But in your example - with Wemby coming out this year.

Couldn’t a very good team like say the Bucks - completely tank the 2022 season with the intention of posting a great win differential with a great 2023 record.

When there is a great player in draft - teams would find ways to tank regardless if it’s a year earlier.

They can do that already? Just straight take a year and tank.

It’s only labeled a fix cause it is shrouded within a lottery situation. When any other corporate entity makes a big decision like this (ie does the same thing relatively speaking), it is not a “fix”, it’s just a smart business decision, done every day a million times over.

The NBA is a business at its core to make money via providing entertainment. You get over the mental hurdle of considering the NBA as just a pure basketball venue (who happens to have a lottery every year) over more of an entertainment one that is $ driven, and it’s easier to envision, simple in fact.

Let’s state this again so it’s clear as day. The NBA is an entertainment business at its core whose vehicle is basketball (I think the classic MBA 101 example is that McDonalds is more of a real estate franchise and location business rather than a burger or fast food joint business, and that may be a good example of something whose core business is masked as something else). The NBA is not a pure basketball organization whose side hustle is to make money via TV contracts and etc. The NBA does need to “sell” the idea of lottery (and prob is real most of the time) but at its core, $ decisions will always prevail over the purity of a lottery or even straight basketball. Those decisions do have to be timely and work out, whatever that really means.

At the highest levels, the world moves on leverage. And you have to have enough of it and it has to be timely to get what you want. Using leverage with multiple completing interests is HARD to do, just look at any govt or corporation or even household decisions, every situation can get messy. Peter Holt gotta be a master at it and he and Stern prob know where all the bodies are buried.

Anyone think the NBA was going to allow Wemby - quite possibly THE most significant prospect in any and all sports - to land in a ****hole organization like Charlotte and forgo the league wide benefits of having that player some place where he would thrive?

The nba draft lottery encourages losing and it hasn’t stopped tanking. It also gives fans of bad teams another loss that’s not even during the regular season because they have to watch the hornets or spurs get the top pick after they endured an entire season of dumpster fire

The NFL draft is the way to do it. Worst team gets the top pick. If the nfl had the draft lottery anytime the patriots, cowboys or Steelers miss the playoffs coincidentally they are getting the top pick and you better not question it

Tanking is a hard thing to solve but I rather genuinely bad teams get higher picks. The Grizz who had a really good team moved up and got Ja over legit bad teams. That is not good for the NBA. The Pistons are legit bad and moved back.

Maybe I’m missing something but I was responding to the comment in this thread that says team with biggest win increase gets the #1 pick.

Isn’t that different from today where even if you tank for worst record you still have to win the lottery drawing.

Do you think a kid from just outside of Paris on the brink of world fame would want to live there?

He probably wouldn't care... Unless the other choice was the team where the national hero and possibly his country's greatest player called home. I'm sure the chance to follow in Boris Diaw's footsteps is appealing.
