So, looks like poor, misunderstood LB had a job lined up anyway in Philly. Ironically, he sat with Billy King all through the pre-draft camp in Orlando, while he was still under contract with the Knicks. But good ole LB would never do a thing like that would he? nah. no way. not our LB. if you knew your employer was going to fire you would you sit home and watch TV or start smoozing on the street. That's just human nature. Plus, all of these guys are friends, but I guess that could look like anything if you want it to.
maybe. I definitely would if I WANTED to be fired. remember, he basically did the same thing to get fired in Detroit. he was a great coach at one point, but I think with his performance the last two years in the Olympics, his exit from Detroit and his disgrace in NY present a definite pattern.
why was his exit from Detroit so bad? I remember clearly that the players said that nothing Brown did distracted them from their jobs. Detroit owners PAID LB to leave, not the other way around. If LB absolutely did something wrong, you can be assured that he would have been fired and not paid one cent. That was not the case.
Olympics? Didn't the whole World tournament this past summer give us all a better feel for the level of competition and what it takes for the US to win? The women and their coach sucks too, apparently. So does coach K. Detroit was bad because he started interviewing for the president and gm position before he had permission (with Cleveland). he got it after the fact, but people everywhere were saying it was a big distraction for the detroit players. big ben clearly loved LB, but guys like Chauncey and Sheed were saying they liked playing for Flip better. Some of them, I'd have to look up who, said that Brown's last few months with the Cleveland drama were a definite distraction.
The Olympics was bad because he was doing the same routine with Marbury, he didn't use Lebron, Wade, Amare or Melo enough and leaned completely on Duncan and when Duncan got in foul trouble, they'd always lose. I would argue that the 2004 Olympic team was actually better than the team that went to the Worlds. Healthy Amare, Tim Duncan was involved, Odom, Jefferson, Marbury, Wade, Bron, Iverson. He did a horrible job. Stern refused to speak to him in Athens, it's not like it's a secret that people up top thought he was horrible.
As for Coach K, I think he's a great coach, but I don't know if it makes sense to have a college coach coaching NBA players to play under international rules. It adds additional wrinkles to the game for the coach. I think they need a good, strong NBA coach. I'd vote Mike D'antoni or Don Nelson or Rick Carlyse or even Flip Saunders - someone who can run an inventive offense that adapts to the international rules and be competent at defense - preferably understanding a zone. But I don't know if a working NBA coach would want the responsibility at this point, because there is clearly an added responsibility level and added pressure. I think maybe one of the best choices would be to put Don Nelson and his son on the staff. I don't know though.
