I watched it for the first time and checking it out after what happened this weekend explained a lot to me. Dude is just a spoiled, pampered kid who never had to struggled for anything in his life. Everything was about Ben Simmons. Some of the issues he's dealing with now he showed signs of this at LSU. Ben Simmons is an extremely talented basketball player but he's pretty shallow between the ears and behind the rib cage. With his personality and mindset, I'm not even sure a team can win big with him as their #3 guy. I think Simmons would thrive playing for a losing team like Sacramento where nobody cares and he would be free to focus on boosting his brand as a player without much pressure to win.
Good point and perhaps if it rests on his shoulders and “His team”, he has to learn to carry that weight.
But, at the end of the day he’ll soon be worth 100mm and if a money plan is in place he will have succeeded greatly in the game of life. Russ Westbrook will tell you a chip does not define his greatness. He has a point. Pampered and Spoiled yet can still play at the top 1% in the world at his profession as an allstar.
But no doubt he is not playing to his ability.
Unlikely they trade him until he s “fixed”. HE needs a mentor and the maturity to get it done. If his reputation is that of not working hard that will bleed out.
No doubt, he's obviously won at life and he probably could care less about getting to the next level. #1 pick, all-star, will make well over $200M over the course of his career. If he never gets any better than he is now, life is REALLY good for him.But when you think about it in hindsight, should anything that is happening to Simmons be a surprise? College hoops is the one sport where one guy can carry a squad to greatness. When Simmons arrived at LSU they went from a 22 win team that made the NCAAs to a 19 win team that missed the tournament and got blown out by 33 points in the 2nd round of the SEC tournament. There was criticism back then about him not wanting to take the big shot or take over in crunch time. Dude mentally checked during the 2nd semester at LSU, letting his team down while focusing on the NBA draft. He is just a guy who everything came relatively easy for him in life (according to his own brother) and I just don't think he has the fortitude to deal with difficult times. Who knows, maybe there a switch inside of him that someone can turn on and things can change, but I doubt it. Like you said, doing what he's doing he still better than 99% of the players in the league, so he's good with that. It's the fans who probably need to adjust their expectations of him.
And I will also say this, it's the players who don't win chips who are always the ones who say it's not that important...until they win one.
ITs a tough business when you get that contract and accept the responsibility of it. To not live up to it is a burden and its shown in thru the public eye. Fans and writers will spew venom his way because of it. Bill Buckner comes to mind. Sports business can be cruel. Look at many of us taking in third party writing and then forming opinion like we know the dude.
Ok, its his to own and fix. I’m sure he is well aware by now of his shortfalls and perhaps now work harder. For these guys its getting to the NBA, getting the contract, getting to be allstar. He did this. Now he has to go further. I’ll root for his ascension if he does it. we all love a comeback story!
Thoughts to IsoZoe Trier who was on that trajectory of a one and done and it did not formulate. Injury, Attitude and time went against him. Dennis Smith Injury in High school might have knocked his off. He had a nice short sample in College but the next level was a big leap. This happens a lot in the world of basketball. Difference with these guys and Simmons is height. Ben is 6-10. The others 6-3. Size matters when your a guard.
Ben Rookie year went to hell and he lost time. Covid cost him time. some players went thru it, others stagnated. What’s with these LSU divas? Anthony Randolph then this guy?
The process for all its worth really burned thru a lot of picks and while Philly has finished with the best record in the east somehow feels like a failure. Them and Boston seemed destined for a long successful run. Toronto finally prevailed on a. Ballsy trade by Ujiri and they did just sneak past Philly. GSW dual injuries paved the opportunity otherwise no miracle in Toronto.
Winning is not easy. Even our season ended in disappointment by many yet it was really widely successful in the big picture. We raise expectations to the point its not attainable?
We’ll see!
Most likely Simmons gets a summer to get his shyt right. That contract is a bear to move. They bought in Doc Rivers for a reason and last summer there was not time due to covid restrictions to really work his mentor ship. Doc has his own game 7 issues but perhaps thats another story.
Biggest change is Morey is now running the team. Anything is possible. For all we know ownership might grant him license to blow it up. Not tank it mind you, just do his thing. He did a masterful job in Houston over a long stretch where they were more relevant than I thought they could be on paper. When new owner Fertitta likely made him get Westbrook thats when he knew it was time to move on. New owners like their own thing.
