That seems to suggest that it happened after the draft which would make me much more comfortable than if it occurred well before. You never know though.

Personally, I've hurt my back about 5 years ago. It took forever to go away. I kept rushing back and paid the price. I decided to wait until it was completely healed before I started back playing sports. It took a few months, but I haven't had problems since. It sucks that the Knicks won't reveal what it is. Without that info, everything is speculation.

Bip, it suggest the kid is not being honest or is in near Marbury mode. The story keeps changing. First he told the press it was the collision with Tractor, then it changed to being an issue because of lack of rest this past year and now it occured during practice before SL. I am down on the Knicks medical staff but like any patient you got to be honest with your doctor. Also if you remember Gallinari did not participate in scrimages only shooting and running drills. So is that where he hurt it during drills. It was a short amount of time before draft and SL pratice. You're right back injuries are the worst. My back still gives me trouble after an not so serious injury almost 15 years ago. Q-Rich is the best example to offer the Knicks. My question is that why come the Knicks didn't take this injury serious in the beginning and why did they allow their 1st round pick to board a plane without meeting with him during the summer to work out treatments.

I've learned never to beleive anything that comes out of the mouths of players, coach's, teams, newspapers regarding injuries. You never hear the truth. The question is, did he tell the Knicks the truth. Did he hide the injury or did the Knicks advise him to play? The Knicks don't handle anything well, so I would not be surprised. The big question is will the Knicks do it again. Will they rush him back to quiet the throng and risk further injury or will they be patient and make sure this guy is healed so it does not become chronic(if not already).

Your back went away? That's weird. How do you survive without a back?

He is enjoying watching all of his teammates practice and really enjoying it.

NYKnicks.com: So you had a chance to practice with the team out in Vegas and you are around them now. How is that going for you all together?

Gallinari: I think the best feeling is this week. I've had a chance to watch the whole team practicing and I have real nice feelings with the guys up here.

Danilo Gallinari will not be ready for camp. D’Antoni figures it will be a couple of weeks before the rookie is up and running. The cranky back has prevented any kind of basketball activity for the last two months.

Wow, is not a strong enough word but I can't think of any other. This guy has serious back trouble or a very low threshold of pain.

Between Gallo's back, the locker room monitor's knees, Curry's waistline and WillHeOrWontHeGetWaivedBury's situation we've got a lot to keep our eye on here. And that's all before Zach and Duhon start hitting the clubs...

More troubling news on Knick rookie Danilo Gallinari - the Italian Stallion revealed his summer-long back discomfort includes pain shooting down his leg, a strong indication of sciatica, more serious than the KnicksNew York Knicks have let on.

The Knicks have called it a "sore back" since mid-July. Sciatica could be caused by a herniated disc.

Gallinari has not played since the first game of the Las Vegas Summer League, July 14, and will miss most of preseason. Team president Donnie Walsh said Friday he's been told the injury is not serious.

My father had this and I suspected Gallinari had it as well. Explains alot. Surgery is the better option because inflammations occurs alot with this injury. I knew it had to be more than just a sore back. Knick medical staff has done it yet again. Bravo. Him and Q Rich should be good friends.

Sciatica is something you can easily recover from but this is definitely not good.

It depends. If it is related to a herniated disc then not so easy. You don't want it to be chronic, inflammation is a problem as well. It explains the cortisone shots he has been getting. My father had back surgery because he couldn't take the pain and was forced to retire. That was quite awhile ago so maybe treatment is better. I am surprised for a kid his age to have this problem. I remember Larry Bird going through with his sciatica during his playing career.

I had sciatica and it was horrible. Sciatica comes in all shapes and sizes. From extremely painful to just bothersome. Mine was fine for day to day. It bothered me if I sat for long periods, stopped short or of course played basketball. With sciatica surgery is rarely needed. Depends on a lot of things. Mine stayed with me for about 3 months because I was stubborn and did not seek treatement. Then I began going to physical therapy and doing back/core strengthening excercises. After that it went away in about 8 weeks and has not bothered me since. But every situation is different. I know a lady I work with that has sciatica that has lasted about 8 years. Of course she is overweight and that has a lot to do with it.

The Knicks revealed that first-round pick Danilo Gallinari is suffering from a bulging disk in his back. The team is confident that Gallinari, who has been out since mid-July, will practice by the end of the month.

Man, this team is so screwed up. The guy went from a simple sore back on July 14 after some contact with Tractor Taylor to now a bulging disc in his back. You can't make up this ****. You mean on July 14 they didn't know this? Hell they didn't realize this on June 28? Same old franchise. Every week this guy has new back issues.

http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/blog/2008/10/the_players_control_their_dest.html

"Here's what we know about Danilo Gallinari's back: it was a bulging disc, which irritated nerves around the area and caused that shooting pain Gallo mentioned. The disc has since receded and he is feeling better, but it is a situation where you have to allow the inflamed area to recover and the back to be strengthened. The Knicks expect him to be ready to go soon, but the bigger concern isn't about his back but his conditioning. Gallinari has not been allowed to run for a few months now. But I can tell you this from watching some of the drills on the side of the court after practice: this kid can shoot it."

I hope the kid can heal naturally. The surgical option is usually the last resort in the eyes of most doctors. In many cases they prescribe rest and therapy. This is why I had no problem with them holding him out of any practice or training. This guy needs to be 100% healthy before he does anything serious.

I don't know why the Knicks chose to keep things under raps, but I would guess that it had to do with the fact that people tend to panic when they hear there's a disc problem. There is absolutely no reason to rush this kid. It's not like he's gonna be NBA ready anyway. He clearly needs to get a lot stronger.
