Positives from tonight -
1. Team defense/intensity level from the end of the 1st quarter up until the half. The defense is what got us back in the game. We actually took firm control of this game playing with much higher intensity during this stretch. They hustled like I haven't seen this team hustle in a long time. They forced turnovers and bad shots by Philly all over the place which actually led to some easy buckets at the other end. Why this level of intensity wasn't sustained I don't know. Besides this impressive stretch (which gave us a ten point lead and a turnaround of about +15-20 points) we played flat, uninspired basketball for much of the 1st, 3rd & 4th quarters. If they bring effort like we saw in the 2nd quarter we can withstand some poor offensive play from time to time. If not, we're gonna get annihilated. Simple as that. That effort completely disappeared to start the 2nd half and it's inexcusable. You're gonna have off shooting nights as we've seen two games in a row now. But 100% max effort should always be there. This wasn't some back-to-back scenario on a long road trip 70 games into the season. They haven't played since last Friday and we were playing at home for the first time this season. They should've been fresh and ready to go for 48 mins., esp. with Mike playing more guys than he eventually will. Really disappointing & inexcusable.
2. Harrington - like everyone else he didn't shoot it well but the effort was there to take it to the basket and get high % shots. He played good defense (even blocked Brand's shot once or twice) and battled on the glass. He's easily our best player. This team is gonna go as far as this guy takes us.
3. Lee - played well. Competed hard on the glass as always. I have no problem with him taking mid-range jumpers. It's part of his game now. All his open mid-range attempts came within the flow & he needs to take those shots. It's not like those shots are coming at the expense of another stronger part of his offensive game - he just doesn't have another offensive dimension. He's not a post player and he's really not a guy that's gonna take you off the dribble with any kind of creativity (although I've seen a slight improvement in both areas). His offense mainly consists of mid-range jumpshots & garbage baskets around the rim. David Lee's play had nothing at all to do with us losing this game tonight. He stuck to his gameplan & played exactly how we need him to play. If anything, I thought MDA gave him too long a rest tonight for stretches but it's pre-season I guess.
4. Darko - the guy has some talent. First, he played the best we've seen him play so far, especially on defense. He blocked a couple of shots and altered at least one or two more. Second, he showed he can help this team on the offensive end of the floor a little either with his passing from the top (dude's a very good passer but once he passes the ball to a cutter or someone out high I want him to go directly to the basket and not just stand around out there) or down low when he decides to post up and look for high % shots 5' & in (had another nice looking hook shot for a score that's there ALL DAY for him if he wants it).
Negatives -
1. The amount of threes they took tonight was rediculous. Outside of Harrington, who looked good to me yet again tonight despite not shooting it that great, and maybe Nate here and there no one else on this team made a concerted effort to take the ball to the rim. Not our two PGs, not Chandler, not Gallinari. Everyone was just looking to jack up 3s it seemed. It's a big problem. They really shouldn't be allowed to take another 3 the entire pre-season. No one. The 3 ball's just a crutch for this team that'll always be there for everyone but it's the easy way out. FORCE THEM all to work the rest of the pre-season on taking the highest possible % 2-pt. shot they can take every single trip down court. Anyone who takes a 3 next game gets automatically benched for the rest of the game & even fined - that'll wake 'em up. You wanna correct the embarrassing circus act tonight with the 40 3s, you do something drastic like this. Then maybe they'll get the message. Taking 3s the way this team takes 'em is just downright lazy basketball. Nothing exciting about it.
2. Chandler - forget his jumpshooting in terms of playing the 2 spot - just in general, 2, 3 it doesn't really matter, it's just not consistent at all. Thought maybe he turned the corner as he shot it well from deep in game 1 against the Nets, but tonight he was off. I mean WAY off. And we've seen it before. I feel bad ripping him because you can tell he's a good kid and has a lot to offer but man tonight he was embarrassing out there. We saw the same thing last year at different times which had me scratching my head. He'd hit one or two all net then out of nowhere, he'd throw up an airball or a couple of bricks that aren't even close. I've never seen a player quite like him that shoots the ball like that. He's a good young two-way player with a bright future but I'd really question how much higher this guy's ceiling really is. I just don't see enough in his game or his demeanor that tells me he'll be an all-star someday. Good rotation player for any team in the league. Absolutely. Future all-star or stud? I just can't say that for sure. Haven't seen him even dunk a ball so far which kinda concerns me a little as well. When Wil's right he's playing above the rim.
3. D'Antoni's use of Jordan Hill - WTF happened tonight? The guy plays a couple of minutes, misses one baseline jumper then executes a really nice quick move under the rim and then sits the rest of the game? What's that all about? Play the guy a little and let's see what he can do.
4. Douglas - I thought he regressed a little tonight. True he played good D and was instrumental during that 2nd quarter surge but he shot the ball poorly once again and outside of that one wild drive attempt where he got bailed out with a foul, he just didn't look to break down guys off the dribble. I had a coach in middle school who used to yell "drive it, drive it, drive it" like a madman every time I touched the ball. I can still hear it in my sleep. Someone needs to be getting on Douglas like that.
5. Duhon - tonight he showed exactly why he isn't starting PG caliber. Like Douglas he just can't get to the damn rim. He looked even worse tonight as his shot wasn't falling and a lot of his passes were off the mark as well.
6. Nate & the refs - so much for not arguing with the refs. It even earned him a T after yelling at himself for missing a FT. Unbelievable. Giving him a tech. right there was a terrible call but Clyde and Breeny said the truth - you keep yappin' away and they're gonna get ya and it's bad for the team. STFU and just play hard. Enough with the nonsense Nate. Otherwise, he played well tonight. Despite Nate's physical tools I never thought he gave enough effort on the defensive end. Tonight was different. He may have played his best game defensively as a Knick tonight. And we know he can score. Something to build on if he can just cut out the other stuff. Let D'Antoni duke it out with the refs, that's why he's there. Breen called it "wasted energy." He's right.
