Danilo Gallinari will not be ready for camp. D’Antoni figures it will be a couple of weeks before the rookie is up and running. The cranky back has prevented any kind of basketball activity for the last two months.
http://knicks.lohudblogs.com/2008/09/26/a-pep-talk-from-walsh-and-dantoni/ Wow, is not a strong enough word but I can't think of any other. This guy has serious back trouble or a very low threshold of pain. I don't like to play bad rookies , I like to play good rookies - Mike D'Antoni

More troubling news on Knick rookie Danilo Gallinari - the Italian Stallion revealed his summer-long back discomfort includes pain shooting down his leg, a strong indication of sciatica, more serious than the KnicksNew York Knicks have let on.
The Knicks have called it a "sore back" since mid-July. Sciatica could be caused by a herniated disc. Gallinari has not played since the first game of the Las Vegas Summer League, July 14, and will miss most of preseason. Team president Donnie Walsh said Friday he's been told the injury is not serious. http://www.nypost.com/seven/09302008/sports/knicks/sciatica_for_stallion__131339.htm My father had this and I suspected Gallinari had it as well. Explains alot. Surgery is the better option because inflammations occurs alot with this injury. I knew it had to be more than just a sore back. Knick medical staff has done it yet again. Bravo. Him and Q Rich should be good friends. I don't like to play bad rookies , I like to play good rookies - Mike D'Antoni

Sciatica is something you can easily recover from but this is definitely not good.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

"Here's what we know about Danilo Gallinari's back: it was a bulging disc, which irritated nerves around the area and caused that shooting pain Gallo mentioned. The disc has since receded and he is feeling better, but it is a situation where you have to allow the inflamed area to recover and the back to be strengthened. The Knicks expect him to be ready to go soon, but the bigger concern isn't about his back but his conditioning. Gallinari has not been allowed to run for a few months now. But I can tell you this from watching some of the drills on the side of the court after practice: this kid can shoot it." I hope the kid can heal naturally. The surgical option is usually the last resort in the eyes of most doctors. In many cases they prescribe rest and therapy. This is why I had no problem with them holding him out of any practice or training. This guy needs to be 100% healthy before he does anything serious. I don't know why the Knicks chose to keep things under raps, but I would guess that it had to do with the fact that people tend to panic when they hear there's a disc problem. There is absolutely no reason to rush this kid. It's not like he's gonna be NBA ready anyway. He clearly needs to get a lot stronger. |
