i think King has done a passable job, actually. adding joe johnson was a decent move. signing deron williams is HUGE for them. if they'd lost deron, they'd be screwed beyond belief.
the big mistake was making the joe johnson move and gerald wallace extension BEFORE acquiring dwight. once they lost that cap room, they lost all leverage in the dwight negotiations.
BUT, if the Nets kept their cap room, they'd have a SKELETON crew surrounding deron and a very likely chance deron wouldn't come back. so they were in a major pickle. wait a year for dwight and risk losing deron. or lose leverage in the dwight deal and keep deron and surround him with a decent cast and to be fair joe johnson gives them a nasty backcourt combo.
basically, dwight completely screwed them when he signed his ETO waiver. dwight could've been a free agent RIGHT NOW and just signed with the nets this summer. but he wanted the true max money that comes with re-signing with the magic. he basically greeded himself out of the deal.
seeing how these deals can blow up, it does make me think the knicks did a good job to finally actually get melo. whether melo was the right target is another issue, but i think they did well to seal the deal. those saying what a huge package the knicks gave up, witness ray felton scrounging for a minimum deal, gallo and wilson are nice pieces who combined put up melo numbers, mozgov is a big question mark who i'd trade 18 times over for camby until camby was 50. not to mention chauncey from that deal became DPOY Tyson Chandler. so. the knicks did okay.
