Because if one of those guys goes down with injury, you are left with 2 guards on the roster. Notice how the Knicks didn't resign Nate immediately. Notice how
doesn't rely upon Nate.
Nate did put up decent numbers during 1 stretch during 2008 season. If you can have him on a 1 year leash, there is a possibility he turns things around ala Josh Smith. Or there is a possibility that a playoff team wants him. Like that.
Knicks are not beholden to Nate, so there is not a huge downside risk.
