Im not a fan of this player very much but this is nice buy low value. I know he was very solid with Melo and he defends very well so there is little to no downside here. We dont have much veteran stability there. I like Jose to bounce back but this is a nice balancing move. Having another defender on the perimeter makes signing Monroe a better fit as well. Hopefully Affie can get back to where he was. With the cap exploding hopefully we can capitalize on a few guys like this really getting motivated to play at a high level while we continue to build up the pipeline...

This is a good move. This player will help. Very little downside, plenty of up

Afflalo plays defense so i can't compare him to JR.

Exactly. He is much better. Tired of hearing how athletic Smith is based off a few hot shooting streaks amid his generally crappy play. Knew he would screw the Cavs. This is a major upgrade from Smith, Hardaway and Shumpert and at a great price. Jackson is looking smarter day by day. I give this sign a big A.

The fact he can defend is a huge bonus. There is nothing not to like about this signing. At $8mil it is a steal with HUGE upside and very low risk

definitely not a terrible signing but you are a bit too giddy. Its like he is your new shumpert.

Yesterday I was being negative and today I'm being giddy. I take things at face value and try to be honest&realistic. I try not to post with an agenda.

I am legitimately thrilled with this signing. The fact that I wanted Affalo and we got him is comforting to me because Phil even though he hasn't been perfect looks at players the same way I do. Same way I felt after he drafted KP @4 with the potential that he may have the 1st or 2nd highest ceiling in this draft. It's comforting to me that he ingnored Knicks fans calls for Mudiay, Winslow & Stein. I like the way Phil sees the whole picture

wow I am happy about this trade. Excellent value and leave room for the team to add FA.

Well done Afflalo and welcome to NY.

Unless Calderon is traded or cut, I think the Afflalo move may mean the end for Shved. 5 Guards ? That would be too many. Grant is expected to play, as is Gallo. AA is a 35 mpg guy, so there is really only room for one more rotation guard.

Cutting Calderon and signing Shved is a neutral cap wise, so I doubt that will happen.

Phil likes experience. Calderon and AA will start with the G Team coming off the bench, is my guess.

I feel good about Afflalo's ability to bounce back this year. I think he'll be motivated to have a great season. He and Melo already have chemistry and that is a plus for a quicker bond. He was a leader in Orlando and has that kind of strong mentality. He won't be scared of the situation.

this move is ok.

the draft was the best I could have hoped for.

so sad that as fans we are so desperate for anything positive. Remember how excited we got with Sean Williams and Jonathan Bender? Pity that it had to come to this.

so here is what phil is thinking ....

Yup and Monroe is an excellent passer. Hopefully He and Melo can get the ball to Affalo from the post when he is open behind he arc

We can use 3pt specialist of the bench. Svhed is a little redundant now since he can't shoot. I would love to see Novak lighting up the Garden again in a Paxson/Kerr/Horry role. And we need some Oakley, Horace Grant type enforces

This is a very good signing. Very reasonable contract and he is your prototypical triangle guard in the mold of of Ron Harper.

Who are we trading to the Bucks for him, in December?

It makes us better.

I think he had a ankle injury last year ... Great signing and a movable contract for the trade deadline .. Afflalo isn't my first choice but who knows we might still go after another shooting guard or just fill up our space with what we need and go over the cap to sign Shved as our back up

Great point

newyorker4ever wrote:A couple ways we can go with the around 20 million we have left.
We can just use it on LMA or D.Jordan and call it a day.
We can sign Monroe and still have another 4/5 million left for another good player.
We can stretch/trade Calderon and have enough to give a 14/15 million offer to T.Harris and then sign Rolo to play the 5.
We have options that could really put us on a path to the playoffs next season.
Using the stretch provision on Calderon can be very much helpful now and if we could trade him then we could sign both LMA and Rolo which would be the best option out there. Could you guys imagine if we ended up with Afflalo, LMA and Rolo?

Usually when we look at moves we are only looking at best case scenario like hoping that Affalo goes back to being an 18pt scorer. BlThe beauty of this signing is that even if he declines and turns into garbage the down side is minimal. Need to continue this trend of focusing on minimizing and managing the downside rather then always hoping for the best case scenario.

that is true. We need to be able to absorb a playing failing. So many players today get hurt and its crazy to need to rely on one or two guys.

It's not that the Knicks didn't get open looks even when Melo went down our offense ran properly and players got the looks. They just didn't knock them down.
I think our players will be able to get open in this offense. It is after all a motion offense and so it's really on the player to make the cuts well and they'll get open looks. The guys we had weren't always consistent making shots. When they hit shots the team was competitive.

Also, why are his assist number so low? Averaging 2 assists per game at guard is really bad.

You're one of those people that wouldn't be happy no matter what we did. You'll find the bad in whatever move we make. We got a starting SG that plays both ends of the court for 8 million a year with just a two year contract with a player option on the 2nd. That's a good contract on a good player so be at least a little happy.

No way. Mreinman has listed plenty of players he was interested in and has given specific details. He also started an optimistic thread about Porzingis. You're just way off here.

well thanks bonn!

this was a fun thread to revisit. Always good to look back and see where you stood and why. If you don't then how would you have any idea if your predictions makes any logical / statistical sense?

Gut? Gut guys are no longer employed (well most of them anyway).

Afflalo has been a disappointment. He was brought here to be Robin. Fisher featured him. He's had all the opportunity in the world to succeed. I hope he leaves. I would prefer to have a guy like Marcus Thornton or Eric Gordon take his spot.
