Poetry Slam's are usually competitions...

but Slam Poetry or sometimes referred to as Spoken Word is a style of poetry, that usually is very personal and opinionated (often political or involving social commentary, but can also be about boasting, braggadocio, etc.).

It's very much seeded in traditional African-American culture, and hip-hop, although not exclusively. Some Latino groups in the U.S. have also been very much involved from the beginning...The Nuyorican Poets Cafe has been a huge supporter of it.

I went to one by NYU and all the girls were bashing men. I first thought it was Lesbian nite and my girlfriend set me up. But I seen ones bashing Bush.
