dolan was forced to hire walsh after dolan epitomized ten years of how not to be a good franchise model.
walsh, left alone to work, did a fine job of creating cap space while d'antoni soldiered through an ugly two years of coaching many players who knew they were only expensive stopgaps. that d'antoni is held accountable by some for those two years is unfair and laughable.
obviously walsh and other gms were duped by lbj-- but where the rubber meets the road walsh had to sign some big name and proceed forthwith. unfortunately this is where pr forces a gm's hand. after slogging through two miserable seasons of roster flush a franchise can't risk alienating the fanbase. imagine what would have occurred had we not signed anyone that summer. and on this point lets remember that those two years of roster flush were not following on the heels of success but utter failure and futility-- thanks to dolan, thomas, and layden.
so walsh proceeded to assemble a team around stoudemire.
even if walsh were reluctant to sign stoudemire, he had to stick to a plan... and he did.
yet if you have to trace the affairs of this franchise to one source that source is dolan. the fish rots from the head down.
