Memphis wanted DRose sign and trade him and Obi for Brooks.

No one in the league wanted the kid. I find it hard to believe all we could have got was two second rounders

KJ Martin, who also went for 2 seconds, wouldn't work because he becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season. Brooks makes no real sense for the roster now. He makes no real sense for the Rockets, but that's another discussion. We dulled Obi's value over the years and this is where it left things.

Yes and no. KJ martin Has been a better NBA player. Taken late in the second round he exceeds his draft position were Obi did not.
This is how it works. Draft positioning is a crap shoot but 2020 was different for many reasons.
Haliburton goes 12 in the draft. Not just knicks pass on him either. That draft was crazy because things shut down and players could not be in the gym that summer or work out properly for teams. The draft was in OCTOBER of 2020! It was not a very good one for most teams. Few go it right. Knicks did IQ.

They are both the least favorable amongst like 2-3 teams too. Kinda crappy trade

Leon could’ve used the free version of chatgbt to create a better trade scenario than this. When was the last time Knicks made a trade and didn’t get fleeced?

Overrated by Randle Haters Obi Toppin for two seconds AND cap space to sign Donte DiVincenzo. Not fleeced but people got to do their thing I guess. Of course our history with lottery picks speaks for itself. If that’s what people want to focus on what can you do.

I would have rather tried for Chris Duarte in an Obi deal as he is a shooter

Terrible draft
Terrible asset management
And horrible trade

Lots of lessons to learn from for Leon and camp

You’d put Duarte through the exact same process as Obi and make him like the 4th best SF/SG who gets <10 minutes a game?

When Obi started, he played like a starter. With very little PT, development. Would have liked to see Obi traded for another good, young, player, who also might need a change of scenery. Or in a deal for a star in his prime.

We see this so-so deal after Perry is gone. Hope its not a harbinger of things to come.

So basically another Kevin Knox for Cam Reddish type situation?
How did that work out?

Shedding a player that showed to be inadequate for cap flexibility and a couple of cost friendly assets was absolutely what Knicks needed to do. Unfortunately your view of how Obi performed was not shared by any other team in the NBA. If it would have been, we may have received a "good young player" or first rounder in exchange.

Terrible draft? True. But Obi was considered BPA.
Terrible asset management? Not really. Obi did not perform up to his draft selection. Was going to be up for a larger financial commitment. Knicks did not feel he was worth that..
Terrible trade? We essentially traded Obi for two seconds and Donte. Not bad.

Blaming a FO for a player not playing up to his draft position is easy if done in retrospect. But isn't the players fault for not living up to the pick?

We can go back and forth all day but the facts are clear. We drafted Obi #8. And like a new car driven off the lot, his stock fell. It’s not Obi fault we picked him #8. That’s what scouts are for. And from a fans perspective, when he got mins he produced. But if you only getting limited mins behind Randle, what else can he do. If RJ only got limited mins he would look like a bum. Some players can shine with limited mins and others can’t.

I’m looking forward to Obi shinning in Indy. I hope he uses this as motivation and shines. We all trying to eat and Obi needs mins to show his value for a new contract.

I wish him nothing but success in im his new chapter.

Wouldn't want that to happen but you're probably right aboutw what would end up happening...just think Duarte as a high pick has unknown potential since he never really played significant minutes for Indy. He could be a bust but I'd prefer to roll the dice with his potential vs 2 low second rounders.

Well, the two picks amount to essentially the proverbial sack of potatoes. At such a return, I wonder if the Knicks would have been better off just keeping him and risking losing him for nothing next year. Given the low interest for trading real assets for him, I doubt people would bid hard for him in the FA market either.
And even if one writes him off as a star or even a starter in the NBA, it is hard to dispute that he was valuable to the Knicks. His ability to run the floor and get easy buckets in transition literally kept the Knicks in the game on many occasions. He also started to become a legit perimeter threat, often making timely 3 point buckets. Why give him up for essentially nothing when we didn't have to? Do we really need his roster spot? Did his agent present the FO with an ultimatum for Obi to be traded somewhere where he would get more playing time? Or is our FO plain dumb?

Leona son is Obi's agent. Getting Obi paid is a financial motive for the Rose family.
