Gallo won't have the scoring opportunities to be an allstar playing with Amare, Melo & Billups IMO... he'd be playing more of a supplementary role... Fields has already shown he can be highly effective w/o having any types of plays called for him... Gallo tends to disappear if he's not contributing on the offensive end.

agree on all points but still think gallo is unique talent and if can avoid trading wouldnt even if i use him in another trade one day for someone else.......

that's true too... i don't think any of our guys are untouchable other than Amare at this point, they all have value & can be used as assets to upgrade in other areas... the key is in figuring out a "fair" offer of assets to get a player of Melo's talent, i think the offer being discussed in this article is pretty fair under the circumstances... we can't expect to get Melo for a package of Wilson, Curry & AR, that's just not gonna happen... & signing him in free agency is not a given either... the Knicks would be taking just as big of a risk waiting it out til the summer as the Nuggets would be if they can't get a deal done at the deadline.

Donnie has played this right so far, let's just hope he doesn't screw it up because he's too scared to part with untouchables like Timo Mozgov

Honestly, my biggest concern is MDA. I'm concerend that MDA feels a certain comfort level with this group because most of them fit into his spread the floor, open the middle and chuck 3's style of play. Regardless of wins and losses, I think MDA might be married to certain players (Gallo?) and he may use the trade rumors as a way to excuse the bad play of late when really we are just not that talented. I'm hopeful that Walsh will listen but ultimately will do his job (as a GM) and get Melo because its the right move regardless of what MDA has to say.

i'm more worried about Dolan getting too deeply involved cuz if we end up gutting our roster to get Melo then it will no doubt be because he stuck his nose into it & caved... i think DW is not a fool, he's gonna try & get Melo but play this out to the 11th hour & see if he can get Denver to cave a bit on their end... & i think MDA would be an absolute fool to not want Melo on his team especially w/the way the team struggles whenever Amare is off the floor... i agree tho i think he's married to certain guys... if we end up losing Melo because we were too afraid to include Gallo in a potential package, then i think that's inexcusable.

I rather keep fields out of the 3. Wilson is a gone no matter what happens. Can't sign melo with him here. Gallo is not a great shooter and way to inconsistant. I love how he gets to the FT line, but he can not play with another SF. I can count the amount of times Gallo and Chandler both had good games on the same night with one hand. Fields may have some low scoring nights, but that is because we run no plays for him at all. You are also not going to find another player who can grab that amount of rebounds as a SG. Add his hustle and smarts and I think he is a keeper.

I'd rather keep Fields aswell, but neither Fields or Gallo shoulc hold up this deal. These guys are replacebale whereas getting an opportunity to get a guy like Melo does not come along very often.

i would like to think that also but if you believe the article it doesn't seem like the Knicks are willing to negotiate in good faith if they're balking on that offer... could be that DW is just trying to get DEN to come down a bit on their demands & Dolan might overrule him at the 11th hour... IMO if we can get Melo on that package i think it's worth our while (assuming the "third starter" being talked about is either Mozgov, Wilson or Fields)

The Nuggets, according to a source, are asking for three starters - including Danilo Gallinari and Raymond Felton - plus Eddy Curry's expiring contract and at least one first-round pick. In that proposed deal, Anthony and veteran point guard Chauncey Billups would be coming to the Knicks.

It is believed that Walsh and Mike D'Antoni feel the team would be giving up too much. Garden chairman James Dolan has had direct involvement in the negotiations and may ultimately overrule his basketball staff.

The teams have nine days to play their game of chicken and the Knicks continue to debate if they should trade for Anthony now or take their chances on signing him as a free agent this summer.

Anthony has made it known that New York is his top choice. If the Knicks and Denver can't agree to a deal, that could open the door for another team to acquire him. Even if Anthony becomes a free agent, the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement could potentially make it easier for Denver to retain its franchise player.

The Nuggets are focusing on two teams - the Knicks and Chicago Bulls - because Anthony is willing to sign a contract extension with those clubs. Houston and Dallas remain outside possibilities while the Nets are the wild card."

you're giving up 3 starters but you're getting back 2, 1 of whom is probably the best pure scorer in the NBA... i don't see what the hold up is... even if there are no other suitors, we're in no way guaranteed that Melo will sign here in free agency this summer... i personally think it would be unwise to take that risk... gonna be a tense 9 days.

What would Melo, Billups and Amare's Salaries be the next two years?

I was already having problems figuring out how we going to fill in around Melo and Amare but it's worse if we pick up Billups at 13 million.

No draft picks, no cap space, no size, no defense. A "big" three that's far inferior to what they have in Miami.

We have to be able to make a better trade then that.

