Prime T-Mac and prime Vince are two players, in retrospect, I wished I'd watched more at the time- don't think I watched many non-games in that era, and I didn't watch all the Knicks games due to circumstances (moving around a lot) |

Seemed like a nice guy from the interviews I've watched, but he was clearly overmatched. That said, I think there's a good chance Ron Artest ends up dead if he gets drafted by the Knicks. Ridiculous temper matched with emotional immaturity and easy access to his old stomping grounds would've been a disaster. I think the Knicks passing on Artest at that time in his life was the best thing that could've happened for the sake of all involved parties. Always... always remember: Less is less. More is more. More is better and twice as much is good too. Not enough is bad, and too much is never enough except when it's just about right.

By 1999 Dave Checketts was president and CEO of MSG and its properties. Ed Tapscott had just replaced Grunfeld as GM that spring as Dolan had instructed Checketts to fire Grunfeld early April. This was the strike short year we made finals. The knicks surged the last few weeks of that season to squeek into the playoffs as the 8 seed and Dolan might have been empowered by this early in his ownership tenure which Chris Herring thinks might have done more damage in the ensuing years. Checketts did not want to fire Grunfeld and seeing the writing on the wall knew he would eventually leave 2 years later. Artest was no doubt a talented young man. That was a tough draft and after that pick there was not much else. I wonder if Ron was living and playing in NYC how his career and issues could have played out? Perhaps magnified and accelerated his issues cannot ruled out. Thus, one cannot simply imply all things would have been equal. They never are. I agree, best in game dunker! Truely gifted athlete and his longevity was impressive!. 1998 draft? Taken fifth after Olowakandi, Mike Bibby, Raef Lafranz, then Antoine Jamison. Jamison was traded for Carter. Both UNC teamates drafted 4-5 went on to have great NBA careers. As did Bibby. Raef and Kandiman lesser. This was the era of big men. Raef could shoot and these stretch guys were becoming more in vogue. Ewing was on his last gasp but his range paid him big dividends. Weis? Im inclined to consider at 7’2 his potential might have included that. He was a 19 year old euro. Obviously I won’t defend that pick. It was a disaster and Tapscott was soon scarred by it. Weis played 11 years in europe and statistically he was not great, but he had 4 years where he was top 5 in rebounds and lead his league in blocks. Obviously was not NBA talent. I read he attempted suicide in 2008 depressed with Autistic son, marriage issues and a disappointing career. He played a few more years after. He was a 1st rounder in most mock drafts but not as high as picked. Read he and his wife reconciled and he stopped drinking. Maybe as I get older I empathize with the humanity of the characters of our sports history. In “Blood in the garden” I have referenced the last few weeks there are pages about Charles Smith, the man, his charactor, and the effect of that play. Far worse Might say the same for Bill Buckner and the 1986 world series. Sure we hooted and tormented the “loser redsox” in the aftermath but the humanity was real. Boston fans were not kind to him either. The man had a great career and made a ton of money and one play on the biggest of stages haunted him. Few of us ever get to even step on that stage and rise to the top of our chosen professions. Yet millions get to call him a loser for one play. |

What stunk was when the Craptors traded Vince to the Nets to spite him (because he wanted the Knicks)- they got such a shockingly bad return, it was an absolute joke! We offered a better package, but they decided to prioritize spiting him (and us) for dogging it the whole season. I mean, look at it: Nets trade: Alonzo Mourning, Aaron Williams, Eric Williams, two first-round draft picks (2005, 2006). They even had to buy Zo out |
