Great plan, just terribly executed.
Really is a bit too much to try and nitpick when a guy comes into a situation where EVERYONE knows he's trying to pawn off crap to get cap space and he still gets it done. In the end we really haven't lost out on much for what we can get in return.
You think this situation was easy or something? We had practically nothing to trade and no strength of bargaining position. Still at the end of the day, he got us to where we needed to be. 2 MAX FA cap space is nothing to sneeze at.
From Crzymdups
that's so very easy for you to say from where you're sitting.
Yes it is. But I also have business/negotiating experience to know what I am talking about.
As I said a number of times....it was a great plan and I hope we get LeBron + another max FA. However the execution was horrible from a negotiating standpoint. As you said, everyone knew what Donnie needed to do. But that was because Donnie told everyone what he needed to do and so that made it much harder and expensive to accomplish. He needed to keep it quiet until he accomplished it.
He also waited for the trade deadline where he was boxed into a corner. He knew the plan 1 1/2 years ago. He should have unloaded Jeffries last year....or over the summer....or at the beginning of this year. It would have been much less costly than what he just did. Yes, he accomplished getting rid of Jeffries contract, but at a terribly high price. That is my point. A GM should know how to negotiate. Donnie doesn't. Morey does!
But go and rejoice even though we could have been in a much, much stronger position than we are in right now.
Walsh's best trade, and it was excellent, (no sarcasm), was trading Darko for Cardinal. A very smart move, but very minor.
The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.
