After signing a 4-year contract to stay with the #Knicks, JR Smith undergoes surgery. More:

First things first, it was a no-brainer to re-sign Smith. The Knicks had very little options in free agency this summer, but to keep their No. 2 scorer and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year for a very fair market price (see: J.J. Redick and Kevin Martin) was essential.

Days after he inked the deal, however, he underwent surgery to repair the patella tendon and lateral meniscus in his left knee. The recovery time is set for 12 to 16 weeks, which means Smith is likely to miss all of training camp and could miss the start of the regular season.

The Knicks said it was a chronic injury that gradually worsened. I had heard late last season that Smith was dealing with a knee issue but he was playing so well it was hard to tell. It certainly explains his struggles in the playoffs if the injury did, in fact, get worse.

He should be fully recovered and playing his usual minutes by Christmas, so the Knicks will get more than a half-season of him. There are three more years beyond that.

The concern, really, is the start of the season and who will pick up the scoring slack off the bench in his absence. It could be, coincidentally, Amar'e Stoudemire, who assumes the Sixth Man role.

Or, perhaps, it will be rookie Tim Hardaway Jr.

With only three other veteran guards under contract -- Raymond Felton, Pablo Prigioni and Iman Shumpert -- right now, the backcourt will be thin. I'd expect the team will come up with at least one veteran for the backcourt, if not two. Aaron Brooks is still out there and Raja Bell last month had what was reportedly an impressive workout with the Knicks.

Who do you think has to step up in Smith's place?

Giving a guy with JR's history and "chronic knee problems" a 4 year deal is a "no brainer"? Interesting.

JR had the same surgery as Westbrook and Budinger. When did his issue become chronic? Budinger just got a new deal at a little over 5 mil per and he is just back from this surgery.

The article says his knee injury was chronic so I would call that chronic knee problems. You keep bringing up other athletes like one size fits all. I hope he comes back 100 percent. I was against 4 years before we knew about his knee. Its not like this is making me change my mind.

I'm not saying he won't come back 100 percent or that he will. We don't know. I'm going on what I see on the court. Last two years in the playoffs I didn't like what I saw at all.

The guys I brought up came up when I looked up his surgery. Chase and jr are right around the same age so it seems relevant in my opinion. No one is talking about other guys that have had this surgery like it is career or even performance threatening.

Budinger is almost three years younger and doesn't play the same way JR does, doesn't use his dribble as much to break down a defender, doesn't have the ball as much.

I don't want to give the impression that this knee injury alone is what made me against this 4 year deal because I just found out about it like everyone else. All it does make me like the terms of this deal even less.

Sounds like the surgery went well. Quote from Grunwald.
"We're pretty comfortable that it's something that's fixable and won't present problems in the foreseeable future," he said. "J.R. is a good worker and the report from the surgeon was good. We're optimistic he'll be ready to go when the regular season rolls around."

Apparently Smith may have played in the Rucker with his hurt knee this offseason.

- NOW i see why they drafted Hardaway JR (they didnt know they would resign JR and if they did, i think they KNEW he needed knee surgery)

- this might be a blessing in disguise cuz now TJ and shump will get more reps and playing time. this can only add to depth

- he WILL be back in time for the season...he might not be 100% but he wont miss much

- a player starts to lose their athletic ability in their late 20s. JR is an athletic freak of nature who sometimes relied on his athletic ability to force bad shots. I think being "less athletically" blessed will literally ground him...and could force him to be more intelligent

Last I checked, loss of athletic ability didn't make people smarter. Bonn can tell us if there's any correlation.

If they need to survive in a tribe and still get access to females they have to get smarter...

What did JR know and when did he know it?

This came out at the same time Rhianna said he was playing
Poorly because he was partying. I even posted it here
But everyone preferred to believe otherwise..
True Knick fans

being injured and partying are not mutually exclusive

here you go, the specific post you were referring to. The "THIS" is referring to the title of the thread.

Is that reply directed at me? I don't follow what you're saying

no, not you Bonn. GustavBahler sort of accused me of flip flopping. Said I was complaining about JR partying it up and now I was changing my story. Just wanted to show him what I actually said.

Already took that statement back and you didn't answer my question.

sorry, tried to respond with my android but, for some reason it didn't save the post. As to your question, not sure if I fully understand it. Was it regarding the 4years JR got. If so, I think we are in agreement that 4years is too many. 2years would have been perfect since I can't see KNick fans embracing him for so long. 2years with the 2nd year backloaded to help bring more money off the cap when Amare and Co expire.

the fact that you can't even have an unrelated thread without some tool here bringing him up make me think that rational minds are few and far between. Bunch of emotionally weak, angst riddled people. I mean, how many times can you argue the same shyt
