looks like the Yankees might be increasing their interest in acquiring Xavier Nady possibly in a package w/either Marte or Grabow.

That would be helpful, although it is noteworthy that Nady's never hit like this before in his career. Either Nady or Abreu would play CF? If they give up any prospects in the deal, it would mean this wasn't merely a transition year all along. I'd still be very happy about the deal though.

There is no way to justify the trading of the young pitchers when they passed on trading them for santana. It would be a tough sell to the fanbase and could seal Cashman's fate.

I found it more exciting when the team was a winning WSs, personally.

don't mind him... he thinks we should be winning a WS every 4 years w/no excuses, even though there's 29 other teams in baseball that will never come close to that level of success over any appreciable length of time no matter how much money they spend.

he's looked good... we have some other very promising arms in the minors like Melancon & JB Cox too... our bullpen is in great shape going forward, & Mariano is better than he ever was... i just hope Hughes & Kennedy live up to their hype, cuz our starting rotation will have major issues if both those kids turn out to be busts.

Source: Yankees likely to make trades and 'make a run'

BY MARK FEINSAND
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Tuesday, July 22nd 2008, 11:40 PM

With the trade deadline looming a week from Thursday, the Yankees' brain trust will gather Thursday in Tampa to discuss potential moves.

The meeting will include co-chairmen Hank and Hal Steinbrenner, president Randy Levine, general manager Brian Cashman, special adviser Gene Michael, pro scouting director Billy Eppler and senior VP Felix Lopez. Manager Joe Girardi isn't expected to be at the meeting, but he is expected to have some input.

A source with knowledge of the situation said that the Steinbrenner brothers have been pleased with the team's recent play, so they want to show the players that they are committed to winning this year by making moves to bolster the roster.

"They're ready to do whatever they need to do at the deadline," the source said. "They want to make a run this year."

During last week's All-Star break, the source said, Hal Steinbrenner instructed Cashman to make whatever moves were necessary before the deadline, even if it meant dealing some of the organization's highly touted prospects.

It is unlikely the Yankees would deal Phil Hughes, since the commissioner must approve any deal that includes a player on the disabled list and the team still believes he will be a top-level pitcher once he gets past his injury issues. Reliever Mark Melancon is the only true untouchable among the other prospects, leaving plenty of players up for grabs in the right deal.

The Yankees are focused on two areas: adding a righthanded bat and a starting pitcher, with several targets already on their radar.

Pittsburgh's Jason Bay and Xavier Nady are the top two outfield bats on the market. The Yankees have discussed starting pitchers such as Seattle's Jarrod Washburn, Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo and Toronto's A.J. Burnett.

The Bombers also are in the market for a lefthanded reliever, with Pittsburgh's Damaso Marte and Colorado's Brian Fuentes among the potential targets.

i would give up Ian Kennedy & a lower tier prospect to get Jason Bay if i could... would love to get AJ Burnett too but not sure how likely a deal w/in the division will be... i'd settle for Nady if we could get Marte in the deal as well, but not for Kennedy... maybe for a package of lower tier prospects... we should be able to get someone like Jared Washburn on the cheap but not sure how much of an upgrade he is over Ponson or Rasner... then there's Fredy Garcia who the Yankees are closely monitoring, & i'm also hearing Derek Lowe's name being brought up on other news sites, but the Dodgers need a bat in exchange & we don't have any to spare.

we may have to bring him back. he has re-defined himself as a pitcher. it's pretty darn impressive. he's the MVP of the team this year.

i think it's pretty much a given that he'll be back after pitching like this... he's changed his style completely & is now throwing that Greg Maddux-like 2 seamer that starts in on a lefty batter & then breaks over the plate that has really been effective for him... works both sides of the plate now & changing speeds really well.

same goes for Andy P, he's been so solid for us this year & i can easily see both of them being re-signed to an extension to pitch in the new stadium... combined w/Joba & Wang we're in great shape going into next season rotation wise, w/either Hughes, Rasner or maybe Ponson being the #5 starter (though i think Ponson will sign elsewhere after putting up an impressive season & the Yanks will likely want Hughes to get a spot in the rotation)... unless something crazy happens & they decide to trade CMW for a player & sign CC Sabathia or something along those lines, i think our rotation next year is gonna be pretty much what we have right now... i get the feeling Kennedy's about to be traded.

I was at the game Tuesday in that 8-2 win. I am now 2-0 at Yankee Stadium all time - both games I attended this season.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

anyone think Moose can get to 20 wins this year for the first time in his career?

i also think Jose Molina's pitch calling & ability to throw out runners on base has also played a huge role in the much improved ERA this pitching staff has put forth the past month or so.

Totally agree with you about Molina. I love this guy.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I think Moose has a real good shot at getting 20 wins this season, as crazy as that sounds. He's pitching so well though.

i just heard this on Mike & the Mad Dog so who knows if it has any legs, but apparently there's a rumor about a trade w/the M's that involves Kei Igawa & a low level prospect going to SEA for Jarrod Washburn & Jose Vidro.

that's an obvious no brainer for us (depending on who the prospect is but i can't believe it would be anyone of any real value)

Washburn is a HUGE upgrade over Kei Igawa... Vidro's washed up but he's just filler in this type of deal... u can just waive him, he's a FA after this season anyway... just unloading Igawa's contract would be worth the trouble IMO.

here's an article on the rumor:

http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/archives/144196.asp
Yankees talking to Mariners about Washburn, Vidro

The Mariners and the Yankees are talking about a deal that could see left-handed starter Jarrod Washburn and first baseman/DH Jose Vidro packaged to New York.

With the trade deadline a week from Thursday, the talks appear to still be preliminary. And it's far from a done deal, because the finances are tricky and Washburn has a no-trade clause where the Yankees are concerned.

Some wire reports say the Yankees want to move left-handed pitcher Kei Igawa Seattle's way, especially if Vidro is part of the deal.

Washburn has a career ERA of 2.56 against the Yankees, who are often vulnerable to left-handed pitching. And in his last eight starts he's been among the best pitchers in the American League with a 2.65 ERA although he's only 2-2 over that stretch because of terrible offensive support from his teammates.

Privately, the 33-year-old Washburn would welcome a deal that would get him to a contender, although it's not clear if the Yankees are his cup of tea. But having won a World Series in 2002 with Anaheim, he wants to do it again.

''Winning the World Series with the Angels was the greatest thing I've ever done in baseball,'' Washburn said recently. ''I'd like the chance sometime to get back to the Series.''

Here's how the money plays out: Washburn is due about $4 million for the rest of this year and just over $10 million in 2009, the final season of the four-year deal he signed with Seattle after leaving Anaheim. Igawa is under contract through 2011 and is owed about $14 million at approximately $4 million per season.

How is Washburn that much better than Rasner? I guess I'd do it to get rid of Igawa but Igawa is in the minors anyway and we're doing fine with the pitching we have. If anything we need a guy in the pen.

I agree with the first part. Our pen has been flawless, though. I'd look for a *real* upgrade at starting pitching and/or an outfielder who can hit better than Melky.
