Let me start by saying that I think this guy Hawes is one of the most promising young centers in the game. He made some real nice progress last season in his sophmore year.
I highly doubt the Kings would deal him but at the very least, it's interesting food for thought as we wait for the game tonight so humor me for a few mins:
Francisco Garcia just broke his arm and will be out 4 months recovering from surgery. That's a big blow for them and might be just the stroke of bad luck that open's up the Maloofs' minds to a deal. Garcia's a big, versatile & experienced part of their backcourt out there, hence the nice extension they just gave him not too long ago. As of right now, they're talking about going with a 3-guard alignment with Udrih, Evans and Martin to start off the season with. And they have a little depth with Desmond Mason, Sergio Rodriguez, Omri Casspi & Donte Greene. Not bad. But still lacking a little experience & firepower minus Garcia. And I also think their frontcourt could use an impact big. I've thought that for some time now. They haven't really gotten anything out of big money garbage like Kenny Thomas and Shareef Abdur-Rahim is actually retired and an assistant coach for the Kings right now but still carries a big $6.6 mil. dollar salary slot on their payroll according to Hoopshype (much in the same way we are still carrying Mobley's contract I suppose).
How's this deal:
Eddy Curry, David Lee, Wilson Chandler and cash consideration for Kenny Thomas, Shareef Abdur-Rahim's contract, Spencer Hawes and possibly their 2010 2nd round pick.
Again, chances of this deal happening? Probably zero. But on paper, I don't think it's that farfetched. Probably too many variables involved on both ends to ever put something like this together (Lee probably wouldn't approve a trade to go there, Curry's just such a wild card and hasn't even got on the court yet so far, Abdur-Rahim is an assistant coach for the Kings at the moment so I don't know how that would work, etc..). Yet still, there's things I like about it for both teams. The Knicks would clear Curry off the books for next year, grab Hawes who I think is gonna be a real solid man in the middle for years to come, ensure that they get something useful for Lee who still might bolt at the end of the year and hopefully even grab a high 2nd rounder out of the deal to boot. Jordan Hill immediately gets an expanded role and absorbs some of Lee's time (he's looked a little lost so far but if anything he's proven while at Arizona that he can come along & grow quickly not to mention he has an obvious high-level skillset that most people just aren't giving him any credit for having for whatever reason - igonrance mostly and I don't mean that in a bad way - it's just obvious by some of the comments on this board that not a lot of guys have seen him play in college), more PT would be available for Gallo and hopefully we land LeBron or other players to cover Chandler's departure. We then go out and sign a shooter off the scrap heap for the rest of the season (there are still several available I'm sure) & throw some meaningful PT towards Joe Crawford or Marcus Landry. Moving Lee & Chandler in the same deal is a lot I'll grant you and you can probably subtract another 10 wins or so this year with a bold move like this, but for the opportunity to shed Curry's salary & get a promising NBA center like Hawes, I think it'd be worth it for us. We'd suddenly have a ton of cap room available to start rebuilding the team. Even if Sac. refused to give up that high 2 (which could net a 1st-round talent that slips), I'd do this deal anyway. It would take some brass balls by Donnie to do something like this, but for the good of the team's future, I think I'd do it.
Sactown jettisons a useless, past his prime PF (K. Thomas) and the additional $6.6 million dollars owed to Abdur-Rahim and adds two young vets that would not only have an immediate impact for them but also gives them two well above average players that would grow with the young nucleus they've already started to put in place. Lee and Chandler combined with the few nice pieces they already have plus their 2010 lottery pick would suddenly make Sac. a much more attractive place for FAs to want to come play. Curry did lose 30-40 lbs., that's a fact - if he gets himself in game shape, he could contribute and possibly contribute in a major way, maybe even producing more than the 11 & 7 Hawes gave them last year. And if he doesn't, he comes off the books at the end of next season, (Sac has some cap room but I don't think that team is ready to lure a class A type FA quite yet - which is why I think they're one of the few teams out there that might take a chance on Curry and the 2 yrs. he has remaining. And as far as making Sac. more attractive, adding Lee and Chandler wouldn't exactly hurt them in this area as well). Jason Thompson's big enough to play the 5 and he and Lee up front wouldn't be terrible. Far from it. If I'm Donnie, to get this done, I'd agree to buy out whatever money is owed to Abdur-Rahim so he and his coaching duties wouldn't be affected.
Go ahead. Go nuts. Tell me how crazy I am. Fire away boys. I'm ready to take it on the chin with this one! LOL!!
