Walsh said today he's only sitting out the preseason for precautionary measures so I highly doubt he's gone for the year.

The thing is that no one really knows how this will play out. It's never good when you hurt your back, but it doesn't seem like he's done any damage needing surgery. Like he said, he's gonna have to take measures to deal with this so that he doesn't aggravate it again. Strengthening his spinal erectors and stomach muscles to develop more core stability and strength. Possibly getting chiropractic treatment regularly.

In any event there's no reason to rush him. I'd be very, very patient with him and let him come along at his own pace. When he's 100% then we can look to work him in.

From what I read the past few days, it now appears to be a chronic issue. "It is a problem that my back is like this, so I will have to do exercises every day and be conscious that I have this type of back," Gallinari said. "I have to work on my muscles every day." That's too bad, I suspect that he has had this condition for sometime. I will take him at his word that he was unaware of it before July. It looks like his Milan team doctors failed him. What he said is more than troubling. I have serious doubts that he will be capable of holding up his back at a 82 game pace while playing at a high level. I am not sure if rest would be sufficent for a problem that he has. Hell people normally get worker's comp for these type of issues or retire. I would be interested in Q Rich's opinion on Gallinari's back and how the guy should approach playing with his back.

saw this over on rotoworld.com...
"Knicks rookie Danilo Gallinari might be ready to return to practice this week, as he recovers from a bulging disc in his back.
Gallinari has been cleared to do more extensive work, and did a lot of shooting drills and running during Tuesday's practice.

^ I'm surprised no one was interested in that, lol.

Obviously I understand the wait and see element to it, but it's at least great news that they are even thinking about letting him return to practice.

Yeah, it's hard to believe what's coming out of their mouths. We were told by them originally that he was only going to sit out the rest of SL and be ok.

very troubling quote

"I'm getting closer for sure, but it's so difficult to say [when I'll be back]," Gallinari said. "I wake up in the morning and we see how I'm feeling and see what I should do that day, so we're not thinking about next week or two weeks. The pain is at same level. It's not getting worse, not getting better. It's the same. I'm doing harder workouts every day and the pain is at the same level."

not getting better? sounds like surgery

If I'm correct that article was written by Berman, right? I can't take anything that the guy says seriously right now, he seems to spurned like a school-girl with the whole Marbury/Knicks scenario.

It's a quote though, a pretty long one at that.............. how can Berman color words coming out of the kids mouth????

This doesn't sound like good news at all.

It just seems odd since the day before yesterday there was a quote from Gallo saying he was going to start practicing next week. It's to really believe anyone is all I'm saying.

It is hard to believe. Berman has an axe to grind, but you also know the Knicks PR department is spinning it's wheels to down play this as much as possible.

So if came down to a guy reporting with a chip on his shoulder or getting the sun shine report from a guy with chips in pocket, I'd take Berman slant right now over the Alan propaganda IMO.

I think both quotes are consistent. Gallinari says its day to day and believes he will practice next week. However, he continues to reveal that the pain is not getting any worse but it isn't getting any better. Which goes back to Ken Berger's article saying that could a serious flag. The pain isn't going away and he is not doing anything really physical. That's serious because that could mean that it will get worse when he starts to take contact.

When a 19 year old is doing nothing but rehabbing for months (stretching, mild core exercises, whirlpools, massage, ice, ultrasound, etc,) and things aren't improving, it's a serious red flag.

I'm not saying the kid has no future in the league, but I think this season at least is gonna be a write off for him.

He needs surgery. Just because he's 19 people make it out like him having back surgery is horrible. Its actualy no big deal if he gets it, he's young and will heal completely. Don't get surgery and it will prolong the issue... just get some damn surgery kid!!!! Fix it quick! Lets not forget how horrible the Knicks medical staff is....

IMHO, he was damaged goods when he was drafted. Get the surgery and get ready for next year. This notion that he is going to play and still be in pain is insane. If it was too painful for him to play to this summer, training camp and the pre-season, how is it going to be ok for him to play in two weeks if his back feels the same way?? Strange story. Only on the Knicks with their medical history.

I think that's the problem with getting surgery. They will have to admitt he was damaged goods with no spin, ifs, buts or growing pains.

I think that's fair. Definitely a red flag for this season. I'm of the idea that I would be okay with him sitting for a year if it is going to heal him. No need for a rush. We need a few successful drafts to be good anyway. The hope is that the Knicks will make the right choices and avoid having this turn into a year after year nagging issue, or a career destroyer.
I just hope that people will like me

From everything I've read about disc problems surgery is a last resort. In most cases it's advised to do therapy and allow time for the body to heal. One of the reasons for lingering pain has to do with the nerves having been irritated for a prolonged period of time so that now they need time to heal even after the disc is no longer bulging.

I think they should not rush him, even if he misses this season.
