Per is a joke. Hollinger is a joke.

Many guys that play low minutes have high pers. It doesnt take in to account that players that play more minutes will have decreased production in the 35th minute than they do in the 5th minute. Still Curry had the 2nd highest per on the team last year after David Lee and by far the highest among the starters.

This is the main reason why we were so poor last year. I thought talent-wise, we had one of the worst starting lineups in the NBA last year, but our bench was very good. Hopefully, Zach will help raise the level of our starting lineup.

I don't agree with your PER comment. No stat is perfect and there is some truth to the fact that players who play less minutes aren't as tired, so they have an edge. No statistic can accurately account for that, because what handicap do you give players who play less minutes? Taking the minutes out of the equation and doing everything via a ratio is a reasonable way to do things, even if not perfect. I personally think PER does a much better job than some of the other stats that people cling to.

A good overall stat should at the very least be able to distinguish from a good player to a bad player without even hearing a guys name. PER often does not. It way over rates some guys and way under rates some guys. Maybe thats why teams have actual scouts instead of fantasy geeks at a computer.

For example if a guy has a per of 8.5 for his career with a per of 7.1 last year is he a good player or a bad player?

According to True blue thats a very bad player. Do you concur?

Knicks have been a win now team for 3 years and have 33, 23 and 33 wins to show for it.

But at least we didnt include Frye in any KG proposals a years ago.. so there's always that

Generally, yeah, that's a below-average NBA player. He could be a role player that does one thing well which is why he's on NBA rosters, but certainly not starter material.

Well thats Bruce Bowen a starter on several Spurs Championship teams. Like I said if a over all stat cant even tell you the difference between a good player a a bad player than its got too many holes.

I said generally, but does one thing very well which is why he's on an NBA roster. Bruce Bowen does one thing well -- he's an excellent defender. If he was an average defender, he wouldn't even be in the NBA.

Point taken that the stat isn't perfect. I think defensive players get severely gipped with the stats that we normally use to determine defense. Those being blocks and steals. There's a lot more to defense. I would like to see stats more like "altered shots", "tips", "travels caused", "turnovers caused", etc... which might be a better indication. So I certainly agree that PER isn't perfect, but a cumulative stat can only be as good as the stats it is based off of -- and many of those just aren't granular enough.

Isiah, isiah, isiah.

Why the hell did you trade for marbury? Why? Cuz he was a 20/8 point guard that was from nyc. Was he a throw away ******* that had a history of rubbing people the wrong way? Yes! Still he was available. Can't fault isiah for picking him up.

Craw? The dude was a 50pt scorer. Mega talented 2 guard up and coming. Isiah signed and traded him cuz the bulls wanted to sickle on jay Williams nut sack. The knicks got him fairly cheap. Did craw ever see a shot he didn't like? No! The guy is still a nice talent. All people wanna talk about is defense but the bastard is still an awesome offensive talent. Yeah his percentages suck but he is a cold blooded killer. I think it evens out. The knicks are better with craw as the starter and he keeps proving it. Can the knicks do better? You show me a player the knicks can get for him right now that is a better 2 guard. NOBODY is that much better and available!!! Like solace says "no disrespect" but shut the **** up then!!!

Isiah took a chance on Q. His back looked fine playing with pheonix. Of course Q falls apart as a knick. The guy is the same age as craw. He isn't old. I think isiah made the right choice. Q has the talent and the personality to be a nice player. Pheonix thought so when they signed him. Bad luck knicks!!! I blame that on the haters. Too much bad vibes!!! Bad energy has cursed the knicks.

Eddy curry has been a suprise. Yeah he was traded for 2 lotterys. Ask Danny ainge how fair the lottery is. Better yet ask the grizzlies. Everyone hates curry cuz he isn't Patrick ewing on defense and on the boards. The guy was a poorly coached high school kid. Isiah is the first person to coach him. Currys potential is still big. He has so much to learn and ways to get better. That's only the stuff he's good at! He hasn't perfected those things yet. If he can perfect his strengths and just get a little but better on his weaknesses, the knicks have a FORCE!!! They already have a guy that's getting triple teamed and he doesn't even know what he's doing yet. When he does and he will who will stop him?

Zach Randolph was traded for a guy that was gonna get bought put regardless, and a guy who's best skill is that he's a nice guy. Gangster! Zach is a 20/10 player. People here wanna argue about it but its too stupid to argue about. If you don't think zach is gonna make the knicks better, then what will?

