni showing tapes it is always how his team threw a twist into the high pick and roll or some other tweak on offense. I believe he feels that if he can get his offense right then his team will win.

ROFL!!! I think I read that somewhere when he was with phoenix. He primarily relies on tape during the season and advance scouting in the playoffs.

This might or might not be accurate. Keep in mind, Brian Windhorst is a reporter for a newpaper, not a front office guy or even an actual scout in the know.

Seriously though we suck. I dont blame him for not wasting his time. Cleveland is going to beat us silly anyway.

I think this might be accurate because I have seen D'Antoni break down games and they are always games that the Knicks have already played. Generally he is talking about how the team is running the offense but on the occassions where he does talk about defense it is about a play that one of his players made in a previous game and usually the reference is to positioning or playing the passing lane. I personally have not seen him ever break down a tape and talk about a future opposing teams offensive plays or even about how to defend an individual player. Those are typical things that you hear from coaches who prepare their team defensively for their opponent.

This reminds me of JVG's first game. I don't remember who the team was going to play but I remember they were supposed to lose and they came out extremely well prepared and won. For me it was the beginning of the JVG era, the era of the underdog, where hard work and preperation led to winning. I don't think you can discount that a team prepared to play both ends of the court against each individual opponent has a better chance to win.

This is similar to Isiah not even bothering to hold practices. The season is over and D'Antoni is just going through the motions. I complain about D'Antoni alot and think we could have won a few more games if he wasnt so petty but whatever. Im expecting results next year. NO EXCUSES.

I try to find the article but I think Crush is right about this. With the Suns their director of scouting generally didn't scout teams in the regular season but as I recall devoted most of his time scouting rookie prospects in college and overseas. D'Antoni relies more on his coaching staff to review tapes from games played against his team. Thinking back to last year, MSG did a breakdown of how he prepared for his second meeting with Celtics when he decided to use Jared on Rondo. It was from his game tapes from the Suns and not advance scouting. It's just a matter of philosophy I guess but what a waste in scouting cost for the Knicks.

D'Antoni did cancel home shootarounds this season as well. I never heard if they went back to them.

Isiah did this during his last days as a Knick employee with a title for his job. He knew that he was done and didn't care anymore. D'Antoni is the third highest paid coach in the NBA. He is supposed to be a brilliant coach and a winner. I don't think he is either. I also think that while he says he hates to lose, he doesn't work hard enough to prepare his team to win. Game planning for defense in my opinion requires more scouting, coaching and practicing.

If he doesn't use advance scouting I guess it can be put into the same category as game day shoot arounds, another thing he did away with.
