after the 2011 lockout if a player was ever designated after their rookie contract was up, teams could sign the player to a higher max contract to keep them. you get the designated tag by one or more of the following ways...being named the league MVP, being twice named to the all-nba team, or being a two-time starter in the all-star game. theres only been a handful of guys that have ever achieved this, so the rule states you can only have one of these players on your team at a time if you acquired the player via trade. so since rose is on the roster already, that means we can't have griffin too.

the nba wants these home-grown players staying with the teams that drafted them, hence the clause, making it harder for other teams to acquire them.

I think you have to ask yourself if we're better off with or without Melo for the next 2 and a half years?
Are we better off going with a complete rebuild cause if we are then Melo has to go for that to happen?
Are you ready for at least 3 years of being an average to bad team which is at least the amount of years it will take to get the team respectful enough to start competing every night?

If he could put Boston, Washington and any other teams that have young players and draft picks to trade that would be big for us. we won't get a haul IMO. And it's looking more and more like it will need to be a multi-team deal, if any reports are partially true (e.g., Celts don't want Melo). The two most likely landing spots would be Clips and Cavs. Clips won't part with big 3 and even if they wanted to, I suspect Melo would be reluctant to go -- how would that affect their odds of a championship. Perhaps something can be worked out with Blake and other teams but would be complicated. Cavs parting with Love has some logic to it, but still would seems like a multi team deal. Love to Celts, picks and players to NY, Melo (and Championship) to Cavs. Of all the landing spots this is the most logical to me in terms of fit. It could be the thing to put Cavs over GS. Lebron needs rest and Melo can spell Lebron in those moments being the guy. When Lebron and Melo play together it could be devastating because Lebron would be smart with the ball. This to me is the one that makes the most sense. We could even throw in Jennings if they need another pg, and if we can't expect much from haul for Melo, Celts might send assets to both NYC and Clevland in some manner to balance things out for Love.

So your saying the biggest reason we get rid of Melo, now, is to clear cap space? What happened to rebuilding? Getting draft picks? Making team better? Why not just waive him then? Phil would be happy. So we clear up 25M or so a year. Now what? We get two more guys like Noah and Lee for 25M. Then we bitch about them for the next few years? Seems to be like Phil's ego is so big he needs to reboot every time his cleansing does not work, because he cant face any bad decisions on his part. This will be his third time around for a reset. He has 2 more years, so how many more does he need? And pleas don't say, "yeah we got KP, WIlly and Kuz though". That was Gaines. And they have shown to be good but very inconsistent and have a long way to go before we crown them All Stars, starters or solid NBA players. And if we were going to tank three years in a row, why did we need Phil? Just higher really good international and college scouts.

Phil was doing two things at once. Giving it a go with Melo and some vets while also continuing to bring in youth and retain our picks and cap flexibility!!! People tend to keep forgetting these facts. Phil has maintained a degree of flexibility which other Knicks GM's failed to do. Who else did what Phil has in terms of keeping his options open???

He needs to sit down with rose and melo and explain to them the art of winning, instead of throwing your hands up and giving up..

I disagree. this is a prime year to move Melo to the cavs. they need to improve if they're going to seriously challenge GS, especially since they added KD. Lebron knows this and that's why he's going public

We'd have to strengthen their backcourt bench in the process. If we do, I'd see them making the deal with Love. The question now is what veteran PG is available that can play D and hit the open 3?

The cavs are not having trouble scoring, How does melo even fit into their offense. They will be in cap hell with, labron 30 mill, love 20 mill, melo 24 mill, Irving 18 mill, triston 20 mill..and a bunch of washed up role players..
Who wants 5 guys on roster taking over a 100 mill of the cap, and outside of labron, non if the rest are durable players.

Cavs said no. They are out of the Anthony trade talk.