Larry brown!!! I left him last. If he is available you have to get him. He wanted to come to ny. It was his dream job. Isiah went to his house and ate with his family. Everyone thought it was a good idea. Brown is the one that pissed away the season starting off by having Frye on the inactive list and starting Davis, Barnes, and Q with curry and marbs. To top that off he didn't want marbs to shoot!!! With that line-up, who is else is gonna score? Fuck him.

Anyway, this is a happy thread. Positive vibrations, yeah!!!!

Going forward the knicks need some positivity.

Anybody see the care bears movie? Here me out. At the end this bastard was gonna die, and just the love and caring hearts of the charecters and even help from the people watching the movie, chanting " we care!" save that bastard and it was a happy ending.

The knicks haven't announced a slogan for the season yet. I propose that the phrase "we care!" be shown with little stuffed animals with knick logos on their bellys! Anybody with photoshop? Get on this right now!!!!

Oh baby I'm getting the spirit againah!!!

Can I get a witnessah!!!!

The knicks will make the playoffsah! And they will make it to the NBA finalsah! They will beat mike breens favorite materbation inspiration in the western conferenceah! Mike breen will have to look at the knicks deskah! He will see gus and Clyde cheering like bitches and get a faint feelingah! He will look at his Espn partners and catch a glimpse of his wife Joey Crawford as he sits in the standsah!!! Its too much for breen, so he runs to mid court and in a loud shout he will say, "its not supposed to go this way!". Breen will then blow his brains out in an effort to taint the knicks championship as the day mike blew his brains out on national TVah! Sorry I was side tracked a little but you get the pointah!

wow.

it's time for rvhoss to lend eny his straightjacket.

i'll tell you what tho man. when this season starts i'm gonna be totally behind these knicks. i want them to go out and fight and live up to their potential. We can argue our asses off now but it's all just idle talk. if isiah gives the minutes to the deserving and these guys bust it we'll have a squad worth backing. i can't wait to take it to those ringless preening superstars in boston.

Although I appreciate the PER rating, Nix, you can't honest believe that Zach is better than Bosh and Howard. Zach hovering around #10 or #11 is not bad and nothing to be ashamed about.

PER is probably the best available statistic but it doesn't take into account help defense, man to man defense, and hustle play (basically the things Zach is really bad at). Dwight and CB4 justifiably earned all-star spots over Zach. But Zach is still a good player and 10th or 11th among PFs is nothing to be ashamed about like you said.

The thing about Zach and Lee is that they both rate out vey well in tangible stats and thus both are top 15 PF's per minute played. Whether Howard and Bosh are better players or not isn't really the point. My point is that we have 3 guys in Curry, Zach and Lee who have BIG impacts on the game. This can't be refuted. Our bigs are gonna be really good and that's a reason to be happy about this team.

TrueBlue tried to rip me for using PER as if I was saying it was the end all and be all of determining a players worth. I said nothing of the kind. It's a good stat, but not perfect. It also doesn't take into account a players intangibles, like defense or in Curry's case how he has to be defended. How many guys in this league demand the kind of attention on D that he does? Not many. He's a lopsided mismatch against most defenders and since he's so close to the basket and so efficient inside teams have no choice but to send multiple defenders at him. If you don't he's gonna score at a 60%+ clip and wear out your bigs.

Curry, Zach & Lee don't help defend very well. This won't show up in a PER stat. Still we just need those guys to give more effort in the team concept and I suspect that they'll be more than OK. Let's face it, this is never gonna be a great defensive team, but at least we have some decent defenders coming off the bench. We need to concentrate on better team D. If we simply cut down on our TO's and tigten up our defense of the 3pt line, that alone should help us to win more games. Teams will have a tough time stopping us, but we have to give an improved effort to try and slow teams down ourselves.

Not true PER includes Steals, Blocks, and Rebounds which are all characteristic of Hustle and Defense. If you take Steals and Blocks and Rebounds out of PER, Zach would rate even higher (though he is a good rebounder already).

But PER has other problems:

It cannot quantify such intangible qualities as leadership, durability, etc. The projections also don't include defense beyond blocks, steals and fouls, partly because the league has opted to make this area a void in terms of stats. In this way, invaluable lock down defenders such as Bruce Bowen, who simply shut down their assigned man and either hold them to a low field goal percentage (or prevent them from getting off shots at all), are not well reflected by PER.
