does Carmelo play defense for even 1 quarter?

Danillo Gallinari has avg 22.5 pts 4 reb 2 assists shooting 53% the last 2 games (all star level numbers)
Will Chandler has avg 17.5 points 11 rebounds 2 assists 2 steal 1 block shooting 47%(Sean Marion type numbers)
These guys are 22 and 23--they are 3 years away from their prime but both are legit 20 point guys now.

Fields was a let down the last 2 games and Felton had a terrible game yesterday. He needs a blow--he cant keep this up playing so many minutes and we cant put all that pressure on amare in the post. we play 1 big.

LOL, so we should forget about everything Gallo's done throughout the season in favor of 2 games that happen to be some of his best? The guy disappeared in the 2nd half of the last game when we needed him most. He has yet to shown a propensity to take over a game and likely never will because he is a complimentary piece and not an actual foundation piece ala Carmelo Anthony.

every coach has his style of players that he prefers... MDA is no different... JVG wanted to stick w/the guys he trusted & that he had gone to war with in the past & succeeded with... that doesn't make him a bad source to consult to determine the types of players that can help a franchise.

If we got Melo the Knicks should make a serious effort to get Steve Nash for a short term title run. Felton is doing well for the most part but Nash would know how to get the most out of Stat and Melo and do it within the flow of the offense. It would realistically be Nash's last chance for a ring and he would have the incentive of playing with two all-stars.

Trio of Duncan, Parker and Obi won Ginobli.

Neither is super "athletic".

What is the glue of that team? Duncan passes out. Now does Amare.

Parker scores in the paint and goes to rim as per most Eurostyle Points. Felton is getting real good at this.

Ginobli looks good in Highlights but does not put up huge numbers. Tough defender, tough handle, goes to the rim and is super clutch.

He didin't come to the nba until his he was like 27. Think he was as good as at age 22 in the NBA? He was not in the NBA.

Gallo at 22, Shy Wilson is 23. First season they have been asked to be prime time. I think they are responding very well.

If Melo don't come here don't blame Donnie cuz that extension is nuts and the price to pay what Nets are offering is nuts.

Knicks have to rebuild and it won't be that easy with limited resources. We don't "WIN NOW" as many think would happen.

YOU WIN NOW if he joins as free agent. Not if you have to find another Landry Fields and others who pass and play nice with others.

Chemistry matters!

Melo goes to Jersey cuz he wants the extension more than fitting in on an emeging team

Have you been reading these posts? You have guys trying to make weak arguments in Gallo's favor suggesting that he is the better option for this team. That in a few years, he can be Melo when there is nothing there to suggest he can ever legitimately carry a team. Melo has been doing it since Day 1 upon entering the league; most of the league's elite have. Gallo just doesn't have that and it's time we got someone that can.

If that were true, don't you think Melo would've signed the damn extension with the Nuggets already who have a better supporting cast than the Nets?

Chemistry matters but so does talent. And on another note, who is to say that a Knick team with Melo on it wouldn't develop chemistry? More importantly, there is nothing about Gallo's or Wilson's game to suggest that they'll ever become the player Melo has been, is and will continue to be. At 26 years old, the guy has a great deal of excellent basketball to play.

P.S., not sure what game you have been watching both Parker and Ginobli are and have been one of the most athletic backcourts in the league. Parker is a blurr and most guys still have a hard time accounting for Ginobli's rapid change of direction.

Yeah no ****. What the hell is the point of this???? Melo is good. Everyone get's that. You don't have to try to take a giant dump on the current roster to prove that.

I dunno about all these other posts you speak of but I thought we had kind of reached a consensus from which the debate was being made from.

Gallo is not as good as Melo. Truly special players like Melo, like you said, do it from day 1. That's why he makes and will make max money.

Anyone who suggest that Gallo is or is going to develop into a max worth player like Melo is off their rocker. I haven't seen many posts saying that Gallo is better than Melo. The only clear advantage I think Gallo has over Melo is that it appears that Gallo CARES about D a lot more than Melo. If they both gave equal effort Melo has the superior physical tools to be an elite defender.

From what I've been reading the debate has been which is the better of 2 paths:

1. Max Melo out, try to find players to fill in the rest of the teams needs.

2. Keep Gallo, let him develop and have more resources to fill in the rest of the team's needs. Gallo is nowhere near a max player (and according to you will never come even close)so you'll have more $ to get other players.

Again, you don't have to try to crap on Gallo's face to establish that Melo is a great player. I actually am completely confused as to how you claim to be a Knicks fan but have shown almost no sign that you're happy about a kid we drafted improving.

Gallo has an awesome 2 games and iSergio has to post Oh he disappears. He's not Melo. We can't win without production at Gallo's position.

Briggs says that Gallo has been performing at an all star level the past 2 games with 22/4/2 shooting 53% and you come back with "He's not Melo"

Rashard Lewis got voted an all star in 2009 when he averaged 18/6/3 shooting 44% from the field and he was making 15-20M.
Gallo is averaging 16/5/2 shooting 42% this season. In 8 games this December he basically has the same stats but shooting 46%. It seems like he's making a conscious effort to drive to the hole more. I just watched the Heat game again and he actually came off a curl and hit a J that wasn't a spot up 3.

