obm,
it's pretty common in spain, like portugal and brasil for players to use their first name on their jersey's, like in soccer. i think a few other players on the spanish national b-ball team had their first names on their jersey's as well. arguably the most famous and greatest spaniard of all time in soccer goes by the name: raúl when his real name is raúl gonzález or the first widely known ronaldo from brasil... his real name is ronaldo luís nazário de lima [Edited by - PresIke on 06-15-2009 11:35 AM] [Edited by - PresIke on 06-15-2009 11:37 AM] Forum Po Po and #33 for a reason...

with rubio, let's just forget about the offensive talent for a sec...
one of the forgotten, but major reasons he's liked is that he is 6'4" and has a really long wingspan, which he uses well on defense. he is usually all over who he is guarding, using his length to disrupt the opposing pg's ability to do what he wants, and get steals. there is no question he is not the fastest player on the court, he could gain some weight (which is gonna happen given his age), and he needs work on his jumper. however, he is an aggressive player, and seems to look to exploit any weakness he sees, often in transition, which for the knicks and d'antoni's style is really ideal. even if he doesn't become the strongest guy, he is going to gain weight. it just happens naturally, and if he gets a personal trainer with the work ethic he has, we can guess that there is a good chance he will get better in this area as well. as for his jumper, it's not awful by any means, and is something that with work can also improve. right, PresIke, that's right.
I agree with what you're saying about Rubio being aggressive and all-- and, to me, this points to one thing: Winning Brain. This kid has a winning brain, something that many athletes go entire careers without cultivating. Everything else he brings to the table is like a super cherry on top, because his Winning Brain is the driving force behind all the magic. This, to me, is the biggest draw in Rubio. Rubio:
Negatives: Has just average athleticism and adequate explosiveness, relying more on taking angles to slip through traffic … Needs to get stronger to compete at the NBA level, as he lacks the power to work his way through screens or finish consistently around the basket … Could court leader, but is a bit of a loner and just not "one of the guys" in the locker room (could be due to his very young age and a team that has lots of grizzled veterans) … Turnover prone, especially along the perimeter, as his slow release lets the opponent get into position to defend (will also get impatient at times, trying to force his shot too much when facing up vs. a stronger defender) … Still working on his scoring touch, especially ineffective shooting off the dribble … His body is still maturing and developing, but you can see that he has just average leg strength … Has a good concept for angling, but lacks the lateral agility to stay in front of slashing NBA type point guards (susceptible to back-door cuts) … Not a great leaper, failing to get good elevation when trying to execute his static jump shot, especially from mid-range and on the perimeter … Has good footwork with the ball in his hands, but does not show the explosiveness needed to finish when driving through traffic (can draw contact to get to the line, though). Jennings: Negatives: Statistics in Europe are drastically down, but it is mostly due to poor coaching (prior to the team changing the staff) and sporadic minutes, rather than a lack of ability … Few guards have the playing speed he demonstrates, but that sometimes gets him into trouble, as he tries too often to blow past his opponent rather than try to contain the tempo of the game, especially in the half court … Can make plays with either hand, but will rely a bit too often from his left side, making him predictable … Has shown great maturity and a good team-first work ethic, but is still a product of his youth and not the greatest decision maker, as he will get unselfish to a fault at times, trying to show he can play into that team concept by operating with a pass-first mentality, even when he has a better shot (ironic, considering it was just the opposite in high school) … Has improved going straight up and down with his jumper, but will revert to a process where he fades away excessively, losing elevation in the process, as the defense has had good success clogging the lane on him … Tough player, but needs to greatly improve his strength, as he struggles considerably to fight through screens, lacking the upper body power needed (opponents have good success taking him to the basket by simply putting their shoulder on him, even when he maintains position in front of the shooter) … Low percentage shooter (made a paltry 38.1 percent of his shots from the field, including 23.2 percent from three-point range this year), especially from long range, but has the ability to connect from NBA three-point range (just needs to be more selective) … Might never be strong enough or show the great desire to handle man defense assignments … Plays with a tight, low dribble, but when he gets out of control trying to slash to the basket, he does a very poor job of protecting the ball … Needs to improve his overall stamina, as his shot loses a lot of elevation late in games … While he is known as an elite ball thief, he will get a little reckless getting his long arms outside his frame, reaching and lunging trying to get to the ball from behind the shooter, resulting in a high amount of fouls (averaged more than two fouls per game, while averaging just 17 minutes of playing time) … Needs to keep his head in the game better on the defensive end, as he has become so conscious of staying in front of his man, he will bite often on fakes and hesitation moves, only to see the slasher get right by him (also lacks the "sand in his pants" to hold position on moving screens). the stop underrating David Lee movement

good point man, only thing is that with yao and ichiro that is their last name, and nene is actually his only name, officially, now.
yao is yao ming's family/surname, like in a lot of native east asian societies the last name comes first. i think ichiro is also his family/surname too, and his real name is suzuki. with chien-ming wang it's funny because he adjusted his name to american audiences, when it is normally, wang chien-ming. nene might be the best example, but he changed his name, legally, to just nene in 2003. http://www.nba.com/nuggets/news/nene_namechange_030806.html i don't know if the nba or most american pro sports allow for first names on jerseys unless that is the only name you have. Posted by PresIke: u are correct about Yao, my bad... i always thought his last name was Ming, & i'm Asian myself. Ichiro tho, is definitely his first name... i know this for a fact... his father's name is Nobuyuki Suzuki... in Japan, you would say "Suzuki Ichiro" if u wanted to be proper, but he's still usually referred to as "Ichiro" in Japan anyway cuz that's just how he likes it i guess... he's sorta known as being a little arrogant anyway. & i know Nene changed his name to just Nene but even when he was known as Nene Hilario he only had Nene on the back of his jersey. terrence williams gets a promise?
this is from his twitter: With my @sdotlambo night night twitter world Ps I think I know who I'm gonna play for also Yessir translation: "with my @sdotlambo' means he's with his ladyfriend and that's her twitter. "Night night twitter world" is pretty self-explanatory. he likes to say "Yessir' after things for emphasis. Given that he'd just worked out with Charlotte and went to dinner with Larry Brown, not a stretch to think this promise is from the Bobcats. |
