Lawson was picked in the late teens but I get your point. David Kahn was a jackass...and I'm not goo sure that Phil isn't too far behind.
Nothing Phil did or can do will come close to this -
They flipped Lawson for a draft pick.
Drafted Luke Babbit and traded him and Ryan Gomes for Martell Webster - Multiple surgeries later they released Webster.

Then they made a 47MM offer to Batum and later realized they didn't have enough cap space to make good on the offer.

To make cap room the bought out Webster and Darko(yeah that Darko). Then Portland matched their offer for Batum!!

Then they signed Brandon Roy out of retirement - he played 5 games and retired again

Remember Johnny Flynn? (I mean how many people have a Y and two Ns in both their first and last names???)
They traded him and the rights to donatas Montiejunas for the rights to Mirotic and Parsosns to teh Rockets.
Then sold Parsons BACK to the Rockets!!!!!
I SWEAR YOU CAN"T MAKE THIS STUFF UP
Kahn is no doubt worse but I also think he's had more of an opportunity to demonstrate how bad he is. Let's not forget that "our" guy traded away one of the best big men in the league (Tyson Chandler), whose style of play was en vogue, for one of the worst contracts in the league (Jose Calderon)...who would later require an asset to get rid of (Robin Lopez). "Our guy" is also the guy that picked someone like Cleanthony Early ahead of future superstar prospect Nikola Jokic. "Our guy" is the guy that gave Joakim Noah the 2nd worst contract in the league behind Chandler Parsons. "Our guy" is the guy that gave away assets for a one-year rental of Derrick Rose that most in the league knew was a terrible gamble from jumpstreet. If not for Kristaps Porzingis- who wouldn't have been picked had Okafor or Russell been available- Phil's tenure here would be considered an unmitigated disaster. I hope we get rid of him ASAP.
Chandler and Melo couldn't stand each other and Chandler had to be traded when the rest of the league knew we couldn't bring him back. Spin that anyway you want but nothing any GM can do when trading with their hands tied behind their back. And one of the best big men - thing is a bit of a stretch, he could barely stay on the floor.
Second Round picks are what they are. Some you hit some you miss
Joakim Noah was a horrible contract, so was Melo and the NTC
Derrick Rose was a rental to appease Melo - In fact Melo clearly said he was happy with our off season moves (Rose and Noah) and new coach. In the off season Melo asked Phil to upgrade the PG position - He did that with Rose/Jennings - It wasn't a terrible gambit at all - it was high risk - high reward scenario that did not pan out
What I like about Phil's tenure is that he hasn't mortgaged our first round draft picks to go on some wild goose chase starfukking scheme
I am perfectly comfortable with risk taking and don't expect them to always pan out. In fact I am perfectly ok with multiple small losses (like Rolo, Grant, Rose) to land a few big ones (KP, Willy(TBD))
By itself I did not like the Rolo for Rose trade, still don't. But he was trying to put a win now team together. It's not like elite PGs are available via trade. Whatever "star" you get will have baggage unless you are an established championship contender before you trade for the star.
Chandler tried to recruit Melo to Dallas. Chandler didn't like Woodson and tried to sabotage him. He spent his last season in ny hurt, sick and in Steve Mills ear complaining. Chandler was a total no show in the Indiana series and he chose that time to call out his teammates. Phil's plan was to change the culture. An oft injured saboteur didn't fit that vision. Neither did a just arrested Felton. But Chandler wasn't a must trade guy. His deal was expiring in a year. He also still had a lot of value and the Knicks weren't trading with their hands tied behind their back. Phil valued Jose in that deal and thought Dalembert could replace Tyson. Anyone with any knowledge of the league knew Dalembert was a dog. Phil struck out on Early and could have had Crowder. He was talking about how small Larkin's hands were after trading for him.
***The Knicks sucked really bad at the point last year. Are you saying Phil didn't recognize that and Melo had to 'ask him' to upgrade? Really? The guy won 11 championships. Also, Phil hired a coach that was most successful playing a two point guard line up. You didn't think that Phil was trying to support his new coach when he got nba caliber point guards? There was a insider/leak post where it was reported that the Knicks had decided they were done with Grant. I believe that was before the trade.
You are right about Phil not mortgaging first round picks for the future but the first pick he could trade is the 2018 pick. Also, different reports have come out about the Knicks backing out of the Lowery trade when they would have traded the 2018 pick. Some of them have said that Dolan put a stop to trading picks.
Phil has been really bad. He has four moves that were competent in my opinion. The Shved trade, KP, Willy, and signing Rolo. You could make an argument that Lee was a good signing but you could make the same argument that it was bad. Hornacek should have been his fifth but he sabotaged that. Moves for players 10-15 have been okay but they don't move the needle in my opinion.
