Cano had a nice at bat, but Papelbon basically destroyed us after the delay.

The game was lost by pitching to Manny with 2 guys in scoring position with 2 outs. Manny ALWAYS kills you, especially if you're the Yanks. They'd have been better off facing Pedroia with the bases juiced.

seriously, i don't see how u let their best hitter beat you in that situation... 1st bad decision by Girardi this season... he left it up to Moose to decide rather than taking charge & doing what a MGR is supposed to do... i hope this isn't the start of a trend for Joe G... even if Moose woulda gotten Manny out in that situation it still woulda been a bad choice to pitch to him.

btw, i better not hear any Red Sux players complaining about Joba's emotional displays after a big K... Papelbon's been doing that his entire career... & next time a Yankee hits a HR i wanna see them stand at the plate & admire that sh!t w/a flip of the bat like Manny... freakin' guy annoys the crap outta me w/his showboating & he gets pissed off everytime anyone comes up & in on him

manny has gotta be the most classless player of the last decade. he literally admires every homer he hits and as TMS said, acts as if he is all class when people go inside on him. someone needs to drill that coward in the back with a fastball, enough is enough.

papelbon is an absolute stud, and anyone who wants to move joba to starter need only look at papelbon. i'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather know i have someone with filthy stuff in my bullpen every day then bring in an ace once a week. it is SO Much more valuable

21 outs vs. 9-12 outs is what the argument is over a 5 day period essentially....but that
is a long philosophical argument that has been done over and over. Joba will be a starter and will dominate there and win us short series like you've seen Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling do over this past decade.

The Yanks need to find their bats....its getting a little pathetic at this point. Its not just the hits, as guys aren't getting on base and keeping the line moving as they usually do. I love the ARod, but man, that was a bit of a feeble at bat by him in a big spot last night.

Joe Girardi will make more mistakes over the course of the year- Torre was making more than one mistake a game at times the last few years and all managers will make the wrong decision at some point. With a guy like Mussina whom he's very much a contemporary of (are they not roughly the same age), he obviously wanted to be a little more delicate with him. As he has more time with this team he will know how to push the right buttons.

Papelbon was pretty filthy, i can't get on ARod too much for striking out in that situation... he's obviously struggled in clutch situations in big games tho, a problem that seems like won't be going away anytime soon w/him.

not sure u can pencil Joba in as a dominant starter just yet til we see him do so over a longer stretch than just 1-2 inning stints... when he's extended over starter's innings his velocity seems to drop down to 96mph as opposed to the 98mph he usually throws when he comes in for relief (at least that's what i've seen in the video clips in the minors)... he's got terrific stuff no question but just cuz he's dominating guys in relief doesn't mean he's gonna do the same as a starter.

TMS i think that misses the point though i agree w/ what your saying, joba should stay in the pen b/c riviera was the main reason for the 96-00 yankees. vesai, you said it yourself, like "randy johnson and curt schilling" or other good STAFFS one dominant ace doesn't win in the playoffs you need good pitching 1 through at least 3, the yankees have enough good young arms in the minors to be patient with 1 more developing (presuming hughes and kennedy both contribute this year).

TMS- Joba spent his college/minor league career being dominant over starting innings, so its not smoke and mirrors to believe he'd be a dominant starter. It'd be insane not to never give him the opportunity to do so just because he's been so good as a reliever. Guys generally will be given a million chances as a starter before they will be converted b/c orgs recognize the value there. The Yanks have a ton of power arms coming up that are more geared to the bullpen that didn't have the success Joba did in the minors as a starter. He's a 4 pitch pitcher that's currently only throwing two...

One question: Is pitching every 5 games as a starter really more stressing to one's arm than pitching 1 to 2 innings for about 80 games over the course of a season? I'm not sure what the answer is but since everyone seems to assume the answer is yes, I'll give a few possible counter arguments.

-There's less time to recover between appearances for relievers.

-There's far more warm up throwing (which must be at least a little stressing) for relievers. They warm up for the 80 games in which they appear plus probably about 25 in which they end up not coming in.

-I don't have any statistics on this issue but from my own observations I think that relievers tend to have shorter careers than starters.

i've been having the same argument over on the other forums, & let me just sum it all up by saying until we do find ourselves a guy who can step in & do the job like Joba's been doing as a setup guy, i think we need to keep him in there for the time being til at least he gets his innings count up, & possibly longer depending on the state of our starting rotation later on in the season.

Farnsworth & Hawkins are crap & should never ever be trusted to pitch in a big spot in the regular season much less during a postseason game IMO... Ohlendorff's been spotty at times, Bruney's been good this year but hasn't been consistent since he's been here... we can't leave the setup duties to guys like Edwar or Veras either, those are guys u want in middle relief.

What happened to the small ball, manufacturing runs and fundamental baseball that Girardi was going to bring to the team?

1st and 2nd with nobody out, down 2 runs in the 8th inning. The Yankees pull Molina, which will force Posada into duty when they wanted to rest his arm, and they lose the DH for the rest of the game. So does Girardi have Damon bunt and set the table for the big bats or does he do what Torre did constantly the last few years and wait for the big hit? He pulls a Torre and lets Damon swing away...into a ****ing double play. Not even a hit and run, just sit back and let them swing away and hope for a big hit.

Girardi has been awful this series. I was fine with replacing Torre because I was getting tired of this crap. Actually, Torre would have intentionally walked Manny. I'm really unimpressed by Girardi so far. He better pick it the **** up.

Oh joy, now Farnsworth-less is in to throw gas on the fire. Game over.

couldn't have said it better isles... & just to add to your rant, why the hell was Johnny Damon starting in CF today over Melky when Damon's been struggling all year & Melky's had better at bats than him all year, not to mention Damon is a clearly inferior defensive player to boot? so far Girardi hasn't impressed me much at all w/his managerial decisions & neither has Dave Eiland judging from the performances of our 2 rook starting pitchers... so far both his young protegees Hughes & Kennedy have looked like crap this year... i'm not nearly as concerned about the bats coming around as i am seeing these kids struggle the way they have up to this point... i'm really hoping they both have good outings their next times out cuz so far they've been nothing to write home about.

This is basically the same team as last year. We'll get to see if Girardi gets a better or a worse result than Torre got. I think by the end of this season we'll be begging Torre to quit his job and return to the Yankees.

Torre can stay in LA... his time in NY ran its course & it was time for a change... the problem is so far Joe G doesn't seem like much of a change.

good to see they dug it up... i can't fathom watching Yankee games at the new stadium knowing Papi's jersey is buried underneath it someplace.

the bats broke out bigtime tonight... we needed every bit of it too... the bullpen that's been so great really disappointed tonight... good to see 3 guys who've been struggling come through big tonight in Damon, ARod & Cano... that pinch hit HR will hopefully relieve some of his pressing & he can be the great hitter we all know he is... good to see Jeter come back & get a couple hits too... he moved well on defense too & almost made a great play up the middle on Upton's hard grounder... any other runner & that play woulda been a Webgem for sure.
