Chess

The moment Jeremy Lin visited Houston, Glen Grunwald got busy on the phone.

Linsanity in Houston is not the same as New York.

Mike Woodson had input on this deal and Paulie Walnuts made it happen.

A lot of us saw some tension between Melo and Lin last year. Kidd will defuse that and make Melo put team and winning first and still set him up enough to get his. Kidd is basically a coach on the floor at this point. It's not a sexy move, but I think it is a good move.

Starting line up opening night will be:

Lin
Kidd
Melo
Amar'e
Tyson

bench: JR, Novak, Jorts, Jeffries?, Shawne Williams?, (SHUMP)

It'd be nice if we could convince Dallas to do a sign and trade and still keep the $3M MLE to make a run at Camby.

This is an improvement of the team. Allows the pieces that are already here to mix better and that is huge.

Will feel a lot better once Lin is matched, JR is signed, Novak is signed and we hear Shump is rehabbing and getting better.

You really think there is a chance Kidd starts at SG?

to start the season with Shumpert out? yes. JR will be firepower off the bench.

And I think that lineup will likely close out most games.

it gives the knicks two ballmovers to get the ball to their two best scorers.

kidd and lin can both shoot the 3 as well. kidd basically only shoots straight away 3s at this point in his career. 85% of his shots last year were 3pt shots. but he moves the ball and defends well.

i think kidd starts the game, closes out the first half, starts the third quarter, then closes out the game. Lin will play about 35+ minutes, some with kidd, some without.

i think the knicks may add that argentian PG playing in Spain... Prigioni? to be the third string PG.

Younger, better shooter, and he's not terrible with the ball in his hands. Basically, he's a better version of JR.

Younger doesn't get you points. If it did, we could get 5 year olds to play for us. Terrible with ball in hands? Like most fans, you're paying too much attention to "skill" and too little to outcome. The skill matters only if it gives you some tangible better outcome. Kidd actually had a slightly higher true shooting %. I still don't see anything Mayo does well.

I was pulling for the Felton return. It'll be bittersweet seeing Kidd in a Knicks uniform, but I suppose if I could learn to cheer for Johnny Damon, I might be able to cheer for him too. I do think his value as a team leader/Lin mentor outweighs the value of his on court minutes.

Still another week of unofficial news?

If it was Kidd 2 years ago I'd be ecstatic, but I just don't like the fact he's 39 and could drop off at any minute- he looked like he had declined last season. Honestly how many 40 year old point guards have contributed much in nba history.

I suppose I was also looking forward to Felton coming back and redeeming himself, now I feel like we've screwed him again- seemed like he really wanted to return.

I will say this- the media's sources have been terrible this offseason- seems like they've gotten everything wrong.

Kidd is here for some short smart minutes, and to be a tutor for Lin. Kidd is not a threat to Lin's minutes- there will be no Sanchez/Tebow speculation with Lin and Kidd being on the same team. Nash would not be coming here for minor minutes, and I think Felton would want about 20-25 MPG if on the team. Kidd has been to the finals 3 years, and won a title. He'll be a good teacher.

We had better match the contract for Lin, though. The thought of a Felton/Kidd backcourt "weighs" on my mind. Maybe Dallas screws around with Lin, now.

Their effective fg% and true shooting% are pretty similar but Mayo is much younger and can still improve. Kidd is at the end of his career and is only going to get worse.

That is a fair point. If the two were playing at a similar level now, even if it were only a small edge for Kidd, I'd go with Mayo. But Kidd has a huge edge in several aspects of the game and there are no areas with meaningful edges for Mayo.

Great signing. I wanted him more than Nash because he stated he was ready and willing to be a backup. He is a great teacher for Lin. I would be ecstatic if we could get Kidd in a SnT for Toney, Gadz and a second or something. I am loving the fact we kept our MLE. I think OJ Mayo is a GREAT fit at the full MLE (he is young, has solid potential, and isn't injury prone). I would resign Smith(maybe....I still would give Dantay Jones a call first), sign Mahimini to the vet min(or even a guy like Kmart), resign Novak and Jefferies...

Chandler/Mahimini
Stoudemire/Jefferies/Harrelson
Anthony/Novak
Mayo/Jones(Smith)/Shumpert
Lin/Kidd

There is a difference between having Kidd as a starter and having Kidd as a back up.

Offense:
PNR ballhandler 0.98 PPP (11th in league)
Spot-up 0.97 PPP (141st in the league, but overall not terrible)
Transition 0.54 PPP (291st in league) – crazy since Kidd used to be one of the best end-to-end transition guys ever

Defense:
pretty average – 0.83 PPP overall 166th in league
terrible against isolation – 1 PPP (297th)
otherwise ok, ranking 23rd-95th only other major play-types.

When you're desperate enough to but this is Kidd we're talking about. He isn't some has-been bench scrub. He's a seasoned pro. A veteran. A superstar. A Champion.

He is 39 years old....39...We will be paying him at 40, and 41 years old....

Knicks are stupid and the coach is not committed to starting Lin. But none of this makes any sense anymore. If Lin leaves, I'll definitely take a break from watching pro-ball. My interest has waned considerably as is. So - whatever.

I dunno.

If Lin doesn't come back, I might be done.

Ditto
