Nady's played 45 career games at CF. Unless things go very poorly this year in NY, that's where I want him playing next season when Damon (LF, occasional DH) and Matsui (DH, occasional LF) are healthy. Melky can be the 4th outfielder, a role he's more suited for.

Nady in CF, never thought of that... good idea Bonn... he's definitely an upgrade offensively over the Melkman... if he can stick for the longterm & prove to be a good CFer then i have much less problems w/this trade.

Nady doesn't really have the range to play center much more so than in a pinch. McCutchen is a more advanced prospect than Kontos, though I would argue that Coke is more valuable than Karstens. Someone must've failed a physical.

Let's see how he hits. If he continues hitting .330 with a .900+ OPS, I'm sure that will make up for any limitations to his range in CF.

Does Jose Molina's Excellent Catching Compensate for His Poor Hitting?

I did some analyses and I think the answer is, yes, much more so than I realized. I'm probably gonna bore most of you with stats here, but he's caught 26 out of 54 runners, whereas the average catcher catches 30%, which would correspond to about 16 out of 54. I made the assumption that catching a player stealing (which usually erases either a single or a walk) helps the team about as much as getting a single does. And Molina has caught (i.e., erased) about 10 more singles than you'd expect an average catcher to out of 54 attempts. So I replaced ten of his outs at the plate with singles. Here are his current and "Bonn adjusted" offensive #s.

Current average: .217
Bonn adjusted average: .272
Current OPS: .549
Bonn adjusted OPS: .636

The OPS is still bad but you can definitely get away with .636 from a backup catcher. I was shocked to see that his ability to catch base stealers basically adds about 100 points to his OPS. I think Cashman was right that upgrading our production in the OF with Matsui out was a more pressing priority.

OK fair enough... i'm gonna take a wait & see approach to this one & just trust that Cashman made the right decision here... i seriously hope Tabata never turns out to be the goods... if this nets us positive results like the Chuck Knoblauch trade did for us then obviously i can't complain... or dare i hope for similar results like we got from the Tino/Nellie trade. ;)

moreso than his defense i think his real value to us this season has been his excellent pitch calling & framing of pitches... u can tell the pitching staff loves throwing to that guy cuz he fights to get the close calls on every pitch, & keeps guys honest on the basepaths to boot.

"The Giants could have a quiet run-up to the trade deadline. With Ray Durham gone, there has been little action on players such as Rich Aurilia, Jack Taschner and Tyler Walker, sources said.

There is a lot of noise emanating from New York about both teams' interest in Randy Winn and Bengie Molina. One source said the Mets and Giants have talked about Winn and the Yankees are scouting Molina now that Jorge Posada's shoulder injury has put his season in jeopardy.

However, the chances of Molina or Winn going to the Big Apple - or anywhere - are slim. General manager Brian Sabean repeatedly has said he does not want to move his right fielder or catcher because they are signed through next season.

The Giants believe if they have any hope of winning in 2009, it makes little sense to move their third- or fourth-place hitters (even if Molina, in a perfect world, would hit lower in the order with the addition of a power bat).

Sabean will listen to offers for Molina and Winn, but the Giants would have to win the deal. In other words, the Giants would have to receive, for openers, a young position player who could fill a glaring need. In the Giants' case, that is power. As Sabean said on his radio show Thursday, "I personally don't see those deals out there."

me neither... i don't mind trading Melky but not for Washburn... it would have to be a pure salary dump type deal or else i'd pass on that one.

& Gardner's actually been putting together some good atbats since he got called up & has hit several balls hard but right at some guys... he hasn't had much luck in getting his hits but i like his approach at the plate & i think he has a future on this team, if not as a starter than as a valuable bench player.

Excellent trade even with the new substitutions involved. Actually think it's an even better trade for us now - Danny McCutchen was a little higher than George Kontos on the totem pole as far as our prospects go but Kontos has similar stuff and is 3 yrs. younger. And I'd much rather keep Phil Coke over Jeff Karstens - Coke's a lefty who's really developing nicely at AA Trenton while anyone who's seen Jeff Karstens knows he's nothing special (he's another Darrell Rasner-type as far as I'm concerned - a 5th starter even in an average rotation). Losing Tabata is big - I was really looking forward to him replacing Abreu as our rightfielder and 3 hitter but who knows about the hand and now all of a sudden he looks like he's a problem with coaches and teammates. Plus, who knows if he'll ever be the power guy they'd want out of a full-time rightfielder. He'll be a 35-40 double guy but will he hit 30 HRs at the big league level? Who knows? He's the best piece we gave up and he's got some big question marks and is nowhere near a sure thing. Cashman's right though, you gotta give to get. We got a productive everyday OF in his prime that's having a phenomenal year and the best lefthanded reliever that was out there w/o giving up Austin Jackson, Jesus Montero or any of our top-tier pitching talent. Excellent job here by Cash.

other than the excellent trade part, i agree w/all ur sub-points Finestrg... i just find it curious how Tabata can go from an untouchable 1 season to an expendable commodity for role players the next... but again, nothing much left to do now but to trust in Cashman's judgement & hope for the best... hopefully X man can keep hitting the rest of the way.

If the playoffs started today (and assume for a minute we were in), I'd start Joba in game 1. I don't care about experience. He's simply much less hittable than Pettitte or Mussina.

Well we went from "we might not make the playoffs this year," and "it looks like it might be a rebuilding year" not too long ago to all of a sudden seriously thinking about taking this division and getting in the playoffs. Ponson, Sexson and now Nady & Marte are all excellent tweaks to an already potent group. I was just at a party a couple of weeks ago at my buddy Steve's house and had to listen to one of his friends (a Boston fan) go off on how the Yankees are done and how terrible a GM Cashman has been. I can't tell you how much I was laughing to myself while I was talking to this guy... I can't wait to talk to this dude again soon, now after the Red Sox have **** the bed in this series so far and 'the evil empire' looks ready to take this thing over.

i agree, i'd start Joba in game 1... that would make him available for the all important game 5 & game 7 in a relief role if necessary... i'd start Moose in games 2 & 6, Andy P in games 3 & 7, & Wang in game 4 (if he's back healthy by then).

Hey, any word on how Hughes has pitched. Did he make his first rehab start. Think the word was that he was supposed to go 2 innings... Meanwhile I read Kennedy came close to throwing a no-hitter and was hitting 91,92 on the gun. How do you think both of these guys factor in down the stretch?
