I am missing something. The man is on a one year contract. Why wait? Just claim him.

To claim a player off of waivers you need cap space.

yup - only way this works is if donnie buys out hughes right? i would think that's what he's been mulling over the last few days....if its worth it to get that done.

Donnie should buyout Dudu instead.

Beck now claiming...

in his latest blog

'Knicks expected to pursue Iverson'

http://offthedribble.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/18/knicks-expected-to-pursue-iverson/

With the team in a free fall, and no other help on the horizon, Knicks officials are seriously considering Iverson as a quick fix. The matter was still being deliberated on Wednesday, but one team official said the chances were at least 50-50 that they would pursue Iverson.

Another person with close ties to the team put it in stronger terms. “It’s a given,” said the person, who was not authorized by the team to discuss private deliberations. “They’re going to make the biggest play for him.”

There are strong indications that Coach Mike D’Antoni is already sold on the idea.

Huh....Its doubtful anyone claims him off of waivers. Teams will wait for him to clear waivers and become a UFA, allowing them to use the mid-level, vet min etc to sign.

BTW, buying out players usually doesn't give you cap space.

the only way we will end up getting AI is if he clears waivers & we work out a veteran's minimum or LLE contract... we already have a roster space available to add him... if we buy out Hughes it will be because of playing time issues, but Hughes is seeing regular burn these days & i don't think adding AI would take him out of the rotation... if anything, it should be Duhon who's minutes get cut off, but MDA seems to have some sort of unnatural affection for Duhon so who knows what'll happen... Dolan's gonna have to sign off on a buyout of Hughes & that's a pretty big chunk of change.

the have a roster space even with mobley on the roster. they're at 14 right now. they can't claim him because they have no cap room. but they can sign him as a FA using a portion of their MLE.

and after thinking about - i don't care if he takes shots from the kids. it will be better experience for the kids to learn how to win than to get a few more shots per game. and if we get lebron or joe johnson next season, they're gonna have to learn how to play well without getting a ton of shots anyway.

signing iverson is like practice for signing lebron. the kids better get used to not getting too many shots.

I'm not worried about AI taking shots away from the kids. Heck Gallo isn't getting enough shots from the current idiots Duhon, Al Harrington and Hughes. They regularly ignore Gallo and I bet that AI would actually be more likely to pass the ball to him. I'm just concerned that if things don't go well that it could further damage MDA's ability to get this team right.

We'll see what happens if the Knicks go get him. Anytime a player puts on our uniform i'll be pulling for him to succeed, but I did vote no, cuz I think we just don't need another circus. We've been thru that so much already.

Why would we buyout Hughes? He has been our second best, if not best, backcourt player. MDA needs to wake the hell up and sit Duhon. Why he is still starting is amazing? Hughes can run the offense as well as DUhon and he can manage to make a jumpshot. Cut Duhon, and sign AI.

i agree w/everything u said but i dunno what to expect out of MDA anymore... this is the same guy who's playing Fishlips over Jordan Hill... he seems to have that loyalty to those vet guys that are good soldier type players to a fault, no matter how crappy they're playing... i have a feeling we won't be getting AI either.

IMO signing AI is a no lose proposition. AI is one of the hardest players in the league. The guy is no more shot-happy than the current knickleheads we have on the roster and he is a definite upgrade over Duhon. Plus, he will sell tickets and at least temporarily, placate the fans. If he gives you attitude, then cut him. But honestly, as long as he gets to start, which in his mind apparently is a necessity, I don't think you will have too many other problems out of him.

u don't gotta sell me on the idea, i've been a big AI fan for a long time now... wanted the Knicks to sign him over the summer too... i just don't think we're gonna get him... Walsh is gonna say he looked into it like he always does but nothing will get done... i hope i'm wrong.

Don't underestimate Walsh's need to at least be respectable this year. He's not liking the look of this current team. He knows it reflects on him poorly that he is viewed as having left the team to bereft of talent to compete. IMO he's gonna go get Ai so that the team at least can win games! I can understand that motivation. He can't have this team be in the hunt for the top lottery pick even tho we all know about the 2010 situation.

I'm not in favor of taking the risk, tho I understand it. AI is a great player, STILL. I don't believe that he's completely lost it. I think when he's 40 he'll still be able to score. We just need to make sure that we can weave the kind of player he is into what we need for this TEAM to be successful. In a sense this roster is made for him cuz when you don't have enough scoring talent, that's when AI can be at his best, cuz he covers up all the holes on offense. Just remember his Philly teams that had no other scorers. How many guys on this team would you prefer take the shot instead of AI? Gallo...? That's not a long list and why he might just work on this team. I just hope it does work, cuz if not it just makes us look even more like a joke to 2010 FA's.

The Knicks won tonight and are now 2-9, so we don't need Iverson any more, right?
