Not to sound like a homer but Melo has actually been passing fairly well all season long but people have to make them in order to get credit for assts. Not only do people (namely Melo in this case) not get credit for "hockey assists", a lof of times those passes lead to fouls/foul shots.
For instance around half of Amare's points this season have come off of a feed from Melo

guys i have been watching most of the games and i am telling you he has not been passing the ball like this until lately. whether teammates are making shots is irrelevant here, it's about ball movement and offensive cohesion.

the best measure of this is to compare the ratio of his usage rate to the assist rate while he is on the floor, the latter stat not being the number of assists the player gets but rather whether an assist is made while he is on the floor. the higher the ratio the more selfish and the lower the ratio the more team-oriented he is.

by way of example a point guard like nash will have a ratio of around 0.30:1, ie far less than 1. wade is 1:1, bryant and jordan are about 1.35:1. lebron is .80:1.

carmelo for most of the season has been over 3.0:1 but lately has lowered that to 2.5:1 or less.

i can look up the numbers if you want me to back up what i am asserting but he is passing the eye test.
