Okay, so what I caught of Huckabee's speech was pretty much filled with a list of unsubstantiated claims, as well as illogical and sophomoric statements that seem to show how disconnected their party (well, at least he) is from current realities.
1) He went on to say "I'm tied about hearing that Sarah Palin doesn't have experience! She got more votes in her town than Biden did when he ran for President!"
Huh? How does that fit logically at all? How does comparing the votes she got for mayor of her town versus Biden for President show her to be more "experienced." Keith Oberman on MSNBC corrected his claim by saying Biden got tens of thousands of votes, unless he means in her town, or something, but again, what does that have to do with "experience?"
2) Oberman also pointed a factual error about the claim that Abraham Lincoln started the Republican party.
3) Huckabee says that it's false to think all Republicans are from rich backgrounds, by trying to show his "blue collar" roots. Sorry dude, I dunno where this idea comes from but I've never heard that statement uttered before. It is widely known that the Republicans get plenty of support from working class (mostly white) folks in rural communities. But don't try to sell us on your "empathy" for the poor, when you also make statements to support this that are completely empty, like that non-Republicans are waiting for government handouts. More evidence of how the Reagan view of the reality of of the poor that somehow still exists for some is just complete illusion.
4) Then his "grand finale" was a big example of how out of touch he is with the realities of educational and child psychology literature, and borderline nuts, where he used an example of some teacher who took her students desks away before the first day of school, and wouldn't give it to them until she got the answer she "wanted." They asked her if it was to get good grades or to behave, and she said no. She was covered on the news (which sounded like he thought this was an overreaction), and then she eventually (I am sorry but I am still at a loss over this entire thing) had some military veterans bring them in and then said it was that they had to understand that they have the desks because they "gave" the desks to the children.
???
Sorry, but anyone who knows anything about child psychology and teaching understands that this is totally inappropriate on many levels. When children are "punished," of which neglecting them of something basic as a desk for school on the first day would qualify, it has to fit the behavior. What behavior, exactly, did these children do to justify this "lesson." Then on another level, as an administrator or parent, I would be infuriated over the need to "teach" my children about the importance of the military in this regard, as if they are the only reason we have "freedom." If she knew anything about the history and politics of the U.S. then she would also use the same trick to demonstrate other factors that contribute to the U.S. having a democracy, yet I somehow doubt that.
