I don't agree with sending the NBA champs in a tournament where you have to win EVERY game. NBA teams never do this; they try to get home court advantage and win the majority. The olympic plan we have is pretty good; we just lack shooters and defense; hopefully we'll find a way to make it work.
Actually, you don't have to win every game. It doesn't work like the NCAA's. I believe it is Round Robin or a similar sytem. In the Olympics the U.S. still could have won gold after losing to Puerto Rico.
I really don't think the recent U.S. squads that have lost are truly lacking anything, shooting, defensive ability or any other skill. Some foreign teams might have better overall shooters but their defense is not better because of individual play. In fact, I don't think their defense is anything to write home about. If anything they are way more effective on offense. Greeces offense beat the U.S.'s offense.
It is just if you are discombobulated your defense will suck even worse than your offense. It takes more time and is a lot harder to develop a strong team defense. Every individual needs well defined and practiced roles, trust of each other because they know what the other players will do in a given situation. It takes yeas to develop. Sounds like a job for the NBA champs!!
Have you hung your ass out there yet?!?!?
