Good thread... Monroe has value and brings some good things to the table. He also has some shortcomings. Ultimately his value to us should be determined by how he fits.

If there is a similar caliber player I could compare him to its the David Lee signing. Lee got something similar to what we are speculating Monroe will get. I think that deal has worked out OK for them... but at the end that contract has eclipsed Lee's value. If this was football Lee would be cut in the offseason as a salary cap casualty.

I do see Monroe as a nice fit in a lot of scenarios and yes.. even at 4/$60mm ($15per). Another similar player would be Boozer. A guy who has been paid, and has also helped his teams, but has also been a guy who's contract outlived his production.

Monroe isnt the guy whos door Im banging on at midnight when FAs can sign... but I let his agent know we are players and he's someone we value and want to talk too.

Assume we whiff on Aldridge, Gasol, Jordan and Love (the consensus tier 1 guys).

Then your looking at 2 choices: overpaying for tier 2 guys (Milsap, Monroe, Jefferson(PO), Hibbert (PO), David West (PO))
OR
stop gap types like bringing back Bargs, Jason Smith for cheap

Detroit isn't letting him go. They will try like hell to keep him. Point is he is attainable. But seems like he will look for a fresh start, his game has clearly hit a wall in detroit, but if nothing is better out there, i'm sure he could easily resign there as well.

This is a good post. Boozer is a decent Monroe comparison, though Boozer was actually a very good rebounder and was averaging 21ppg and 12rpg when he was Monroe's age.

I'd rate guys like Milsap, Hibbert and David West well above Monroe. Boozer, Hibbert, David West have all been all-stars in their career and play D.

Depending on who they draft, I wouldn't hate a Monroe signing, I guess, but I feel like there are much better options out there.

To me - the guy they get at PF has to really work with Melo on D. I see Monroe causing massive issues just because Melo is already so slow-footed. Melo is actually best at guarding the post.

You know who I'd really like that is kind of a 3/4 forward? Thaddeus Young. Covers for Melo on D. Melo is basically a 3/4 himself. Again, it depends on who is there at the draft.

At this stage though, I'd much rather pair Melo with Thaddeus Young or Tobias Harris than Greg Monroe.

I think you guys are going overboard trying to add players to compensate for Melo's defense..He isn't that bad...Melo's issue isn't that he can't play defense, it's that he isn't always giving 100% on the defensive end...The discussion of his defense has grown to mythical proportions at this stage..I have no problem with Melo guarding anyone including LeBron in a big game..U don't see opposing players eating Melo for breakfast over the course of a game..What you do see is lazy help or reaction in some game situations..

Greg Monroe is a non impact player..I would not toss max money or anything close to that at him...

I agree it's mainly lack of effort... but as Melo gets older it's not like he's gonna start giving more effort on D. Look at Kobe - dude was an all world perimeter defender when he was young. As he got older, he started "preserving energy" on the defensive end so he could still put up 20-30 shots on the other end. Melo will be similar, I bet.

I just want a young and energetic guy on D. If you're paying a 25 year old big man $12-$15M a year, I want him to be able to defend.

I do like the idea of Tobias Harris or Thad Young - I feel like those guys play energetic D. Harris is 22 and has the same TS% as Monroe - he just has a much better jumper and has added a three point shot to his arsenal this year.

Don't think we have a shot at your tier 1 guys but we have a good shot at the tear 2. I will rank tear 2...

PF/C Personal preference if we draft Towns or Russell:
-------------------
MONROE(24)
Millsap(30)
Jefferson(30)
Ajinca(26)
Lopez(26)
West(34)
Hibbert(28)
Bogut(30)
Sanders(26)

I would take either even West on a short term deal who is 34. Would make Alan Hahn who loves his leadership very happy.

The beauty of drafting Towns or Russell is they fit with any of those. OK4 does not because he is not s 2-way big

I agree with that list definitely. Pretty much the same order of preference for me too. I would say that i think we have a shot at Love now. He is the one top tier guy who might be available. He doesn't want a Twolves situation so he won't go to LA. He doesn't seem to want to be a glorified role player on a lebron led team. Sharing the spotlight with Melo in NY would probably offer a happy medium for him where he can get into the playoffs where it's easier in the east, and still be recognized as a star player. Might not be the best fit with Melo, but he's a great fit in the offense.

I don't know about Love. He is a jumpshooter certainly would be great to have but not for anything near max. In Minnesota he got David Lee points in the paint. A lot of them off offensive rebounds but that's not sustainable depending on how well the opponent rebounds. He is not great in the post by any stretch.

I like Thaddeus and Harris but Not so much in this system. We need to beat teams on the perimeter and with legitimate post play. Height and/or girth

what is the system? as of a month ago it didn't include pick and roll. all the sudden we get Bargs and Shved in the lineup and Fisher adds some wrinkles for them to thrive.

Fisher seems to be able to tweak the system to suit the talent he has available to him.

Depending on who we draft I would accept either of Monroe, Lopez and Ajinca. They are all younger players who have good years left and can provide good production. If it's OK4 then Lopez or Ajinca makes sense. If it's Towns you can get by with Monroe as your low post threat and Towns can move around and score from anywhere. The idea is that you can make it work with any combination depending on who we draft. Obviously if we draft Russell that opens up the PF and C spot to a Monroe and Lopez/Ajinca combo.

Depends if people are satisfied just making the playoffs of competing against teams like San Antonio, okc, Memphis, Cleveland, Chicago and even Atlanta

Towns fits with any of those guys since he can play inside and out on offense depending on who he is playing next to. While not getting in Melo's way.

If we have this kind of successful off season We are going to to be capable of beating teams in so many way. It all depends on Melo buying in. The East is extremely weak. We can dominate the East and be right up there with Cleveland.

Detroit can offer him 5yr deal vs 4yr deal for everyone else and 10% raises instead of 7.5% raises, I believe. They can trump anyone's offer if it is about money. I don't know too much about his thought process. Stan let Josh Smith walk for nothing - at a huge cost to the team. You have to wonder if part of that was to make Monroe and Drummond happy and the first move to re-sign both of those guys. We shall see.
