I meant it was OK for him to seek that much money - it's not like he was taking up valuable, limited cap space. I'd take as much of George's money as he'd be willing to give me.

So the cheater's money is "legitimate" while Melo's money (earned fair and square) is somehow improper...A-rod is a steroid abuser, NOTHING in his baseball career is legitimate, not his legacy, his money, or his records. Give me an over-priced ballhog over a cheater anyday.

Another thing, there may be no salary cap in baseball, but if you're demanding ridiculous money from a team you wish to sign with you are still limiting them financially, the parameters are just not as concrete. Not even the Yankees have unlimited spending money.

I haven't seen the evidence against A-Rod. So I don't know if he's a cheater. I don't just believe everything Bud Selig tells me to believe. He may well be a cheater but I'll wait until they show the evidence.

ARod admitted to it in 2009.

Arod being a cheater is irrelevant. Basketball has a cap. Baseball does not. Knicks are over the cap and screwed. Ynakees are screwed for different reasons mostly Cashman and the originations failure to develop young talent.

Baseball has an extremely escalated luxury tax penalty system which starts at $189 Mil plus salary in 2014 .....so Arod's significant salary is a detriment. I'm not sure how you can disparage Cashman. The Yankees have only missed the playoffs once in the past decade and won their last Championship in 2009. My only guess is that you would rather them be run similar to a team like the Mets....always bringing up young guys and rarely in the playoff hunt. The Yankees are lackluster this year but have had numerous and significant injuries to key players. They may even have a down couple of years.....but I am not sure how Yankee fans can complain all that much with 27 Championships overall, 7 World Series Appearances and 5 Championships in the past 2 Decades. But then again, some people like to complain about everything.

A-Rod didn't know there would be harsher luxury tax in 2014. The topic of discussion here is his decision making when he signed the contract.

We're talking about what if Melo demands the max $129 mil extension

My guess is this is already a done deal as it was for Allan Houstan. Melo will get paid.

Does he go to bidding? doubt it.

in 3 years will knick fans write "we bid against ourselves!!"? You bet.

If knicks ownership (not just the GM, no GM writes the checks!!) wants to dole out 129mil thats their business. If not, will another team step up? I doubt it.

Lebron will be up for the same thing. Love for him to join Melo in NY, but I doubt that happens. I would love it if he went back to cleveland and lead them youthier squad now.

Melo doesn't know what the final salary cap will be from year to year. The onus is on the team to manage salary and not the players. The Yankees signed ARod to the revised contract most likely due to him reaching the Home Run record in a Yankee uniform and the fanfare and financial benefit that would be associated with that move......they also re-signed ARod when Hank Steinbrenner was pretty much solely at the helm (enough said). Whether ARod knew what the tax would be or not is irrelevant, he is still a liability at this point.

In terms of the Knicks future salary structure.....if Melo demands the max extension......the Knicks should not re-sign him. As an aging player he will be a liability. However, if the Knicks choose to re-sign him at that money, it will be their own fault, not his.

In terms of the Knicks current salary structure......the biggest liability remains Amare. If that salary was put allocated to functioning players......the Knicks would most likely be a better team.

I agree 100% it would be the Knicks fault and we know they will give him the $129mil and sell a playoff team to the general public. The diehards will continue to suffer. I will continue to envy other great owners

Look at the Red Sox. Stacked wih homegrown talent and they've won 2 World Series recently to the Yankees 1. The Yankees are in for 1960's and 1980's hard times. Now that the core Yankees will soon all be retired

I cant fault any player for getting what they can, and even if they take less there's no guarantee they win even then.

But the Knicks have history of rewarding loyalty...Melo will get his money.

I wouldnt be suprised if Amare got longer deal as well....of course not max.

i can. with some people too much money is never enough. ah the guaranteed contract... no incentive required.

surely there is a point at which a person has exploited a situation to his advantage such that all that remains is a legacy. he got his big payday in 2011 and has now been struggling to win as a result.

carmelo anthony will have earned 136 million dollars by the end of this season-- first round exit, second round exit... he still gets paid.

if he values his legacy-- very doubtful actually-- then he should wrap his feeble mind around making merely another 100 million dollars over the following 8 years after that, or the balance of is career.

that means he will have made 235 million dollars over his career and if he plays until he is 38 he will have averaged 12,600,000 dollars a season for his career.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

I hear you, just me, as a man, i cant count this guys money.

Sure I'd love for him to take less to HOPEFULLY build a better squad, but there's no guarantees the team could do it even if he took a min salary, him making less doesnt equal better team, just opens up the possibility.

Speaking of legacy, he could actually retire today and go into the HOF, the only thing he hasnt accomplished is an NBA title.

And thats not bad company as others whom have been better players didnt win either.

better to have a possibility than no chance at all. the hard thing about this situation is that of all the max players i can think of he tops the list of being the most difficult to win with as the main guy. the smarter ring-chasing vets that might come here might well recognize the futility of playing on a carmelo-centric team if the goal is winning... and decide to look elsewhere. therein lies the rub and is why i would love to be able to trade him and start over.

So essentially it really doesnt matter if he takes a reduce pay or not.

To build around melo, you have to have two main components.

1) Players that he respects, and I dont mean friends and former teammmates, but players he knows are about the "W", and can go out and get it....why is why I truly believe the Knicks are gonna miss those old cats....they knew Melo was the star, but when THEY played, he didnt play his normal way...he played inspired.

If you keep Melo...you have to bring in a true "alpha" whom will not allow melo to do what he winds up doing.

There is one player that would make him fly right, but he isnt available at the moment...Kobe, but he's available next season.

2) Some players who are efficient on offense and at what they do best.....there are some pieces of that on the latter part.

This would be the hardest to achieve imo.

Even with a sizeable reduction, I cant see the team bringing in whats needed to compete.

i like rondo. he has a ring and cane thisclose to a second one. some question his character and his psyche, but frankly the issue of carmelo "respecting" another may have more to do with melo as anything else regardless. hence the argument for getting rid of carmelo anthony the sooner the better.

i just wish he would dedicate himself to being in supreme shape and aim to be an all-nba defender. he just exudes complacency, conceitedness, and laziness. at the same time he lacks savvy and guile.

better to have a possibility than no chance at all. the hard thing about this situation is that of all the max players i can think of he tops the list of being the most difficult to win with as the main guy. the smarter ring-chasing vets that might come here might well recognize the futility of playing on a carmelo-centric team if the goal is winning... and decide to look elsewhere. therein lies the rub and is why i would love to be able to trade him and start over.

Just wondering who Carmelo is accused of disrespecting. I haven't heard any of his teammates say this about him but I may have missed it.
