This draft sucked. Worse than last year, if possible.

Guess I got to go with the "hope I'm wrong" feeling again. Damn, when are we ever going to be legitimately excited around here?

This draft sucked because it was supposed to suck. If you weren't paying attention, this was one of the weakest draft classes in recent memory.

can we wait at least a year or two before making assumptions about a draft class that hasn't even had a chance to prove themselves on the NBA court yet?

From my point of view, it was. We will have to wait and see obviously. I hope I'm wrong though because I want Hill to turn out to be more than just solid.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

i'm not trying to bash your opinion but really we have nothing to base that whole "this draft class is weak" stuff until we see how these guys perform on the court... every year there are surprise players taken in the draft that no one really hyped that end up being the real deal that strengthens the overall pool of talent taken that year, & i see no reason to think this draft will be any different.

I like the Jordan Hill selection after Curry was gone. And I'm warming up to this Toney Douglas pick. Good offensive player that plays real good defense. We got 2 very good replacements for Lee and Nate - now we just need to fetch some good assets with S&Ts for both, hopefully one of those being a 2010 1st rounder. The plan appeared to be (1) Curry and a Nate replacement OR (2) Lee & Nate replacements. I think that was a sound plan. Walsh covered himself nicely here. Now there's no need to overpay Lee and Nate - Walsh has the upper hand now with those two. And bringing in Darko for Q was a very good trade. We traded away a broken down SG/SF at the end of his career for a big center that's still only 24 yrs. old. We try Darko out for a year now and see if he can turn it around. If not, he comes right off the cap. No harm, no foul... This was a PG heavy draft and I wanted a lead guard - Curry first and foremost, but once the other top PG prospects got selected one by one (Evans, Rubio, Flynn), I think it was sound judgement to avoid a "sloppy seconds" move for a remaining PG at 8 with a guy like Jrue Holiday. Once the dust settled from GS taking Curry and the realization hit home that he was gone (which for me wasn't that long ago), it hit me that Walsh really had a very sound plan B in place here. I still think we're gonna need to come up with a quality lead guard at some point though. If we can at least get a quality young PG AND a decent 2010 1st rounder in Lee & Nate S&Ts we're on our way..

i'm curious tho, is this guy Douglas really our PG of the future? if not, what's the point in buying that pick & giving out a guaranteed 1st rounder contract to him when we could have just signed a LLE type FA to be Duhon's backup next season?

maybe Donnie's reasoning was he thought at least 1 of Holiday, Lawson, Teague, Maynor Collison or Beaubois would fall to #29? or maybe he was high on this kid, who knows? from his clips he looks to be a pretty good shooter off the dribble & can create for himself, but doesn't really show much orchestrating ability, so not sure if he's the longterm answer as our starting PG... is he really an upgrade over Nate Robinson? i wonder... at least he's being talked about as a good defender... still, this guy's gonna be 24 years old next season, how much upside does he really have?

i personally still think we're gonna make a play for Rubio or Curry in the coming weeks.

sloppy seconds is Ty Lawson

If you draft a guy like Jrue or Derozan or Jennings its because of what they project out to be by the time they are Curry's age.

You draft Jordan Hill at 8 its because you're scared of failure when you should really be scared of another back to back stanza where 2 guys combine for 110 points.

NY always makes teh scared pick with the exception of Nate and Lee. But apparently they won't be Knicks for too much longer anyway

Walsh didn't pay $3 million for the extra pick without big plans for Douglas. Walsh said he obtained the pick specifically for Douglas, and if he was off the board, he would have traded it for a first-round pick in 2010, and already had a buyer.

I'm talking about our selections sucked...On paper this was a weak draft. I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt, tho.

How come this went unmentioned during the Tyreke Evans lovefest? I know he was young and sometimes that's when you do dumb things but the company you keep says a lot about who you are... anyway, I read this and am really glad he's not on the team
Evans was at scene of fatal shooting
The high school basketball star has not been charged in the Nov. 25 incident, but he was there.

By Kathleen Brady Shea

Inquirer Staff Writer
High school basketball superstar Tyreke Evans drove a sport utility vehicle away from the scene after a passenger allegedly shot and killed a man last month, according to a Chester Township police affidavit that was released last week.

Evans, who lives in the city of Chester, has not been charged with any crime.

A senior at American Christian Academy in Aston, Delaware County, Evans is considered one of the nation's top high school players and is being heavily recruited by top-tier colleges, including Villanova, Memphis and Louisville.

He is scheduled to play in the Pete Nelson Classic tonight and tomorrow at Widener University. An event spokesman said "everything is on as usual." American Christian will take on Atlantic City tonight at 6:30.

Neither Evans nor his legal guardian and uncle, Reggie Evans, was available for comment. His friends and family have said little about the incident.

