I think more than anything defensively is where he would need to improve. He would need to improve his lower body strength to play the 3 for starters and become a better technical defender.
Yellow - if JR Smith improved his lower body strength any more he would be jumping over the backboard. Think about what you wrote. By any physical measure, Smith is an identical match for Kobe Bryant. Are you suggesting Kobe needs to improve his (cough) lower body strength?
What is your measure? JR has played more minutes than anyone on the roster and you think he is not strong enough? Lower body strength? Dude, he is not an offensive tackle.
C'mon Son.
Earl Smith Jr is by no means perfect, but your purely arbitrary criteria borders on comedy. He is learning to get in where he fits in. 2013 NBA Sixth man Of the year does not suck that bad. Did you catch how proud he was of that recognition? That is a huge step forward for a former problem man child.
Besides, he is a swing man, not a typical anything. He is a work in progress.
Let us hope the tough love Mike Woodson has shown him will lead to another productive night as a leader.
DO you know Kobe workout standards? DO you know JR's? DO you think Jr puts in as much work on his body as Kobe does and did? You think Kobe hired Tim Grover to work on his shot? Now he worked on strengthen his body and many other things. When it comes to JR starting for the Knicks he would need too strengthen his lower body and core to defend the three. Right now he battles but can get muscled by some 3s. Even if he was at the top of his game, which he is not, he has things he can improve. Also, this is not about his endurance but combining that with improved physical attributes. That added strength might not only help him defensively but maintain his height on his jumper late.
As a work in progress as you stated he must continue to improve his body, game, mind , and soul.
Maybe you expect JR to stay a good player but I won't him to achieve greatness. HE has it in him.
