So, this morning I did 35 sit ups, around 15 push ups (using the dj method), did some airplanes as Bonn suggested, and rode the exercise bike for approximately half an hour, while watching a video. I feel pretty good today. Hmm, this exercise thing works much better than caffeine for energy, doesn't it?

Thanks to Nermal being noisy at 5 AM this morning, I couldn't go back to sleep, so I wound up doing extra exercise. Not sure whether to kick the cat (j/k) or give him a treat.

Maybe that's the trick for me: exercise in the morning. Thoughts?

Enyspree is right though that technically pull-ups would be a better match for push ups. You aren't really doing a heavy weight when you do airplanes and you're still working your chest harder than you're back. Doing airplanes is better than doing nothing though.

You can also do wall squats for your quads if you're looking for something to do without having any weights.

What were you doing wrong on deadlifts? Deadlifting and squatting with the wrong form is a recipe for disaster!

Well I was doing it straight legged. That's a no no. People do it that way but if you have a messed up back to begin with its just a bad recipe.

Now I try to approach them like I do squats and try to press my feet through the floor and keep my upper body upright.

What the hell does milking the trout mean? I tried to google it but I guess there really is a way to milk a trout.

I see. I don't have a pull up bar, so that's out for now. I guess I don't have to do push ups. The main things I actually want to work on are three things: my legs, keeping them loose since I sit in a chair for much of the day (downside to being a programmer), abs and cardio.

So, ultimately maybe I should be doing crunches instead of push ups and airplanes.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Push ups are still a great exercise. I'd keep doing them and do the airplanes if you don't have any weights to use or a pull up bar. If you have more chest and shoulder mass (which push ups will give you), your abs will look better because your waist will look smaller compared to the mass of your upper body.

Also, I'm cutting soda out and haven't had a Monster in two days, instead replacing that with a 5 hour energy (half the caffeine of a full can of monster) and tea (mostly green tea and white tea)... and of course more water.

Thanks for the tips, guys. It's cool to go over this stuff.

Monster's diet energy drinks are what I was drinking. The problem is that it's carbonated (not good for you) and it has a lot of caffeine. Plus it gives a major drowsy downer when it wears off.

The 5 hour energy is much better, as it has half the caffeine of monster so I don't get hit with as bad of a downer... plus limiting my caffeine under 200 mg a day would be good.

I'll keep going with the pushups. I know cardio is going to be tough, but I figure if I can get my legs to be more loose (they tend to be tight from sitting so long), then cardio will come a little easier.

Do you play any sports? I get my cardio in from basketball. It's not ideal but it's the only cardio I'll actually stick to. I hate just using treadmills or any of that stuff.

I like playing basketball, of course, but since I moved, I haven't played. Not sure where good places to play around here are, and I mostly prefer either shooting around or playing with/against people I know. Other than that, the thought of joining a softball league has crossed my mind, but since I haven't played in years, I probably suck now. :P

I have a slight ego when it comes to basketball. I don't like showing up to play if I'm not in the shape I want to be in.

Maybe we can all get together and play ball together soon. Whenever winter goes away for good. It was freakin cold today (friday 18th).

I'm still working out 2-3 times a week. I've gotten a few comments from people that I don't see regularly that I have slimmed down. I don't think I'll hit my goal weight cause I gravitate towards lifting everytime I am in the gym. Today after work there is a 5k that I am running in. My first of the season.

Hey, Jesse. I'm glad you are doing your thing. Keep it up. When you get your endorsement deals from winning those marathons, holla at your internet friend.

People keep telling me it looks like I'm gaining weight. The scale still says the same thing and my bodyfat is slowly decreasing. Whatever. I feel great. That's what its all about. I still can't seem to get the cardio in. Its just the whole voyage to the gym that just kills it for me. Jogging outside is too much pounding on my knees.

Waa waa waa crybaby.

Anyway, there is still about 4 weeks till summer is officially here. Get er dun!

Deadlift question:

I think they are making me slower. Is that possible? When I run I also feel my lower back tightening up.

Man this is some bull****!

I never heard of them making someone slower! I remember when I first started deadlifting, I had a lot of lower back soreness. Make sure you've warmed up first. And do a light (maybe 60% of what you plan to lift later) set before you lift deadlift hardcore. That helps me.

down 4 pounds with 15 more to go. I'm not dieting or anything. I am eating whatever I want and drinking all the time but I am doing at least 30 mins of cardio everyday and not drinking any soda. Next up this week is going back to weights and setting up a diet plan. Kinda tough eating Tofu burgers all the time but oh well. Small portions is the key right?

2 questions about doing weights:
Are you supposed to roll your shoulders when you do your shoulder shrugs? I have heard reasons for both 'yes' and 'no' so I'm just going by whatever majority says.

How long do you rest between sets? Is there an optimal time window or does it differ from what muscle you are doing etc?
