I read that it's because the Knicks are receiving more salary than they sent out. That would hardcap them at the first apron. If they send out more salary than they receive, they can go up to the second apron. It seems like there should be a bunch of ways to do that- maybe the plan is to make a pick for Brooklyn sign, that guy and trade him, or add one of the backnenchers, or expand this deal to include another trade where the Knicks send out more salary. I think Bogs and Mikals contracts are only off by 2 million so it should be pretty easy to accomplish.
There's a way to read this that it gives the Knicks some insurance against OG leaving, which is a possibility. I can't shake that in his last (healthy) game against Philly, OG was on his way to 40 points. I think the Knicks pay whatever is needed to keep OG, even if he only plays 50-60 games a season.
They can max OG now if they have to. No way they let him leave. This team is set for contention.
We have some flexibility with iHart/Mitch. I think we might have seen something in OG’s ability to play rim protector / last line of defense in the playoffs. Small ball lineups with OG/Randle might be in the cards.
Mitch/Precious and a drafted C is probably sufficient. We could also trade for Brook Lopez or someone of that ilk. With such a dynamic 1-4 and we already have some good Cs in tow we aren’t desperate if iHart leaves.
However I don’t get the reporting on iHart or how this trade changes the landscape for his FA at all. I don’t see who throws him a massive offer.
Crazy we still have 5 firsts in next 3 drafts and while we trade away picks every other year, we still keep one every other year. This team is built to contend for a long time.
I did not think it would be possible to trade for Mikal without losing Randle. This team is absolutely stacked now.
