My sentiments exactly. I posted this earlier as well, I think Foelds is a much better overall value than JR. I am not sure about Wilson's contract situation but really would have liked to see us go after him. Perhaps it's just for this year then we let JR walk and cut Balkman to pursue Wilson.

Knicks have no chance at Wilson if they want to sign Lin. Lin should be eating up a portion of the MLE if not all.

I know there have been several articles explaining that the Knicks can secure bringing Lin back no problem. However, last one I read, I thought it was explaining that since Lin was picked up on waivers twice, his early bird rights transferred and he's simply a RFA, and that our MLE will be untouched on matching offers?

I apologize if this has been beaten to death already.

I think Billy Walker would be the one most affected.

Huh? Really?? But i thought Billy Walker had a better 3pt shooting %. Why exactly do we need JR Smith again?

I think he needs us more than we need him.

Ah well, if JR is a done deal, better him come now while we still have the room for him. Afraid Novak's minutes will start disappearing though.

At least come playoff time, our backcourt won't look too shabby.

I get that feeling too. Fields is not a lock to finish his career as a Knick especially with Shump in the fold

Lin can't make more than the mle because he was cut and is not a bird guy. That means we offer him the full MLE and he is ours if he chooses to sign. We will then own his bird rights and can offer him a max contract in the future.

I don't think he hurts Field's or Shumps' development. Maybe some playing time, but we have numerous back to back games. Next week we play Sun-Mon; off Tues then Atl on Wed and The Heat Thurs. I'd love another fresh body/veteran/good player to be ready for the back to back Atl and Miami games.

We are positioning for a championship run. Signing JR strengthens us.

Can somebody confirm this please?

From Tommy D

A source who has been familiar with the J.R. Smith free agent situation has confirmed a Daily News report that a contract to bring the shooting guard to the Big Apple is “about done.”

Smith’s agent, Leon Rose, met with Garden Chairman James Dolanfollowing Wednesday’s Knicks’ win over Sacramento to finalize a contract. It is believed that Smith, who has also attracted the interest of the Clippers, will receive the Knicks’ $2.5 million exception. Rose also represents Anthony, who has lobbied the club to add Smith, an explosive scorer who can also be erratic at times. He has averaged 12.5 points per game over seven NBA seasons.

What I read last is we will still own his Bitd Rights. Houston owned OT when they picked him up, then we got when Houston waived him. This has been very confusing to follow.

After seeing the second unit struggle to score last night people still don't want JR? We got lucky that the Kings suck. If this happened against the Heat or Bulls whatever lead we had would have disappeared. JR gives us our only shooter in the backcourt for when teams use zone against us. Let's not forget that he can also drive to the hoop. His ability to drive to the hope makes him valuable by itself. Our second unit could not get to the hoop against the bad defense of the Kings.

That is the key. When Lin went to the bench lastnight we became a jump shooting team again which works when jeffries and walker are hitting their shots but that is rare. JR will create offense off the bench

rvwink wrote:"What does Landry Fields provide that JR Smith doesnt? Please dont say defense either."

Here are 10 things that Landry does better than JR Smith

1) He is much much cheaper. (This is very important on a team that has 3 very highly paid players.)
2) His efficiency last year was +12.30 versus Smiths +5.2
3) He has more upside as this is only his second year and Smith is into his 8th year, i.e. he is close to 30.
4) His career shooting percentage was .493 versus .428 for Smith.
5) He rebounds much better (5.8 career vs 2.89)
6) Better career average in assists 2.2 versus 2.0)
7) Steals (1.1 vs .9)
8) More unselfish
9) Better relationship with the team's point guard
10)Guard J.R. Smith is a loser. Trust him? No way. Any NBA team truly serious about winning a championship cannot have Smith on the court, the bench or the team bus. So what is Denver going to do about Smith, with the trade deadline looming in February? Absolutely nothing. It would be a dream scenario if the Nuggets could somehow trade Smith, his $6.1 million salary, tantalizing athletic potential and forever childish attitude for a reliable big man. Vs Fields who is a great team mate.

Is 10 enough?

#3 is wrong he is more like 26 if thise numbers are wrong how do I know you did not make the other stuff up? LOL.

I do not know why everyone is focusing on Fields when it is Walker and Bibby minutes that he will be cutting into. The guy is a Iman Shumpert with less defensive skills but with a better offensive game in probably every area. Also it allows another shooter on the floor to close out the 1st and 3rd quarter with Melo. I hope they have Novak at the 4 to close out the quarters too because that means that teams can not double Melo. The only problem with that is that you can not run the PnR unless you use Jeffries. However, they could keep Novak but move him to 3 and have Melo at the floor with Smith or Shumpert handling the PnR.

Smith just creates so many ptions with the second unit because he can actually handle the ball unlike Bibby and Walker.

Thanks Markji

Hmmm not sure this is so accurate anymore. This story seems to confirm what I believed was actually the case.
