I think the team needed a complete overhaul. If we were going to be buyers, though, we should have at least bought something worthwhile.
Agreed. Only thing I can think of is Cash looked into some bigger moves I'm sure. Price was prob. way too high though -- teams prob. wanted Betances, D-Rob, O'Brien, Luis Servino, Gary Sanchez, etc...Then once teams wouldn't drop their asking price, he then went to his plan B, plan C ideas. To me though, Pete O'Brien was a lot to give up for a plan C, no?
Don't know what they think they got in Prado but to be fair, I might rate that trade a little higher than a D-, we'll see. Wasn't overly familiar with him but just looking over his stats and some video -- he's not a power hitter--I hope they don't think they got some legit power hitter--but he's got a live-looking bat. Should be able to compile some extra base hits, shoot balls in the gaps for doubles, etc.. Looks like he's got some nice gap power.. Close to a .300 hitter for his career. He's right-handed though, so in Yankee Stadium especially, probability is low he starts hitting HRs for us, and to me that's what we really needed: a legit power hitter. Looks like Prado's fairly versatile too--I think he's really a 3rd baseman but I believe I read the plan is to start using him in RF. I guess he's got some experience in the OF -- I hope he can handle that role and thrive here. If all goes well, this guy could have an impact...Having said that, I would much rather have seen Peter O'Brien called up weeks ago to see if he could've provided some real pop for the lineup. Sometimes the answers are right in front of you. Grass ain't always greener, you know the deal Bonn...What were they afraid of? Calling up O'Brien, rushing him up from Trenton, and he failed? So what if he did? Big deal -- nobody would've expected a thing outta the kid. Turns out we were only able to get Martin Prado for him so his value, despite the 33 HRs in the minors this yr up to this point, was still relatively low. But what if we brought him up and he became an overnight sensation? It's happened before...Say we brought the kid up, he started hitting bombs, galvanized the team & city, the crowd fell in love with him, we finally found some legit power (and on the cheap too, always a good thing), etc...He either could've helped us AND/OR he could've increased his value to the point where we could've gotten something better than Prado for him. Prado doesn't look like a bad addition himself; giving up on O'Brien so early is what really makes the move feel like a D- to me. I would've liked to have seen what this kid could've done at the major league level FOR US. My guess is he would've held his own and hit for some power. All of Cash's other moves were some nice minor tweaks I supported (I can even live with what they gave up for Headley---Solarte had really fizzled out and it looked like things were starting to catch up to Rafael De Paula, who wasn't nearly as dominant this year as he was when he first debuted for the Yanks), but this move for Prado I feel like he may have given up too much..
