Maybe this is beating a dead horse...above some folks were writing about surly treatment from transit workers. It has happened to all of us.
I have been spending a lot of time on the bus lately and guess what? I have seen tons of poor treatment of the transit workers by the riding public. Sometimes many times in one ride. I'll let you do the math, who do you think gets treated badly more often, any one transit worker who comes into contact with thousands of people a month, or you, who comes into contact with a transit worker occasionally?
I would venture to guess that the transit worker has more bad experiences with private citizen ass-holes in a week than any of us has had with ass-hole transit workers in our lives. So by the time you get treated badly, chances are that the transit worker has had his/her fill that day of poor treatment.
Try thinking of someone else and cut the TWU worker some slack.

I can can give examples of both sides of the story.
When I was in High School there was this bus driver that used to bypass my stop almost everyday. It was just me there and I went to catholic school and I was a skinny guy back then....hardly a threat. Sometimes he would pick me up and sometimes he wouldn't. He was an *******. Thing is the only reason I was out there was because it was 5:30am and I was trying to make it to school for detention at 7am. So I got tired of getting in trouble in school and getting shafted so I ran through the projects to meet him on the other side, ran up the stairs of the bus and I Bruce Lee drop kicked that mofo!!!! I cleared the pole and got him right in the jaw. I stopped on him a few times too. A passenger was like "That's that kid he always leaves! Good for you son but you gotta get outta here" So I took a cab and rode my bike for a while. I have assaulted a few buss drivers in my day.
Since I have been a conductor......I have been spit at alot. Mostly kids, butalot of adults do it too. I've been called all types of names. Pus sy, ass hole and stupid mofo are some of the daily things I get called. People get mad if you leave them but on the platform but sometimes at a crowded stop you have to get those doors closed as soon as you get an opening. Alot of times you hold the doors and then the passenger will hold the doors for their family that is still buying metro cards. People don't think but if I hold the train just 2 minutes for you and yours, what happens at the next stop and the next one? If the train is delayed even a 30 extra seconds per stop you will wind up clogging the line 20 minutes by the time you get to the end of the line. Then people will spit at you if the train is late.
People throw **** all the time. Glass bottles, screws and rocks.....you name it. It's just part of the job. I personally don't let anything bother me unless someone is just acting up for no reason. I try to stay as alert as I can because anything can happen at any time and there have been so many instances that I can get into that I have to deal with on a daily basis.
High stress is part of the job. People in general deal with stress differently.
People say conductors are nasty if you ask a question. You got to realize that the conductor has only a few seconds to answer your question. If you want an in depth answer then expect to get ignored and the train will move. If you ask where 2345 broadway is then expect to get a smart reaction to that. Broadway goes from lower manhatten till you get to the Bronx. How could a conductor know that?
I dunno. I'm just giving my two cents. I hope everyone appreciates it.
