Say What?

Woodson is not old school. He is pragmatic. He is also intelligent enough to know that imposing any "style" is a waste of time. Woodson confessed he is still learning the team, so that implies it is a work in progress. For an 8-1 head coach on a roll, progress is good.

knicks1248 wrote:IMO he adjusted so much to melo that he started thinking, **** it, your the best passer and scorer on the team, you run it..Now you putting this guy in a role he's never been in..ever

Woodson has NOT adjusted to Melo. He convinced Anthony (along with the rest of the roster) that defense came first, and then put Carmelo in a position to do what he does best on offense. He challenged Carmelo to lead by example and Carmelo responded.

Since D’Antoni’s departure three weeks ago, the Knicks have vaulted from 10th in the league in defensive efficiency to fifth, allowing just over 97 points per 100 possessions. That is just a a little behind Miami, and also not that far behind Boston, Chicago and the league-leading 76ers.

Over the last 10 games, the Knicks are allowing a paltry opponent field goal percentage of 40.5 percent, compared with a shade over 46 percent pre-Woodson. Ditto opponent 3-point percentage: the Knicks are holding their foes to a mere 29.8 percent behind the arc, versus north of 35 percent before the coaching change. Forced turnovers, opponent rebounding, opponent assists – all of these have improved markedly as well. (Statistics are from NBA.com.)

Woodson did NOT single out Carmelo, he challenged everyone.

The proof is in the proverbial Jello pudding.

Although I think Woodson fits this team well i still think knicks with d'antoni would have still doen well if melo would have just played hard. Im glad he is now but the truth is everyone bought in. But thats the past now im juust glad we are winning

I disagree, this team went to war against philly in PA and I don't think that happens before. This team doesn't take that punch in Indy without Woodson. We probably are talking about excuses right now without Lin and JJ2 and Stat and Iso ball killing instead of great defense and post ups and ball movement.

Once again i never said d'antoni should be here instead od woodson i just think that if for the sake of argument d'antoni was still here and melo played hard all season they could have still been at least in the 6th spot. I mean im nit defending d'antoni im just trying to be fair

What a joke...........

I'm glad that you are so into me that you remember the things I say. The points I made have merit and are factual. You do need to play a more balanced style of ball to win against the best teams in the East. We can't just live off our Defense and fail to execute on offense. We needed Melo to play more efficiently than he had been. He's had one good shooting game!!! The team as a whole has been doing well in scoring off their defense, which is great! Still they need work on scoring against a set defense as well. The Bulls and Heat play great D as well. That won't be a major advantage against those teams. When our defense is canceled out by their D we have to be able to score more efficiently as well.

We have been waiting for Melo to be the reason we win games. Do you have some other facts to refute this? Melo has just now had a couple of games where he did his job! Big freakin deal!!! We'll need more than 2 games out of an entire season.

I was restating the facts of what has been said about Woodson and widely known from his time in ATL. Was I making it up?

The stats back up my contention that the defense was good when STAT and Melo weren't on the court and his teams in PHX were actually not bad defensively, but would've been much better if not for having STAT and Nash up the middle of the defense. Again what part of those statements are inaccurate???

How can my statement of facts make me a joke? Only in your world does fact make someone funny.

Well i still don't buy that. When Melo had to play point he wasn't playing hard??? With the injuries and no point guard, stat still coming back to form, no baron, Jr, JJ2 out to start the season, TD burned out, did all of this happen because melo wasn't playing hard???

Only with Linsanity are people saying he didn't buy in, so out those 9 or so loses how many are you saying we would have won if Melo would have played great standing in the corner we would have won???

Because just like talking heads, when what ever attack you are spewing for the week dies out, you just move on to a new talking point to absolve MDA of any wrong.

You post about Stat being the reason why MDA couldn't win Phoenix, until Mike Woodson get's 30 year old bad back, still recovering from the off season surgery Amare to play pretty good defensively. It might by be only 8 games, but how come MDA couldn't get 24 year-28year to play D at all??? MDA get's his team to play D for 7 games in either of Conference finals games and he might have had a title.......oh it's time for the new talking point.