The Price Isn't Too High - Make the Trade, Knicks

By Joe Caporoso - Contributor

The Knicks need to start building their own big three, right now

Feb 15, 2011 - As SB Nation has been covering today, the New York Knicks have the ability to obtain Carmelo Anthony for Raymond Felton, Danillo Gallinari, another starter (likely Wilson Chandler), Eddy Curry's expiring contract (is that his full name now?), and a first round pick in return for Anthony and Chauncey Billups.

The initial reaction of many has been that the price is too steep and the Knicks should walk away from the offer. However, the more you watch this team hover around .500 and the more you realize they are only four games away from not even being a playoff team in the East, the more you need to get on board with this deal.

Yes, Raymond Felton got off to a very strong start but there is no arguing his play has declined in the previous the month, which has concincided with the Knicks being a 5-10 team in that period. Gallinari is young and has plenty of potential but believe it not, you have to give up something to get somebody like Carmelo Anthony on your team. Wilson Chandler would likely be the third piece in the deal and that is fine because you have to part with his fragile self before you let Landry Fields go anywhere.

The approach of waiting until free agency is starting to seem like a crap-shoot, with Anthony now entertaining the thought of signing an extension in Denver. There is also a chance another team, Chicago, Dallas, or Houston jumps in at the last hour before the trade deadline and spends the next few months getting Anthony to pen a long term deal.

If you are the Knicks, you take Billups for the rest of the season, put Anthony with Amare Stoudemaire, Landry Fields, and your collection of bench players (Shawne Williams, Bill Walker, Ronny Turiaf, Toney Douglas) and hope to make some noise in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The younger players will gain some worthy experience, while Anthony and Stoudemaire can get used to playing together in a big spot. After the season, you buyout Billups for 4 million dollars instead of paying his ridiculous 2011 salary and play the waiting game for Chris Paul or Deron Williams who should be counting the seconds until they could join Anthony and Stoudemaire.

If this team ever wants to win a title in a conference shared with the Celtics, Heat, Magic, and Bulls...it is going to take more than what they have now, way more. Raymond Felton is a nice player, but long term it is going to take a big three of Stoudemaire, Anthony, and Paul or Williams supported by an ideal role player like Fields and a young bench that hopefully develops to knock off any of those powers.

I concur! In the end, none of the guys we give up are irreplaceable. We'll still have enough on this roster to win games. I think you have to put your core together 1st and worry about everything else later. You start with two elite players and you really have something. We all know the surest way to contention is 2 Elites. Heck we see the difference one Elite has made to our team. Just imagine the boost we'd get from another one?

IMO This team can survive just fine minus Gallo and Chan in exchange for Melo. Billups, STAT, Melo, Fields and perhaps Barron, is a solid lineup. Heck i'd slide Rautins in their and let TD be the scorer that he is and he's your 6th man for now. It's how TD helps us best right now anyway. Let him be a SG. Williams and Walker are excellent 3pt shooters to fill that role and I don't see a drop off at all. We likely won't be any worse defensively, since we don't defend much now. But what would change is that we could likely win the Offensive efficiency battle and that's huge. We go thru scoring slumps and poor offense way too much and that would change with another Elite scorer. DO THE DEAL! WE WON'T REGRET IT!

So you make this trade and you're still a superstar and a defense away from being a contender. Sound like a plan.

Waiting and hoping our young starters go from .500 to championship team is not a good plan either.

Billups can be bought out for $4M after this season, or u can keep him for his $14M team option... Melo & Amare would combine for about $37M next season... that would leave you about $20M to fill the rest of your roster spots with depending on what the new CBA entails if you buy Billups out (unless his buyout figure counts against the cap?), or $6M if you excercised his option, which is probably an unlikely scenario.

this is why it makes a lot more sense to hold onto Fields because of his low salary figure for next season relative to his production & position he plays... if u unload Gallo & Wilson's salary off the books you have still enough flexibility to target an upgrade at the C position

Fields, Turiaf, AR, Mozgov, Walker or Williams, Rautins & Douglas will add up to around $13M next season... that leaves you with about $7M to play with in free agency to fill the 2 or 3 other roster spots, perhaps to sign a stopgap PG & another bigman... w/Melo & Amare on the roster we become a much more attractive option for other FA's to play with, so maybe we'll be able to sign guys at less than their market value.

So you make this trade and you're still a superstar and a defense away from being a contender. Sound like a plan.

as opposed to your plan which is to develop Gallo & Wilson into the superstars we need to take us to the title?

No. Trade for Melo at a more reasonable price. If you can't do that then be a little more patient and see how things develop. Then you still have the option of trying to sign Howard.

Add Howard to most of what we have now and the Knicks are contenders.

If you sign Melo and give up the Farm you still need another superstar and may not even be able to do it under the new CBA.

Sure, Gut The Team And Throw In Landry Fields While You're At It