"I have no comment regarding Tyreke Evans," said Tony Bergeron, American Christian's boys' basketball coach. "The American Christian family and the Evans family have agreed not to talk."

A 16-year-old cousin of Evans' was charged with the killing Friday by Chester Township police.

The criminal complaint includes information from an interview with Evans, a 6-foot-6 point guard listed by most talent scouting services as one of the top five players in the Class of 2008.

The victim, Marcus Reason, 19, was shot once in the chest.

According to the affidavit, which was released Friday, Evans, 18, told police he drove to his aunt's house on Rainer Road in Chester after a Nov. 25 basketball game to watch the end of the Denver Broncos-Chicago Bears game on television.

Evans told police that before the game ended, his mother told him by telephone that "the pies that she had just baked were ready."

He told police he went outside, pulled his gold Ford Expedition to the front of his aunt's house, and waited for three companions to join him, including his cousin, Jamar "Mar Mar" Evans.

After they entered the vehicle, the affidavit says, two of the other passengers shouted, "Go! He's about to shoot!" - referring to Reason, who had told a witness he had a problem with some people who were in that house.

Tyreke Evans told police he heard two gunshots as he drove away and saw his cousin "putting a brown-handled, silver handgun into the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt."He told police that he remained with his cousin for at least 20 minutes after the shooting and overheard a phone conversation regarding the whereabouts of the gun.

Jamar Evans turned himself in to police Friday. He is being held without bail after being charged with first-degree murder and related offenses.

Joseph J. Brielmann, a spokesman for the Delaware County District Attorney's Office, declined to comment on whether Tyreke Evans could be charged in the case.

"Mere presence at the scene of a crime is not evidence of guilt," said Arthur T. Donato Jr., a Delaware County attorney who is not involved in the case. "Assuming he knew nothing about what was going to happen, he wouldn't be guilty of anything."

Evans, who is friends with NBA stars LeBron James and Jason Kidd, has been called "the next great thing" by talent scouts. He has attended American Christian since the seventh grade. Evans entered the season having scored more than 2,400 points in his career.

American Christian hired Bergeron in July 2006 with hopes of elevating the small prep school to national prominence. A former Five-Star Basketball Camp instructor who transformed Wings Academy into a New York City powerhouse, Bergeron put together an ambitious schedule for the 2007-08 season, including games against national high school powers St. Benedict's Prep of Elizabeth, N.J., and St. Anthony of Jersey City.

How does being a blood relative of someone who commits a crime be a reflection of your morals?

While I admit that it appears he knew nothing of the incident, he also technically was a get away driver at a murder scene.

I cannot wait to see how you try to twist my words around this time!!

because Donnie obviously felt the asking price was too much... you have no idea what was being discussed so stop trying to reason how Donnie missed the boat by not doing so.

Because we had nothing to offer that teams wanted? Yeah, that sounds about right.

Glad we didn't take Curry now. I just can't see him being a star in the league. I think Hill has more potential.

IMO potential wise 1 doesn't really stand out to me over the other, so i would have been happy with either pick... but Hill just seems to bring that nastiness that we've been lacking for so long, i think he'll be a welcome addition to this roster when it's all said & done.

I also think he's more valuable because of his position. You've been posting about us needing a shot blocker for years now. And while he's no Thabeet in the paint, he seems like he can and will make his presence felt in the paint. He rebounds, blocks shots, bangs in the paint and has a little turn around jumper. These are the main attributes I or anyone can want in a power forward.

As for Curry, there was a time when I wanted him. But once we drafted Hill, I didn't care much for Curry. Yes, he can shoot lights out, but so can a lot of other guys in this league.

What Hill brings to the table compared to Curry is more of what the Knicks need right now imo.

i dont think he is the pg of the future and i sure hope the FO dosnt think so either. the kid did play well against some good teams and played real well against unc in the acc tourney this year. hope he can take the "big game" type of play to the nba level when/if he gets any minutes.

Getting the 29th pick and Toney Douglas was an excellent move. It cost us $3 million, but that is upfront money and doesn't count towards the cap. His guaranteed salary is quite minimal - I think this was this past years salaries? even though it says 2009-2010.

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9301

2009 - 2010 $830,200
2010 - 2011 $892,500
2011 - 2012 (team option) $954,700

We have him for 2 years, with a 3rd year option - every year below $1 million. We can't sign a veteran that is any good for this amount. This is very easy on our salary cap.

The site might have the salaries a little low, but you get the idea.

Also, we have plenty of roster room. For this year we have 9 guaranteed contracts before the draft and 2 RFA. Next year 2010, we only have 4 guaranteed contracts not counting this years draft nor the RFA. We do need to fill some of these spots, espec for 2010, with good supporting players.
