Knicks close to signing Stoudemire to five-year max contract »

The Knicks are closing in on signing Amar'e Stoudemire to a a five-year, maximum contract that would pay him in excess of $100 million.
The deal could enhance the Knicks long-shot odds of signing LeBron James but the idea of the Knicks getting three elite players to sign for significantly less money is now kaput in light of the talks with Stoudemire. Y! Sports was the first to report the Stoudemire deal, which could be finalized as early as today.
The deal would reunite Stoudemire with head coach Mike D'Antoni and could all but mean the end to David Lee's career as a Knick. Coincidentally, D'Antoni was often at odds with Stoudemire over a variety of issues and it was sometimes left to Steve Nash to act as peace maker.
Stoudemire and D'Antoni won't have that buffer in New York but it's clear the Knicks were desperate to do something, especially if James decides not to sign with the Knicks.
Stoudemire is a slight risk because of his previous knee and eye injuries. In fact, the Knicks will be unable to get his contract insured.
Johnson is still a possibility although it would mean Johnson accepting $30 million less to come to New York. Today, the Knicks met with Miami free agent Dwyane Wade in Chicago and will meet later with Chris Bosh.
