other teams can/will make poor choices on contracts, which doesnt mean the knicks should as well.

maybe he will outplay his contract... hes entering his 10th season, i dont expect to see much different from the guy though.

GO TEAM VENTURE!!!!!

Looks like JR got fair market value when you look at the other deals being made:

JJ Redick 4 yrs, 27 mil
Kevin Martin 4 yrs, 28 mil
Tarik Evans 4 yrs, 44 mil
Kyle Korver 4 yrs, 24 mil

JR, had a much better season than each of the above mentioned players. OJ Mayo, I'm sure is going to receive a similar 4 yr deal aswell....

I dont either but as in Lin's case it's the market that sets the price. I am being told other teams were willing to offer him similar money - havent seen any real reports stating an offer though.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

I like this quote from him:

“I want to retire a Knick,” Smith said. “I don’t want to go anywhere else. I love it. I love my teammates. I love my coaches. I was sitting in the locker room looking at my jersey after the game just knowing I don’t want to be anywhere else except for in the orange and blue.”

Even though he is a knucklehead at times, if he can pull his stuff together, he is a great talent. Not a huge if at his salary.

He is signed - http://blog.northjersey.com/knicks/290/j-r-smith-agrees-to-4-year-deal-with-knicks/

So 10yrs in the league because he said some sentimental things about the team he gets more rope? I remember Chandler and Gallo hated the idea of being traded to Denver, only wanted to play in the Orange and Blue. 3-4yr developing players with no off court issues.... fans told them to suck it up, go kick rocks, get to steppin.

I'm not waiting on Smith to do anything other than continuing to be paid by our organization a handsome contract.

For the record I agree Smith got fair market value I mentioned this after to Korver deal I believe. I expected Smith to be back because of his relationship with Woody. Financially this was not the best decision for this franchise going forward though.

I'm fine with this signing. For the money, he's a productive player. If only the Knicks got as much for every other dollar spent. I'm really hoping STAT can come back and contribute this year, because his $20M down the drain is really crippling this franchise. Chandler better man up, too.

JR's is not a MoShandonEisleySpoon contract.

This team looks better this year than it did last summer entering the season. Pnecil JR in for 14-18 pts per, 5rbs, and 4ast. Those numbers are better than what Mayo has been putting up. Dont forget, JR was a really good defender for us, and was probably our best rebounder down the stretch of the season. He carried us for stretches last season, had a couple of game winners and is an underrated passer. Yes, he’ll take his share or bone-head-shots but that’s what makes him a 6th man and why he gets 6 mil per and not 10mil per.

JR was playing for a contract lats year and you can tell that during the regular season. However like the old saying goes a leopard never changes his spots and sure enough he reverted back to his old ways in the playoffs. he probably cost himself much mroe money. I can live with a 2 year deal but not 4 tahts crazy

People seem to now want to tank the next two years just to clear cap space so sign magical free agents. We tried that last time and ended up with Amar'es broken knees, and almost Joe Johnson after failing miserably to land anyone we actually wanted. Fed up of the defeatist attitude, constant wanting to give up and the fantasies that everything will work out great with no salaries and picks- it's just as risky as any other method.

Well to be fair the Knicks have done it both ways the past 13 years and it hasnt exactly worked out either way lol. In 13 years we had one very good regular season and one playoff series win to a broken down celtic team

If the idea is that JR was playing for a contract, then why in the world would he kill that with a slump on the biggest stage in the playoffs? I just think it was one of those things. It happened to DWade who had bad performances and Manu also had some pretty awful performances. It happens to the best of them. The thing is to have a team that can survive a poor performance from one of it's key players. Hopefully the improvements to the team this year will help keep that from happening again.

Its not like we dont want JR Smith to do well. The reason why some of us are mad was because he kept his head straight most of the season and then in the most important part of the year he went back to being a knucklehead. I can understand having a tough few games as long as there is effort. JR stupidly got suspended and then he went out and partied. Its tough to forgive a player for that especially when you are a win now team

I agree with you and the fact he got rewarded for that crap isn't a good thing! I fully expect him to coast the next 3 years with him and Melo smiling and laughing everytime the Knicks get blown out! He may come to play the 4th year!
