Pretty much. Smart is so bad at offense but takes so many shots that he offsets his defensive prowess. He’s like the anti-Fournier. EvanMarcus Fournier-Smart would be one effective player. Hard pass. Only deal that could have been mentioned was taking back Smart to get JJJ. That’s over now.

I think the waiting a year is about 2 year extension or 4 year extension. No mention of valuation. With an increasing cap, locking in for 4 years saves us money regardless of what his actual contract value ends up being.

After trading DDV, I dunno if this whole Nova Knicks discount to keep them together thing has bona fide merit. Might just be talk. As much as I agree with the Randle/KAT swap, not sure moving DDV was the best move. Has to have added doubt to the locker room. It definitely caught me off guard that they included DDV.

Yep. Mikal became 2 year extension eligible Oct 1, but he can only do 5% raises right now. If he waits 6 months after traded, it's 4 years and 8% or something like that.

Mikal can sign a two-year, $72.5 million extension on October 1 or he will be eligible for a four-year, $157 million extension in the next offseason. I think. So it is a timing thing.

My guess: Before trade, Leon made sure he understood the high level parameters of what Mikal would be looking for. Things can certainly change but you just want to rule out the bonkers contact demands and lay down some foundation for discussion long term to know exactly when you will cross that 2nd apron with the Brunson extension.

The six-month rule also limits the size of raises on that new contract to 5%, he would make less in future years.

Even if Bridges is willing to take a financial discount (as Brunson did) he will want the security of four years over just two, so it makes sense to wait until next summer to get an extension done.

Ok this makes more sense then, if he wants the years first and foremost. Better for us as well. He might still play ball with some apron management discount and just wants the 4 year deal.

We obviously don’t have a clue how players and agents and FO teams do these things. Years, total amounts across the years, opt out, ascending/descending all come into play. Extend sooner, have less player leverage and are more tradable. All of those things come into play.