I mean..do you and iSergio meet up for games? When Gallo take it the hole for a reverse dunk against the Celtics, do you just have a screw face on and look at your Melo poster and say "don't worry he's not as good as you Melo, you're still my favorite". When he was playing well against Miami, did you no enjoy it? I'm seriously confused here man.

Can we be happy about Gallo playing better without the Melo comparisons?

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

gallo, imho is even more expendable than i have ever realized, and i like him. his d effort was worthwhile on lebron, although he couldn't get close because lebron would have blown by him, and instead shot with plenty of space.

while the refs didn't give gallo love on the so-called fouls (amar'e was perhaps more deserving), it's more like the refs didn't see any legit finishing skills, and that he's purely trying to get calls, so since you are not a real star (aka, i can actually finish my moves) you get no calls. he was trying to get them, but the dude cannot finish when he drives consistently.

i like gallo, but i don't see him being able to be a whole lot more.

one nice dunk the other day compared to many, many clumsy attempts at the hoop that have very little chance at going in.

again, i think that is the problem i see, and perhaps why no calls were made.

he pretty much ONLY tries to draw a foul, which is smart, but as we can see, if there is no call, or if the defense smarts up (which i saw) no finish.

the heat played MUCH better defense in the 2nd half.

gallo + td + curry + azu + picks for melo is more than fine with me.

Forum Po Po and #33 for a reason...

the day we made that dumb Zach Randolph trade, i said our best move would have been to go after Ron Artest... i think he would have brought the defensive intensity this team lacked all throughout those dark years... of course, who knows how much more volatile a mix it would have been to add him to that powderkeg mix... not that we had much to lose at that point since NOT having Artest didn't prevent things from becoming a circus anyway.

would be nice if there were a Bruce Bowen type player out there to be had... someone who could man up on guys like Lebron, Kobe, etc. & at least make life difficult for them... no one's gonna stop those guys obviously but if u can at least make them exert more effort to get off their shots, maybe it takes a little edge off their defensive games on the other end... maybe someone like James Posey would be a nice option to target in that type of role... he hits big shots too as we've all seen... i wanted us to target Matt Barnes in the offseason too, i thought he could fill that type of pain in the arse role player that guys hate to be guarded by... Raja Bell is another guy we should probably look into in that kind of role... Toney Douglas is an able defender but he's too undersized to guard most SG's & SF's.

After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

Is the best solution to get Melo to match a guy like Bron or get someone who can help the Knicks do what the Heat did to us: take away their bread and butter on offense, make it difficult for one of the best offensive teams in the league (The Knicks) to score.

If the plan is to get Melo and then try to just score 130 points a game, it's gonna be fun to watch us try to win like that. Who says it can't be done?

it's too bad there isn't a shut down defensive player like a Ron Artest that you can put up against the other team's top scorer & forget about him out there to be had, because if there's anything our team needs right now, it's that type of player... but right now i don't see all that much upside in adding a role playing C that would likely be finding himself riding pine down the stretch of ballgames in MDA's system... those types of add ons should not be our main priority at this point... of course, it's good to address the bench depth as well, but we should first focus on upgrading the talent in our starting rotation to match up against the elite talent in the NBA.

Ron Artest is a freak. The guy takes genuine joy out of shutting guys down. This thing killed me:

Tonight, the coaches have told him to force [Tyreke] Evans to his left, but the first four times Evans touches the ball, Artest forces him right.

Explain, Ron-Ron?

"Just to see if I can stop them," he says. "I like looking at a guy's face when he realizes that even his best moves aren't going to work on me all night. They look depressed."

This is the funniest thing I've read on an athlete in a loooong time http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=5902468

To be honest, I think we have two players that have shown promise of being the "pain in the arse" you described: Wilson Chandler and Landry Fields. Both players are particularly length and strong for their respective positions, using these advantages to their benefit on defense. I love the idea of continuing to start Fields while bringing in Wilson off the bench as our 3/4 for either Melo or Amar'e.

Now, I'm not being a hater here. Gallinari played like a Star in those half's but we don't need a part time player. He has this bad habit (even dating back to last year) where he just does nothing for two quarters. We cannot win without production at his position.

Well...that's kind why Melo gets paid the max and Gallo is making 3.3 M this season right? Why does everything have to be MELOMELOMELOMELOMELOMELO?
I'm sick of these types of exchanges.

A: Gallo has been playing better this season.

B: LOL, he's no Melo.

Yeah no ****. What the hell is the point of this???? Melo is good. Everyone get's that. You don't have to try to take a giant dump on the current roster to prove that.

We just had a pretty heated debate in a thread titled "dont want dont need carmelo" and have had several threads of its ilk in just the few days I've been a member of this board and you're unaware of posters who favor Gallo over Melo? I'm not going to bother to point them out but I'd recommend that you review that thread and this one for a couple names.

We also can be happy about Gallo playing better but if you read the beginning of this thread, it had nothing to do with him; it had everything to do with voicing the need for Melo. The pro-Gallo cliche felt the need to once again reintroduce the same tired argument about how Gallo is all we need at the 3 spot and about how Melo isn't an upgrade. Like I just said, I'm all for Gallo playing better but I'm not going to rest my future on an inconsistent, complimentary player because we drafted him. No one player is above the success of this team and we've been terrible too long to settle on mediocrity, which is basically what we are now. The question you should be asking is what is everyone's infatuation with this kid? He may very well not even be the best SF on this team (Wilson Chandler anyone?).