That's basically you in a nutshell, talking points and more talking points.
You whine about Carmelo not wanting to play off the ball with MDA and then change your tune to why isn't he sole the reason why we are winning (ie points), while discounting all the great team play he has giving the team in the latest streak.

You whine when ever a guy like JJ2 was out or not having his pointguard when MDA was coach, but the knicks just beat two playoffs team handily with JJ2,Lin and Stat out.............. but all you see now is "this won't last against the really good teams". Really, now you are gun ho for projecting what the future holds when the whole team is playing great but a month ago you wanted to freeze out our best players and have the whole game plan be about a point guard we picked up off wavers??? Nothing wrong with that teams future!??

And what happened to it's all MDA's offense, Woodson all he knows is ISOJoe ball. All the while he is getting more of the team offensively than the Genius ever did. Those Carmelo post up looked great last night and all you care about is claiming the team isn't out of the woods yet.

You think it's about talking points? That's your opinion and I can't argue with you about that. I stand by everything i've posted. In the end we'll see how things turn out in the long run. I'm hoping the team still reaches their goals for the season. I'm not sitting here hoping that things go wrong. I've NEVER rooted against the Knicks. I'm not wired that way. I've been a fan since 73 and nothing will ever change that. Not a coach or a player.

I've stated that I like the job that Woodson is doing with the team. Just because i've supported MDA doesn't mean i'm against Woodson and any success he may have. Woodson has flaws just like MDA had flaws. I didn't make up "ISO Joe" that was the going opinion of the man and part of why he was fired. Here he's shown more flexibility, but I also think the offense hasn't always looked fluid. I'm hoping that Woody gets it done just as I was hopeful that MDA would get it done. It's about the team first. That won't stop me from giving my opinion of what I see. Teams have to get it done on both ends of the floor. That's all i'm saying.

My complaints about Melo have also been factual. I have a problem with him because he admitted to not giving max effort all year until MDA resigned and then magically he started playing hard as hell on D and trying to be the perfect teammate tho struggling on O. He could've done this all along and the team wouldn't be fighting for the 8th seed. Melo had one good shooting game and 9 poor shooting games. Melo has been at 40% all year and only recently picked up his effort level as it should be. Those are the facts. Those aren't talking points. Those are facts. You want me to give Melo credit for playing like he cared for 9 games? To hell with that. He's supposed to be a leader of the team, effort is the last thing we should be worrying about.

nixluva, let's put aside your crusade against Carmelo for a moment.

Instead, let us take another look at Iman Shumpert. Remember the early season embarrassment of him shooting three after three on national television in Memphis?

Shumpert was 3 of 15 in the first half, 5 of 20 overall with 6 turnovers. He was ripped by the commentators early and often. Think about a rookie, a rookie, being allowed to play so out of control.

Do you think Mike Woodson would stand for that?

In games, Woodson exudes Knight’s steely discipline, stopping players on the sideline to deliver an impromptu lecture.

In his verbiage, Woodson sometimes assumes Brown’s philosopher-coach persona, speaking earnestly of “playing the right way” and the need to “teach” his players.

Though his Hawks playbook was derided as isolation-heavy, Woodson actually favors the share-the-ball mentality preached by Holzman. And off the court, Woodson radiates Fitzsimmons’s collegiality, with a far-reaching network of N.B.A. friends who praise his dedication, his passion, his sense of humor and his loyalty.

More important, Woodson just sounds like a better person.

That just cements any doubters of what a shietty job D'Antoni had done. Shumpert shooting more than his 2 $20mill stars in the 1st half and game overall. AND DON'T BRING UP THAT BOSTON (PIERCE)GAME....GOD THAT WAS AWFUL!!!

How about TD before HE WAS FREAKIN BENCHED was leading the Knicks in 3 pt attempts at < 25%???

mrKnickShot - There were too many games where Toney Douglas was attempting more shots than the player we chanted MVP for last season.

Ridiculous undisciplined imbalance.

