don't worry, help is on the way... JB Cox is doing very well so far in AAA & Mark Melancon just had a very encouraging extended outing in middle relief at Trenton AA... between Edwar (who's also been pitching tremendously so far) & those 2 kids we should have some options to replace Joba in the setup role... hopefully 1 of those kids has that same closer's mentality & can get the job done in high pressure situations... the only time i wanna see LaTroy Hawkins pitching for the Yankees again is in mopup duty... Farns isn't suited for the 8th inning role either cuz he's way too inconsistent & gives up too many longballs.
I'm really interested in seeing what Cox and Melancon can do at this level. Edwar is pitching great so far. The commentators last night made a good point about how he's throwing a little bit harder this year which makes his devastating changeup even better. Humberto Sanchez is close to pitching again after Tommy John surgery but he's a guy who could make an impact next year. Same with Andrew Brackman.
MARK MELANCON picked up the action in the top of the 4th inning from the suspended game with no outs and runners on 1st and 3rd base. He got the first batter to line out to 3rd baseman Keven Russo who made a nice play. The next batter hit into a doubleplay (3-6-3) to get out of the inherited jam........In the 5th inning he got the first batter on a flyout to Jose Tabata in rightfield in front of the warning track. He walked the 2nd batter on 4 pitches. He then got a foul popout to the catcher Eladio Rodriquez. The next batter got an infield single to 2nd base. A groundout to shortstop was the final out of the scoreless 5th inning....... In the 6th inning. Melancon got a groundout to 2nd, a single to rightfield, and a 5-4-3 doubleplay for a scoreless 6th inning......Melancon also pitched a perfect 7th inning getting 2 groundouts to short and 2nd and a strikeout.
Melancon's line: 4 innings, 0 runs, 2 hits (1 infield), 1 strikeout---1 walk. In 4 games since being promoted to Trenton covering 11 innings Melancon has only allowed 1 run. Melancon left the game with a 3-1 lead.
AUSTIN JACKSON got a key hit with a 2-rbi double to give Trenton the 3-1 lead in the 5th inning. Jackson also singled in the 4th and struckout in the 7th.
JOSE TABATA reached on an error leading off the 5th inning and scored the tying run at the time at 1-1. Tabata added 2 singles in the 6th and 9th innings.
