I'll go on record saying that we will be a better team without Crawford for the rest of the season. Crawford is a nice kid but he's not a percentage player. If Isiah plays this right, we can play a lot tighter. Without Crawfords 15 crazy shots per game, we can take advantage of a more disciplined style.
1 - Start Curry at C, Frye at PF, Lee at SF, QRich at shooting guard and Marbury at Pg. 2nd unit: Francis, Nate, Balkman, Frye, James.
2 - Through all our deficiencies, we have 1 redeeming factor. We rebound the **** out of the ball. And the above lineups attempt to maximize that strength. With that sort of rebounding edge, its the absolute primary job of both units have to control the tempo - and that means slow the game down to a JVG standstill - 80 fga/team. Because of our usually inferior shooting, its better to minimize possessions and keep the game close. More importantly, we get high percentage possessions that utilize Curry, reduce fastbreak errors and don't expose our transition defense.
3 - Play Steph 30 mpg and have him finish the game. Give Francis the remainder of the PG minutes and have him isolate at the top of the key/play screen and roll with Frye on EVERY possession. Rotate Lee and Frye to PF and C when Francis, Nate and Balkman enter. Play both Frye and Lee big minutes (35+) when not in foul trouble.
4 - Look carefully at shot distribution. Curry needs 20 fga. Post Q up more. On broken plays, go to Marbury/Frye pick and pop.
You got some great ideas, Code. What I like about the big lineup of Curry, Frye, Lee is that theres still a ton of energy off the bench with Nate, Jeffries and Balk. Although you did mention Frye in both the Starting lineup and the bench lineup, I'm fairly certain you meant for him to be in with the starters though.
It's gonna be interesting to see what Isiah does but as I've said all along, Isiah is NOT good with game adjustments, this is a HUGE adjustment coming up, so we'll see what he can do.
Its seems like quite a few posters like the big lineup. Oohah definitely prefers it. And I agree thats its the best option. Initially, it seems like a "cut your losses" experiment and, to a large degree, it is. It is a defensive fiasco, with below-average perimeter defenders and even worse weakside help. And an offensive stalemate without a sufficient complement of shooters, from either mid-range or downtown, that remains dys-functional against the zone. We've been fortunate this year that other teams haven't exploited this repeatedly.
Rebounding allows us to stay in the game. We need to become a possession conservative team because we have neither the instinctive defenders nor the dead-eye shooters to compete in a freelance exhibition. That means guarding the 3-point line strictly, even at the expense of 2s. Eddy needs to be set up in the post and have the guard clear out to avoid potential turnovers and offensive fouls. Marbury is more effective with the help of a pick or a decoy pick. In other words, pre-meditated plays that depend on spacing and shot-clock management. The game has to be slowed down.
In our offensive scheme, Frye is the potential game changer. He can shoot. And on our team, thats unheard off. He's 6-11, which means he should be open. The problem is that Frye often ends up as a decoy because, in the course of any particular play, he's not in a reliable scoring position. Put him in the pick and roll. With Marbs and Francis. Have him set the pick INSIDE the 3 pt line on the defender's left side. Then roll to 15 feet - if the big stays with him, Marbury should have an uncontested 3 or a lay-up (or Curry should have a dunk). In the event of a switch, Frye needs to drag whatever smurf is guarding him inside the foul line, catch and shoot the 15 footer.
