Doc & Marbs press conference.
(NECN: Boston, Mass.) - Ladies and gentlemen, Stephon Marbury is in Boston. And he's headed to the court now.

Marbury and Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers met with the media shortly before the team's game with Indiana tonight, in a news conference that lasted just a little less time than Marbury's first practice with the team. "We had about an hour," quipped Rivers. But that was long enough for him to be convinced marbury was ready to play.

"We're just going to throw him out there," Rivers said, saying Marbury's minutes would be determined by the rhythm of the game and Marbury's conditioning. With Gabe Pruitt suspended and Tony Allen out, he added, "We just need bodies."

But Marbury said he was ready to get out there, after sitting out most of the year in a contract dispute with the New York Knicks. "I'm just going to go out and play as hard as I can," Marbury said. "I have been training basically the whole summer and up until now, so I am ready to play basketball."

Rivers said he'd be forgiven for any opening night errors. "If he screws up a play, it's because he doesn't know it," Rivers said. "One thing I told Steph was on the the court was just to be free, just to play."

And Marbury says he will fit whatever role Rivers wants him to. "I'm so happy to just be able to play basketball again, let alone what my role is."

Seriously I think Marbury could do well in this situation. The time period is relatively short - he's shown he can be on his best behavior for a while, so long as everything goes well.

What happens if there is a lack of "truck-worthy" interns roaming the Boston Garden?

Flip thinks he can help:
Flip Saunders, who coached Stephon Marbury in Minnesota, believes that the point guard will help the Celtics defend their NBA title.

"Anything he does in a game is strictly to win," Saunders said. "Your greatest fear if you're on the other team is his desire to win. His greatest strength can also be what you worry about, though. He wants to win so much that he thinks he can do it on his own. He wants to win more than anything, and he'll do whatever that takes. But Doc (Rivers) will be able to control this, I think.

"Steph is the kind of player who is going to win a game or two in the playoffs on his own. I think he's still that kind of player," Saunders said.

The former coach also believes that Marbury will be patient playing behind Rajon Rondo.

"I think (Marbury) will be patient. Doc will play who he has to play, and (Marbury) will go along with it."

“When he left for New Jersey, he called me about a week after he was traded,” Saunders, who coached Marbury and Garnett with the Timberwolves, said yesterday. “There was never any need for us to patch things up - we just went on.

“But the last thing I told him was, ‘I hope in 25 or 30 years that you, me and KG can sit around a table and talk to each other about what if - what would have happened if we had all stayed together, what if we had gone all the way.’ But now those two have another chance together.”

Marbury later told Saunders that his flight from Minneapolis was strictly business - and a chance to move within hollering distance of his family and friends in Brooklyn.

But the franchise suffered.

Tom Gugliotta, the third jewel in the Timberwolves’ crown, also left, leading general manager Kevin McHale to his first crisis - the salary cap-subverting signing of Joe Smith.

That led to commissioner David Stern making Minnesota an example, as he buried the franchise with fines and forfeited draft picks.

All that started with Marbury’s trade demand.

Garnett, who gave his blessing to Danny Ainge’s desire to sign Marbury - a move that would not have happened without the forward’s approval - was hurt.

“Yeah, KG was a little taken aback by it,” said Saunders. “When Steph came out in the (1996) draft KG stepped up for him as a big proponent. We went from winning 26 games the year before to winning 40 his rookie year. Steph left in the lockout year when we had the best record in the Western Conference.

“At the time everyone felt hurt - the coach, management, the players, we all did. But Steph said it was business, nothing else, and I believe him. When he left it was because of the CBA. He was young and influenced by agents. The idea of going back to New York appealed to him.”

I expect big things from Marbury in Boston. It's a perfect fit.

A major dickhead in a city full of them.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

that was only the first half. he finished with 8pts on 4 of 6 shooting. look, no one has ever questioned his ability as a scorer. he would have scored 20ppg off the bench in this offense if he wasn't a lunatic.