I'm question your integrity. Like we all know all the spread sheets you have for MDA's teams, but when it comes to Woodson it's " I didn't make up "ISO Joe" that was the going opinion of the man and part of why he was fired."
That makes you a joke in my eyes, that only sees what you want and uses your spread to prove what you want.

And Carmelo season didn't start 7 games after Linsanity, it started with him playing point forward and getting hurt unlike what you wanna make it out to be. He didn't just join the knicks after that 7-1 run.

To say Melo didn't play hard at all until after MDA was fired is a joke. Not only did he try, but he tried on different outfits, whatever outfit he needed to wear to help the team win, and when the losses piled up, he along with his crew became disheartened with the Tailor. Melo realized that the Tailor, though a nice guy and the rep of putting together pretty outfits to look at, the main outfit he wanted Melo to suit up in, didn't fit. And the stubborn Tailor didn't want to adjust the outfit eventhough that should be a job requirement.

Coaches wear alot of hats. Coach, teacher, Psychologist, Saleasman, etc. The players are buying what Woodson is selling, and credit goes to Woodson for that.

Its not that Melo didn't try, he tried in a variety of ways to help the team win. Melo started the year playing point forward, a position he wasn't comfortable in but did it for the sake of the team. For the first time in his career, a usual scoring forward had to get his own and help everyone else get thiers too. He struggled in his new role, no doubt, but he tried.

Speaking of playing hard, Melo won the Boston game on Christmas. Nevermind that he dropped 37, but he made the key baskets down the stretch to bring us back and seal the deal. He had games of 30+ in 3 straight games. Difficult to do that when you dont play hard. Despite scoring the ball, we were still losing so he stepped back, tried to incorportate his teammates more, moved the ball, and decreased his shot attempts. Still the L's piled up. Why did they pile up? Because Stat wasn't in shape, Feilds coulnd't buy a jumper and was playing up and down like the 2nd rounder he is, Douglas was horrible, Shump is a rook and Bibby is a shell of himself. JR was still in China, Lin was on the end of the bench, Davis was rehabing and JJ2 was still in and out of the line up. Not to mention, our coach would start each post game conference with After Linsanity and Melo came back, I saw effort from Melo in Milwaukee, Boston (he made two potential game winners but our genius of a coach loss that game for us with the stupid timeout, then not fouling), in Chi, in San An, in Miami, etc. I will admit that Melo looked disheartened in the Dallas game after getting ignored by his teammates when he was in good scoring position.

To say that Melo is the sole reason why weren't winning before is short-sided, agenda-driven, ignorant to the nuances of the coaches job and just looking to absolve to coach. To blame Melo, solely for the lack of defense the team played before would mean you must give Melo all the credit for defensive surge the entire team is having now. Right? Of course not. Melo isn't single handedly holding teams to below 90 since MDA walked away. The team is. Woodsons team to be exact. Melo has looked better offensively because the Woodson has recognized when most of have been calling for all season. Melo isn't Shawne williams, so Woodson moved him from behind the 3 point line and put him in hte post where he belongs. But ontop of the that, the priorities have changed. No more in the post game conference do we here our coach say, "We need more floor spacing and ball movement," even if the other team scored over 100-110 pts.

No more eqaul opportunity offense, as Woodson is playing to his best players strenghts as it should be. And mainly, he's holding his players, including Melo, accountable. The team tried out what MDA was selling and it didn't work out. Woodson's brand has the whole team buying in and its beautiful to watch.

+1 To me(and looks like several fans), Mike D'Antoni is a one trick pony. He has his system and refuses to bend it to any player no matter what his personnel is. You saw this in his lack of in game adjustments. You saw this in his inability to stop the constant switching in the beginning of the season. You saw this in his refusal to bench Toney Douglas earlier, even though it was evident to everyone on the court his shoulder and confidence wasn't right. His inability to post up Melo on the block consistently like how Woodson is damning. How could you not utilize someone that's a beast in the post like that knowing Melo's wrist was still iffy. Just SMFH at any defense of D'Antoni coaching with all these examples. AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THAT BOSTON GAME AGAIN...GODDAMIT!!!

DAMN MDA woodson is making you look bad
