What do you mean let him off the hook? Phil is trying to do his job. If the Knicks are going to move forward now they need to rebuild and Melo is a roadblock there. What else can Phil do but put added pressure on him to leave now?

Would it make you happy if Phil just held a press conference, break downs, cries and says there's nothing to do because he made some bad moves over his first couple seasons?

Except Phil made Melo untradeable. He has ntc, a huge contract, a trade kicker for 9 mil and he is old. Phil gave him all of that. Do you think he waives the trade kicker after Phil's presser? Depending on the receiving team in a trade's cap situation he might be able to waive some or all of his trade kicker but I don't think he is giving up money to help Phil. When Phil signed Melo it wasn't like he was just putting eyes on Melo. He was a 10+ year vet and there was no sign that he was changing his style of play.

The NTC was probably necessary to get the deal done. The contract is big but there's worse players getting paid more. Melo is still an all star every season and he doesn't break 30 mil right?

If you 'punish' a player with a negotiated NTC because they won't waive it I would think you would be in big trouble with the league. Maybe it would be enough for Silver to step in and force Dolan to hire someone more competent as an executive.

Part of the reason Melo would be sitting is because his playstyle is not conducive to what the Knicks are trying to achieve culture wise. Melo has been resisting the triangle since day 1. That would be reason to sit him in which case Silver would have nothing to say.

Melo needs to realize he has very little leverage in reality at this point.

Why didn't fans complain about Melo resisting last year?

I'm a fan and this past season has been the breaking point for me personally. I'm done with him and I concur with the poster above- Melo does not dictate how the team is run. That is for the coach and management. They need to be able to change the direction of the team if need be. Things didn't work out how either side planned these past 2 years. Both sides need to move on. Unfortunately for Melo, if he's not willing to the Knicks can sit him. The Knicks aren't in win now mode. It's not ideal for either party but this might be what it comes down to because he also won't aid in team development by playing through the triangle and passing the ball.

Phil either took the job knowing that he had to give Melo the biggest contract in the world (plus the ntc, trade kicker) or he didn't even think to ask Dolan about this beforehand. Neither possibility lets him off the hook. He and Dolan reportedly had been talking for a long time. He should have insisted that Dolan either hire him well before the trade deadline so he could explore trades or not hire him at all.

You have hindsight, have to go back into winter of 2014 and freeze the things at the time that were known.

Nothing I'm saying now about any of Phil's decisions is different than what I said with foresight when they were playing out.
